Hi, I'm Silvia, Welcome to my Channel!
Have you ever wondered if one Mass Market brand is better than another? There are so many things that play an important role when choosing a deck for our collection and personal practice that sometimes we might find ourselves drawn towards a brand of tarot decks simply because of its card stock.
But brands evolve their products over time and this has been true for tarot decks as well.
Today I'm showing you how two major players in the Mss Market production of tarot have changed their products over the last 40 years.
Who will win? US Games or Lo Scarabeo?

I actually really appreciate that Lo Scarabeo continues to include multiple languages in their guidebooks. I think it’s much more accessible to the rest of the world, and inclusive on their part. Of course US Games would only have English as that is the native language, but for an Italian publisher to be inclusive to much of Europe is absolutely lovely. To avoid the clutter in their newer decks I think they have addressed this well by using symbols instead of text, like in the Nicoletta Ceccoli tarot, Murder of Crows, John Bauer etc. There is no need to exclude non-English speakers, just my opinion. Have you compared the Lo Scarabeo card stock to the reproductions in the Total Tarot Magazine? I’m curious if they are comparable or if they vary quite differently. [edit: thank you for taking us through this historical view of publishing, it was very interesting to see how they change and adapt their product over time!]

I know what you mean, giving the possibility to non-English speakers to approach their decks is very important! It’s just a pity that because of this they have to sacrifice the descriptions of the cards and limit them to very general meanings, this way defeating the purpose of multiple languages. Maybe they should include a pdf file with expanded meanings in multiple languages! I’m very confused about the Total Tarot Magazine quality. I was super happy about the quality of the first couple of decks but lately it’s been declining to the point that the latest decks feel very cheap. I don’t know what happened but I heard a lot of people complaining about that!

@@fairlighttarot that’s a shame to hear about the declining quality in the total tarot decks! I only purchased the editions with Pre-Raphael and John Bauer. I found them to be equal to each other, but don’t have any other tuck box Lo Scarabeo to compare to. I did find them similar to the card stock used in the Tarot Del Fuego by Fournier. I hope to purchase the editions with the White Cats and Egyptian tarot decks, I’m not interested in the other editions.

This was so refreshing to hear genuine comparisons of the positive and negative factors for each deck presented. I truly appreciate that. Thank you.

I've always preferred US Games not just over Lo Scarabeo but overall. I think that their products are just superior in any matter. But it was very interesting to see the differences between the decks over the years thank you!

I think at the end of the day it depends a lot on what you're used to, right? Growing up in Italy meant that I had easy access to Lo Scarabeo, but I really like what US Games has done in the last two decades :)

I chose Lo Scarabeo over US Games - except for a couple of decks. The simple fact that 80% of my collection is LS sais enough 😊

Wow! That’s a definite winner 🤩 I should get to actually catalogue my decks one day, at this stage I don’t know if I have more LS or US Games…. 😂

That was very interesting Silvia, i love them both sadly for my wallet 😂 but not loving the 32card trend I prefer 44 minimum especially for those prices . Thank you for sharing ❤

Me too! Spending the same amount on a 32 cards deck as a 44 or more just seems unfair! And yet that Journey of a Lonely Soul is outstanding 🖤🖤🖤 Thank you so much for watching 🙏

Ha! Clash of the titans! I love it. I would say (without having actually counted) that about 60% of my collection comes from these two publishers. Titans indeed! I hate that book depository is closing. I hope that someone will pick up their distribution for everyone. For me, I could never compare these two because I really feel that they really do tend to produce very different types of decks, at least in my collection. I love them both and living in the US makes the cost about the same (although Lewellyn distributes Lo Scarebeo on sale all the time which makes their decks less expensive) I do agree with you that it was much easier for me to find Lo Scarebeo when I was abroad which is how I ended up with so many. Plus Lo S tuck box decks have always just fit in my hands very well. I agree with you about their guidebooks tho. Some of them are so good and I’m like wow how did they fit all of that in 15 pages and some of them are terrible. And you never know what you are going to get 😆. But US games has been on fire lately. Bringing some very artistic and even indie art decks to the mass market with such attention and care. I’ll never choooooosse 🤣🤣🤣

I know! I can't decide either lol! Halfway through filming the video I realised that I couldn't really pick a winner because there's also a lot of sentimental value I now assign to some decks. But you're right, US Games have really done a wonderful job lately with indie creators, I hope they keep it up :)

That Tarot of Tales looks amazing! I love fairytales but there don't seem to be that many decks based on the traditional ones. I also love US Games more, they seem to be dedicating their entire product portfolio to the occult which is rare. Very interesting video and very interesting to hear your opinion
@fairlighttarot
@fairlighttarot Год назад
That decks is really beautiful! I think Lisa Hunt's Fairytale tarot is really gorgeous too and based on traditional tales but it's OOP. Although I heard it's going to be re-printed by US Games later in the year!

Just wanted to let you know that I successfully ordered decks from U.S.Games with my U.S. forwarding address at vPost in Oregon. No problems at all.
@fairlighttarot
@fairlighttarot Год назад
I can do that too now, but only when I use a VPN. If I don’t, the website shows me the decks but there’s a red banner on top saying that they don’t ship outside the US and when I try to order something it doesn’t even let me create an account. I’ve emailed them twice but they want me to proceed with the transaction (including CC details) via email and I said no to that 🤷‍♀️

Re: larger size of Medieval Scapini: You can trim it down to borderless on the back and keep titles and numbering on front. Prefer the older flap styles that allows you to fold tuck boxes flat for storage, as opposed to newer LS tuck boxes that glue the bottom flap (looking at you, LS 👀) Llewellyn, IMO, doesn't stand up to LS or USG card stock, but I think they're changing, IDK. Glad LS evolved past multiple titles, and Symbolic Soul is amazing - great card stock and guidebook.
@fairlighttarot
@fairlighttarot Год назад
That’s true, the old flap style was easy to fold the box flat and now we can’t do it anymore. I guess not all changed are for the best 🤷‍♀️ I agree re Llewellyn, they haven’t been at the same level when it comes to cardstock but there’s hope 😁 Thank you for watching 🙏

This was interesting. I enjoyed watching the video. I agree with most of your points and I would be curious about your thoughts on Llewellyn. My current favorite publisher is Rockpool by far and I stopped looking at Schiffer at all. I enjoy some Tarot by Lo Scarabeo but don’t bother with their Oracle decks. I’m satisfied with US Games for the most part but I don’t like the different sizes. There are cases where I like the deck enough to tolerate the downsides (the super glossy Mystical Moments) but generally I want things to be predictable, that’s a clear positive point for Llewellyn, you know exactly what to expect and everything matches on the shelf. I hate 200 different sized boxes and the untidy look they create. I love my Llewellyn and Rockpool collections just for that, Rockpool even more because they don’t waste my shelfspace with unnecessary big packaging.
@fairlighttarot
@fairlighttarot Год назад
I completely agree on Rockpool, their boxes are the perfect size for deck and guidebook! Living in Australia means that I have easy access to them for affordable prices too 👍 With Llewellyn tbh it’s a bit of a hit and miss for me. They seem to only publish a very specific kind of art style but they’re not experimenting nor supportive of new emerging artists. US Games is definitely a pioneer for that. Thank you for watching 🙏
@maharetlanoire4419
@maharetlanoire4419 Год назад
@@fairlighttarot That’s right, Llewellyn has a kind of limited scope on things. I was strictly talking packaging and the cards here. I like my collection to have a very wide variety of artwork and content, so my percentage of Llewellyn decks is way into the single digits.

sorry for the bad english! I will always prefer Lo Scarabeo the values that their decks arrive in Brazil are very affordable, even more than the national decks and with infinitely superior quality. The distribution of the U.S. Games in Brazil don't exist so I only have two decks of them.
