Just a small clarification... The two 80s helmets actually have two different camo patterns (thats; why they are so different). The first one is ERDL and the second one is the classic Woodland pattern.
@krusekids
@krusekids 2 года назад
Yeah that's what I was thinking. They aren't two M81 Woodland covers from different manufacturers, but rather an ERDL cover and a Woodland cover. They look almost identical but are ultimately quite different.

In the Marine Corps, since we couldn't spell to gooder... the one we referred to as "Ripstop" (which did not do what the name implies) and the other, "Elvis". Why "Elvis"? Because that thick, heat-casualty producing material had the HUGE pointed collars like an Elvis costume from the seventies.

I think the helmet looked more German than Nazi. They had a similar design in world war 1 that replaced the helmets with the spike on the top. But that design of helmet was used by German soldiers way before Hitler took power and used a bit after the war in Europe was over.
@yowtfputthemaskbackon9202
@yowtfputthemaskbackon9202 Год назад
its actually a very broad family of helmets. designed by a guy called "schwerd" with last name (roughly translates to: sword) up to the cold war these helmets were used by the germans, austrians, bulgarians, spanish, irish, turkish, polish, czechs, norwegians, danish, dutch, the soviets (only a handfull of those were ever made but they were used) , swedish, finnish, slovakians (using a bulgarian helmet), hungarians, and probably a few more. the helmet types differentiated between civilian and military styles, the civilian ones often easy to identfy by their distinct honeycomb style airvents at the sides, where the military ones usually have a single (one on each side) often reinforced venthole. the style of helmets very much excelled at what it wanted to do. protect against shrapnel and falling objects from all sides while making a small profile and not inhibiting breathing, hearing, and vision. which is why some of the civilian variants see service even to today, with some individual helmets having had 80 or more years of service to their name. the PAGST doesnt realy particularily resemble any one of them, but i think it could be argued that it certainly follows a very similar design philosophy. ultimately, if something works, why change it. and the schwerd pattern works exceptionally for beeing a over 100 year old design.

You are missing LWH (light weight helmet) used by the Marines :) The ACU camo is actually called UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern), few people know that because it came out together with the ACU. On standard issued Army gear/uniforms, MultiCam is also called OCP (Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern or OEF-CP after the new OCP came out), the Army adopted OEF-CP to be used in Afghanistan because UCP was doing terribly in the environment there but they did not want to replace it for good at the time.

Very nice. I wore the steel pot in 87/88 with the BDU cover. Got my first Kevlar in Airborne School in 88. From then on it was the PASGT Kevlar until 2005 when I got my Advanced Combat Helmet. The ACH was the most comfortable helmet I ever wore. Fun fact; I had a Platoon Sergeant in 98 whose wife worked at clothing sales. She got him a poly styrene display kevlar helmet that weighed close to nothing and looked like the real thing. He would wear it when we did change of command ceremonies as it was light and comfy!

Pros: covers the more area than most (adopted) WWII helmets. Cons: Different Sizes, which makes production and supply more complicated and expensive, and means there is less room for the shell to dent before it hits your head. Impedes Vision and hearing more. I haven't tried one on, but I imagine it would bump into your neck when prone, pushing the front forwards over you eyes, which was an issue with the M1, which wasn't as long in the back.

I bet they sucked when you jumped with a Rag Top on. The Light Infantry Divisions like 7th ID and 25th ID would wear them till the end of the 1990s. I don't know where it became a craze? I think it was a Ranger School influence. I did notice that when I was in Germany, the German Army and other NATO armies would have Rag Tops. There is one in Woodland (BDU) camouflage and the left one is ERDL (Late Vietnam) camouflage 2/ PASGT stands for Personnel armor system for ground troops not "Protective armor support troop" 3/ MICH and ACH helmets are not the same. ACH is MICHes second generation version 4/ ACU stands for Army combat uniform" not Army camouflage uniform" 5/ PASGT is actually much more confortable helmet than MICH due to its leather strap, that tends to stick to your head when you are sweaty (Prevents helmet from wobble on the head while running) and due to its net strap that circulate fresh air much better, than MICH pillow style webbing 6/Marines wearing MARPAT camouflage on theirs MCUU uniforms. The green one is woodland version and the tan one is desert version, not a night and day like you said....god.

Im sure someone mentioned this but the modern Marine pattern is called MARPAT and was introduced during the early 2000s. Its digital because at a dustance your eyes cant make out the sharp edges and blur them together, effectivley using the enemies natural eye functions against them. The army ACU (Army Combat Uniform, not Army Camo Uniform) was made since the marines owned the rights to MARPAT and wanted to keep it as a unique marine uniform. The army wanted to "modernize" and created the grey digital pattern. Later, after lots of negative feedback, Multicam was chosen to replace ACU as it functioned much better in various enviornments.

In 1969 and 1970 I was THE (yep, there was only one.) quality control person for the M-1, 6521 Dana Corporation manufactured army helmet. The Federal government thought the less people involved in this TOP SECRET project the better. My first day on the job I had to sign a Federal government non-disclosure form. That form has never been rescinded so I really don’t know if I’m still bound by any of it today. I can say with confidence that there are secrets still today about the helmet that the general public knows nothing about. When I worked on the helmet project at Dana I always carried a set of blue prints for the helmet. Each page was rubber stamped TOP SECRET. I also was one of the few people who knew the formula for the alloy. There are secrets about those helmets (especially about the alloy) that if I were to tell you, you would say that I must be making it up. So now 50 years later I’m still hesitant to disclose everything I know about the M-1 Vietnam era helmet.

Cool video! I had to sew slightly larger I.R. patches on my Marine uniform back in 2003. They went on a couple inches down on the sleeves and same spot on the helmet. We were also required to add on an iron on EGA to the front of our helmet cover.

The "desert marine" cover appears to actually be a navy type 2 uniform which uses vertical digital pattern compared to the marines horizontal: uses slightly different colors and the navy has a type 3 woodland digital as well. Both of the patterns are worn exclusively by navy special warfare.

Original MARPAT fabric has a small EGA printed into the pattern. If you look closely, these don't have that. Also, the (reversible) LWH cover I have has a large EGA on the front, but not sure if the earlier non-reversibles had this as well.

Good video overall. The Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) is a part of the Modular Integrated Communications Helmet (MICH) family, which also includes the Lightweight Helmet (LHW) as worn by Marines after the PASGTs. The new pattern that the Army is buying and wearing is called Scorpion W2, a.k.a. the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP). This is happening because the Army offered to buy the rights to Multicam for a ridiculous under bid that the owning company rightly refused. A common misconception is referring to the grey digital pattern as the "Army Combet Uniform " (ACU). In reality, the ACU is a specification for Army uniforms. Even their new uniforms in the Scorpion W2 pattern are made to ACU spec. The digital grey pattern itself is called the Universal camouflage Pattern (UCP). When the Army was in trials fora new pattern, Multicam actually beat UCP, but the Army went grey because it was cheaper at the time. Also, those goggle straps on the last ACH are an accesory and can be added to helmets at least in the MICH family onward. Even the new Ops-Cores can accept them.

huh, they are phasing out ACU in favour of Multicam? really? thats plain stupid, just use MARPAT altogether, its proven that digital is the superior pattern that said, Canada does have the best woodland digital pattern (CADPAT ftw) so i can understand why some people would say their camo sucks by the way those people saying white snow camo is not a thing must be complete imbeciles

I thought the grey camo was for the navy, simply because the Australian navy use grey camo. As for the digital camo print, about 10 or maybe less years ago, I started noticing the Australian army were using that digital print, and just scratched my head in puzzlement. I'll just accept that they decide it was a good idea after the USMC started using it
