I found your channel this year and have been really enjoying your videos. I have been watching your unit study videos as well. I really appreciate how you show us each book. I was wondering do you finish all these books with your kids? I have been trying to do what you do but it’s hard to finish these wonderful books together. However, I would hate to make them read all the books or majority of the books on their own. I don’t read as fast as my older daughter 😆 so I am not sure how accurate her narration is. She is really detail oriented. Please share your thoughts. Thank you :)

I do love how this set is broken down into smaller set. It makes it less overwhelming for the kids and easier to learn.

Yes! Plus the chapters are short and have a lot of pictures, so it's extra easy to get through.

You're SO right about having them come up with the questions! I actually had an instructor in college do just that... we would review the material with him before the exams and essentially he'd ask us tell him what we learned (he'd write it on the board) and then would expand on it...the following week THOSE topics would be our exam. It was probably the most comprehensive real learning I'd ever done in college!

You know, from limited time came a solution that was even better than me coming up with questions. Our teacher at our charter school and I were both impressed with the critical thinking questions he came up with and doubly impressed with his answers. Our teacher said this was a great skill for him because he has to synthesize the information and know it well enough to come up with question. However, over time, the assignments lost their novelty, and his answers got shorter and shorter. Granted, I also still have him hand write his assignments. I'm thrilled to hear that you did something similar in college and relieved to hear it was one of your better learning experiences. Thank you for sharing that story :) -Hana

I just ordered these for my sixth grader. We’ll read them aloud and discuss what we read. I was looking at getting the student workbooks or something from TPT to accompany each book. Glad I saw your video because it gave me more ideas on what else we can do. Thanks!

We love those books! I started Elizabeth with them this year to supplement our regular history and she really enjoys reading them. She'll use them again next year. That news/Revoluationary War book looks great!

I'm so glad Elizabeth is enjoying the History of US books. I was so excited about the two supplement books I got with real history, but found them so much more difficult to use than I expected. I'm a little disappointed. -Hana

Thank you, Hana! This video was really inspiring for me because my son will be in 8th grade next year and we homeschool through our local charter school's home study program and my son will have to take U.S. History next year. I am already trying to figure out what our curriculum will be and so thanks for sharing! Has your son started this curriculum yet? Does he like it? Do you like it? How many weeks do you think it will take to go through all ten books? Thanks! :)~Mozey

So far, my 9th grader is enjoying these books and of all his subjects, I can say he enjoys history the most. I want to get through all these books by the end of the school year (for us it will be the end of June, though originally I had it set for the end of May). He is on book 6 (almost book 7) and I'm pretty sure he's behind by at least 2 weeks. So, that being said, I'm pretty sure he could make it to the end of book 10 by the end of the year if he had stayed on track with 2-3 chapters a day. The chapters are short and easy to read. There are workbooks that accompany this series, but I chose not to buy them. Granted, I could only see 1-2 pages of content. I kind of wish I bought at least one workbook to see if we would like it and then decide. Overall, he summarizes the chapter in written form and formulates two critical thinking questions based on the text. He also answers the questions. I don't do vocab or short answer or multiple choice questions. Just personal decision, but you might find value in doing that, too. -Hana

Could you let me know how the first volume (the prehistoric) is like? I love how the chapter that you flipped through had "Discovered" in quotes instead of the usual blather.

I actually didn't read it! My son read it as it wasn't a read aloud for us. But I'll browse through it. I read my son's narrations, and they seemed pretty good, interesting and objective. -Hana

Interesting the entire series in one year, and without the teaching guides, and student study guides.? I use A History of Us. The curriculum is very rich, and intense when used as designed.The teaching guides, and study guides are the heart of the curriculum. There are so may free resources on the curriculum available including videos per book. This curriculum is one I guide my children through just because it is so rich. Also curriculum is suitable for mid elementary aged students as well. I notice you said you did not read the books, I think you will have a broader understanding if you did, before presenting it to the children in my opinion.

I almost ordered the study guides, but the questions and content of the study guides didn't resonate with our style of teaching, though I think they are great companion books. And maybe in the future I'll reconsider. I would love to read these books along with both my students, but chose a variety of living books for my 5th grader. My 9th grader really enjoys these, and I look forward to using them again. I'm sure there's so much depth to these books and their companion study guides and taking more than a year would certainly do the program justice. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. -Hana

Not quite sure what you are trying to say. Do you have a better resource for history?

Why does High School history make no mention of World War II, the Nazis, the communists, the Korean and Vietnam war and the bombs dropped on Japan? That would have held my interest.
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 лет назад
If you were schooled in a traditional school, it's possible the teacher simply ran out of time to teach those topics as they are modern history and would be at the end of the textbook. Teachers often cannot complete the coursework within the year. Since you have an interest for it now, there are plenty of resources that you could explore on your own.

Assalamalaikumwrwb I highly appreciate how you struggle with your kids and share your knowledge with us as well JazakiLLAH khairun kaseera But I haven't seen any Islamic curriculum video which I was expecting, and about which there isn't much information out there

Wa'alykum Asalam Zafran, thank you! I post my Islamic inspired crafts and homeschooling videos on my other channel. I don't use a specific curriculum, rather I incorporate relevant topics throughout. My grammar program blends Islamic history with writing, grammar and spelling. I haven't talked about it yet on my other channel because I'm still editing it. You can get a look at it if you want; I'll send you a link. Moving forward, I'll be showing how I blend the stories of the previous prophets with learning the letters of the alphabet, but as my daughter will still be in KG next year, that won't be for another 1 1/2 years. The Islamic books by IQRA are really good supplements to a curriculum as young as the toddler years. -Hana
