Hey there fellow travelers. This video was made for first time travelers to The USA to help them better know what to expect from US chain hotels. It was a topic requested by a number of our viewers, so I hope it can help those visiting the US for the first time. Great travels to you all!

One thing European travelers should know about the US. Use the toilet before you leave your room. Public bathrooms have *_NO_* privacy!!! At best, you can expect a flimsy "cubicle" partition around the shitter so you can chat and exchange photos with the person sitting next to you. There are a few, a _very few._ places (notably Burger King and Dunkin Donuts) that have actual private rooms. In some newer shopping malls, you might find "handicapped" or "family" restrooms that have private rooms, but these are also rare. Bathtubs are also a joke in the US. An adult can't sit comfortably in an American tub. I don't know why they even bother...

+Judge, if you're black, then just don't go into a black neighborhood and you'll be very safe in America: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OqK5MGD6Vkg.html

+Judge Jude yes, absolutely. Basically, just be cautious around potentially aggressive cops (if you get pulled over, follow orders, keep hands on steering wheel, don't reach in pockets or walk away) and be careful about when and which parts of high-crime neighborhoods you go in (where muggings do happen and are sometimes fatal). The idea that you will get attacked because of your race/ethnicity is out of the question; a lot of these media-highlighted events are staged and are extremely rare in a country of 320 million.

One should consider that hotels and motels in the US will have an AC running. Which likely does make some noise. Like it was audible in the background oft the video. Thus if you ain't used to ACs running (being silent, turning on/making noise, being silent again spurning back on) you might like to bring some earplugs. You could turn the AC off, yet if you are there during "not winter" the room will heat up uncomfortably. Other than that, I just considered it a nice thing to actually leave some tip for the cleaning staff. Some hotels might even provide one with an envelope for those. It will make the staffers happy and maybe your room gets a better treatment.

Fantastic tips, Mark! For hotels, one travel hack I recommend is to avoid booking those non-refundable prepaid rates. It seems counter intuitive because you get a discount with those, but discount is usually not very big. Instead, I recommend booking a refundable room well in advance. If the price drops or another hotel nearby runs a sale at a great rate, you can always cancel for free and re-book.
@woltersworld
@woltersworld 6 лет назад
yeah and now some are pushing back their 24 hour free cancellation to 48 hours or even 72 hours. yikes

@ajl1239 6 лет назад
I totally disagree. You can book a pre-paid, non-refundable room in NYC at a clean, well-managed, centrally-located chain hotel and pay *a lot* less than you will if you book a refundable room at a much crummier property; if you can be certain about your dates, in the USA, Priceline/Hotwire pre-paid mystery deals are the best prices you can find

If you are traveling on Interstate roads, the rest stops frequently have free hotel coupon books. The coupons are typically good for one night walk-in stays. You can save 30 - 40% with some hotels which is better than the 10% AAA, AARP, etc. The hotels are usually at Interstate exits. We look for exits that have more than one hotel offering a coupon, they tend to be exits with more hotels, restaurants and gas stations. We like the more familiar chain hotels because they have more consistent quality.

The only way to be more Canadian than that is to be First Nations. :) Good point about the driving distances. My brother in law did an NS-AB road trip a couple of years ago with his family. Crazy distance, wouldn't be me.

Great video! Our experience with hotels here in the U.S. is that, if you have the opportunity to choose your room location, try to choose a room away from the elevators, ice and vending machines, and stairwells, because of the noise.

Honestly, when it comes to American hotels I find the mid-level ones to be a lot better than the fancy ones (unless they're really fancy). Most expensive hotels have rooms that are about the same as mid-level rooms, and their amenities are not all that spectacular in many cases.

One thing that was not mentioned is that all US hotels/motels have bathrooms in the room. When I traveled to Germany years ago, I learned that it's much less common especially in older guesthouses (I don't recall chain hotels in Germany away from the airport area), so a worthwhile point.

The only thing I'd add is to make sure you call ahead and ask the hotel if you need to be 21+ to book a room. Certain American hotels will not allow 18-20 year olds to reserve a room.
@alexandrap7253

Because some do not want to deal with liability. Hotels give underage people opportunity to rent a room to drink. Also, some hotels come with a mini bar which is a major no no in the U.S for people under 21.

Oh Mark, I love a hotel room with a bath, I don't have a bath in my house so it's a treat to have one with I'm away. I used to work as a hotel maid, and to be honest, even knowing how things are cleaned, it does not bother me to use anything in a hotel room- but if you are that way inclined, I would avoid cups and glasses as you don't know they have been washed separately or with the same cloths used in the bathroom!

Fantastic review mark.. Heres some more tips. make sure you get points for your stay sp that you can add them for skymiles.. In addition certain places have much higher taxes than other. for example. Buckhead in Atlanta has like a 3 or 4% extra charge instead of staying 5 miles up the road.. Connecticut and some east coast states have high room taxea also like 10-14% usually the Midwest and south are the cheepest. But middle cities get alot of drive through traffic so always call ahead. thanks

Here's a travel tip that we sometimes use. Some airport hotels offer two weeks of free parking with one night's stay. If we have a late arrival coming home, we will book a night at an airport hotel for the day that we return. So when we are leaving for our trip, we'll drop the car at the hotel near the airport, and take the hotel shuttle to the terminaI. When we fly back home, we'll have a bed waiting for us just after we get off the plane. I don't want to drive the 1 1/2 hour trip home from the airport after 10+ hours sitting in airplanes and airports and completely jetlagged. The beauty of it is that the night in the hotel costs just a few dollars more than two weeks of parking at the airport.

If you are traveling on the weekend, look at the suite/extended stay hotels. They are aimed at business people who may be working short-term in areas. Since a lot of these people are only there during the week, weekend rates for them can be the same price as a double room at a regular hotel and you get a mini-apartment with a small kitchenette and sitting room. They also tend to have full breakfast.

There was a double room I stayed in at Santa Monica here in California and it was me, my parents, 4 sisters and my older sisters boyfriend so there was quite a lot of us. It worked out since there was soooo much space in one room. The beds were in the same room but had double doors leading to the bedroom within the hotel room and in the walk-in space there was a large couch bed thing that of course pulls out and a kitchen as well as large flat screen TV's in both spaces. Just my double bed hotel experience 👍

I'm American but have had a lot of both. Germany is usually much better; way more variety and healthier. I like American breakfast at a restaurant, but at hotel usually limited to eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes /waffles, and breakfast cereal. And unlike in Germany the breakfast quality is usually pretty bad unless you're paying $125-150+/night. For whatever reason American hotels skimp big-time on the breakfast, while charging a lot for the room; US = bad hotel value (compared to Europe esp Germany which has some of the better hotel values in Western Europe). Although it depends on the region; the South, Midwest, and mountain states tend to be more reasonable.

Stayed in Chicago last week and the parking at the hotel was $62 plus tipping the valets twice.We were staying in a pretty expensive hotel and were upgraded to a luxury suite( my sister is an elite member with this hotel company ) . Similar experience. I had a conference to attend in St. Louis. $150 a night + $20 a day for parking AND that was the special conference rate! Screw that noise. I found an AirBNB two blocks away from the hotel. $90 a night for a full apartment right by coffee shops, shopping, and restaurants. Parking was a bit of a challenge but it was free street parking a couple blocks away.

The comments about breakfast in America are hilarious and seem to be from people who do not get out. First of all, Mark mentioned a few times that the *_free_* breakfast he highlighted was at a budget or mid-range hotel. Breakfast in America is absolutely fantastic. Many consider it the best meal of the day in the USA. Yes, you usually cannot order just cheese and rolls but your options are endless. *_Literally endless._* Eggs are not just par or hard boiled in the US. Scrambled, poached, fried over easy/medium/hard, sunny or omelette filled with scores of meats, cheeses and veg. Breakfast sandwiches are standard as well as breakfast burritos. Bagels and biscuits (and toasted bread) are on every menu. Sweet muffins, Danishes and doughnuts as well. French toast is as popular as pancakes and waffles. Speaking of, the US may not have Liege or Brussels waffles but thin or thick, square or round, American waffles are quite tasty nonetheless. And of course, anywhere you go, fresh fruit and yogurt as well as cereal are available. And if you want something quintessentially American, try biscuits and sausage gravy or chicken and waffles. Yup, breakfast in America is as good as anywhere on earth.
@notthegoatseguy
@notthegoatseguy 6 лет назад
Yep, this. But if you're trying to travel on a budget, most mid-range hotels will give some type of complimentary breakfast and it might help to not walk out the door already starving. You don't have to eat everything there at the crappy buffet, but drink some coffee and eat a piece of fruit or whatever so you don't over-order later.
@tosht2515
@tosht2515 6 лет назад
+notthegoatseguy Oh absolutely. I was simply responding to those that missed Mark saying that the bad breakfast he depicted was from budget hotels. They then made blanket statements that American breakfasts in general are awful. Not true. I also read that all hotel buffets are bad. Again, not true. I obviously love breakfast. *But to your point,* yes indeed, always take advantage of the complimentary food when available especially if one is a budget traveler. Coffee, toast and jam and a banana can get you through the morning. 👍

Also, if you come to the US and are eating a complimentary buffet breakfast, there is a Queue, if you are from an Asian country, just remember, there are 300 Million legal firearms in the US. This is not to discourage foreigners from coming here...there is a line... I personally love seeing tourists from other states or other countries, I work at a casino and I have seen a group of Asians ignore the line, I've also seen an American point a gun at these rude foreigners, even though it's illegal to carry a gun in a casino, it turns out the gun was also illegal.

Haha, the toilet paper thing made me laugh - I spent three weeks in NYC a few years ago and one of the accomodation options I was looking at was renting an apartment via AirBnB and the owner actually specified that you can't flush the paper! I haven't come across that since the early 2000's in a fairly remote Middle Eastern village, I did not expect that in NYC 🤣 Of course, then we found out that short term rentals were legally questionable at best so we ended up staying at an Upper West Side YMCA instead. Flushable toilets, but the weirdest shower temperature control I've ever come across :P

Aghr, we just came back and we were pretty surprised about a lot of point mentioned in the video, especially breakfast ("Were is normal bread? And tomatoes?"), size of the beds and hidden fees. Wish we could watch it before, but it was also fun exploring and being surprised on our own. There were two things that you didn't mention and were very surprising for us. First one was the way that there was only one "shower handle" (?) that controlled both temperature and intensity of the water flow - we kept looking for the other one until we've realized that this is one and only. The second thing was bedding, mainly covers. We're used to having duvet or at least blanket, while in the hotels we've stayed in a lot of covers were just very thin. Not sure if it is same across all states, but thought it might be worth mentioning, as from "European perspective" :) Thank you for the relevant content, as always :)

The "complimentary breakfast" or "continental breakfast" at motel chains is usually the Cheapest Lowest Quality Food Served In Amercia... powdered eggs, poor bread, margarine, fake juice, often bad coffee. So, while it is included in the price.. and you can eat it .. Since Breakfast is the Cheapest Meal to Eat in a Resturaunt in America.. it may well be worth spending $8 or $10 each to get a GOOD breakfast at a resturaunt where you WILL get eggs, ham, toast, potatos, coffee, and jam . At the free breakfast.. get muffins, fruit, to take in the car for later. Have your first cup of coffee. At some motels the breakfast is actually good enough to eat.. and then you can save the money.

When driving on the Interstates and crossing state lines, look for State Welcome Centers. They have lots of brochures on sights, restaurants, and places to stay. Many contain discount coupons as well. Some Centers will assist you in making hotel reservations. The hotels frequently have special rates for those reservations (much cheaper than walk-ins). It's been several years, but I was frequently able to get hotel rooms for $50 to $75 a night along the Interstates. This included free breakfast. Many of them offered commercial sliced bread for toast and bagels. Sometimes there was warm sausage gravy in a crockpot and biscuits. Most had cold cereals and instant oatmeal, fresh fruit, & sometimes hard boiled eggs. Larger hotels would have pay buffets. There could be different prices. If all you wanted was the cold items you paid less than if you wanted hot food as well. Usually scrambled eggs were on the line but you could get omelettes cooked to order as part of the buffet. If you will be staying several days in one place, look for a package deal. Room rate will be better and they frequently include buffet breakfast free or at a much lower price than usual.

One thing to be aware of is that using the phone in your room can be very expensive, sometimes even charging for local calls. The rates are usually posted on the phone itself, on a little card near the phone, or in the information book in the room. If you're coming from another country and have a cell phone, check your roaming rates against the hotel phone rates. You're going to spend money either way, but there's no need to spend more than you have to.

Personally I prefer hotels in the $60 to $80 range. You aren't getting gouged by resort fees, but get most of the same amenities. Also wanted to point out (because I have met people that didn't know) yes, you can flush toilet paper, but never feminine hygiene products! They will damage the plumbing and you will end up in an embarrassing situation. You can also request a wake up call if you're worried about your alarm not going off. I haven't experienced being able to leave the keys in the room for checkout in most hotels...I've mostly only seen this at higher end hotels. Most places have you turn them in at the front desk. One positive thing I can say about online booking is there have been situations where a hotel misrepresented itself (on multiple sites) and we were able to leave after checking in and the booking site found us new accommodations on the spot.

I travel 60-75 nights a year on my own dime. I do not travel to the Northeast. I have not paid over US$100 a night including taxes in 2017 and only three lights (in the Canadian Rockies) in 2016. It takes planning and a willingness to book months in advance if you are heading to high tourist areas. You might have to stay a little ways out of the center city which is NOT a problem as the places that we stay DON'T charge for parking, internet, or breakfast. In other words, there are a whole lot of places where you can stay in the US that are NOT going to break the bank.

A lot of places will hold your bags if you check in early and the room isn’t ready. Then you can go out and come back later to get your room.
@lestranged

Also if your flight leaving is in the evening, the hotel will hold your bags after you check out, so you can go do stuff during your last day and then pick up your bags and go to the airport.

Instead of a Late Check-out, many Hotels will allow you to check suitcases in a Left Luggage area. You can leave your bags in their secure office area behind the front desk, enjoy your day, then claim your bags & head to the airport.

Hotel bathroom tip to avoid tripping and slipping getting in and out of the 🛀, use the hotel towels. As Mark said, you can always get extra towels. When I travel , I take my own towels and pillowcases , have watched too many black light test exposés where hotel linens aren't as clean as one thinks. I'm not really that ocd about germs but I am at tines more aware of germs since my mom was a nurse. I mainly use my towels and switch out the pillow case on the,pillow I'm going to sleep on with my own pillowcase and put the other pillows from the bed on one of the chairs and keep the pillows on the other bed on it.

Another good tip if you are sneaky, the carts used by the cleaning staff are usually not locked up at night and in the morning, so if you explore the floor a bit, you could snag some extra coffee, pens, soaps, water bottles, and towels!

I usually take a picture of the minibar contents when I first move in the room and just before checking out just in case there's any discrepancy about that on the bill. As for glasses and cups provided in the room, I wash them again with either dishwashing liquid I'd bring or shampoo if need be. If the bed has a coverlet, I remove that and put it aside because I don't really know how often the hotel/motel washes it.

You talked about early check-in and late check-out, but I think you should also have mentioned late check-in. If a person is arriving later in the day (I've seen the time for "late" start as early as 7:00 PM or as late as midnight), it's best to confirm his or her arrival with the hotel earlier in the day, or the day before. This is especially true for hotels in resort/touristy areas or at any location during a special event (festival, large sporting event, national holiday, unexpected blizzard, etc.). This is because if the hotel is full or nearly full, and the person doesn't arrive on-time (the hotel thinks the person is a "no show"), the room he or she has reserved may be rented out to someone else who shows up at the last minute and needs a room. This, of course, leaves the person with nowhere to stay. So, it's best to avoid this situation, and all it takes is a very quick phone call to the hotel. I make it a practice to always call the hotel within 24 hours of my arrival if I am arriving after midnight (and for me this would even include arriving at 6:00 AM, like the example you provided in the video), even if I have a guaranteed reservation. Arrivals that late are unusual, and I know the hotel staff appreciates knowing to expect me coming in. (Plus, I feel better knowing they're expecting me.)

It's possible to pay entirely in cash in the US, though less common than in Europe. Some hotels will ask for a deposit 'for incidentals' (e.g. use of mini-bar, room service, etc.) if you do so (anywhere from $50-150); others won't. In general, the nicer and more corporate the hotel and more urban the location, the more they're going to want a credit card. Some chains will ask for a credit card at check in but not charge it and allow you to settle bill in cash at checkout (some will authorize the card, others just take the number). A trick to get the online price (which is usually but not always lower) without making a reservation online: walk into the hotel and ask for the price. If it's higher than the online price, ask them if they will match the online price. If they won't, ask them if you can make a reservation (for 1 minute from now) on the computer in the lobby, or using your phone, but mention that if you do so, they will lose the 10-15% they have to pay to the booking company, so it's better for them to just match the price. Works 90% of the time. If they still won't, just make the reservation then and there in the lobby.

Yes, I have worked in hotels in the US. Usually if you have a cash deposit, you can pay cash. Expect for a manager to inspect your room before you leave. If it's all ok, they will hand your cash back to you at check out.

One thing I’ve found when staying in hotels around the world lately is that a lot of places seem to want to place an extra guarantee on your card upon check in. Some places this is optional, but when staying in Boston last week they insisted on placing a $150 hold on my card before letting me check in, despite having pre-paid before hand.

Couple of possibilities 1 - they have ammenities like pay movies, restaurants where you can charge to the room etc that they want to make sure they get paid for... 2 - many hotels in the us are getting extremely strict about no-smoking policies and might want your card number to guatantee against smoking in the room.

I use to be a clerk, and I worked in house keeping with my mother at chain motels/hotels, and worked at a hot spring resort. My tip is to find off peak times of the year, and between 11am-3 during the week. Places slightly off the beaten path are not bad and have better choice of rooms. Personally the bathroom is the least of my worries, it's the blankets/bedspreads that seem to creep me out. Unless you booked advance overlapping the weekend realize Fri-Sun is going to be more as in price jabs, and after 4pm anytime is more. During the summer I would definitely just find resort campground with amenities since no one seems sits in a room all day.

Timeshare presentations are a really good trick to getting free to low cost rooms at resorts. We stayed in Orlando last summer for a week, and it ended up costing like $1250, but that was gas, food, and Universal Orlando tickets. We booked one for three days and the other for 4. They were both 2 bed 2 bath, and they both had pretty impressive pools.

i travel a lot for work, mostly in rural areas and small towns in the south. i greatly prefer motels because the outdoor exit gives me easier access to my tools and equipment as opposed to having to walk through a lobby or ride an elevator. some of you may not like us as we have been known to rebuild engines in the back of our truck in the parking lot of the motel. one thing for sure is that people are much more friendly and polite in the south.

The difference between free breakfast and non-free breakfast is that, the free breakfast is only continental breakfast which is just your basic grab and go mix of basic breakfast. Upper scale hotels that charge for breakfast, it is a made to order breakfast and includes a wide variety of options vs continental breakfast which has limited options. Needless to say. The mor you buy in bulk the cheaper the price which is why free breakfast can be offered

I was glad in the Azores that they had Portuguese on TV. Our pizza is not Italian. They're American pizzas, sometimes for a good price. They often have meat on them, and vegetables. It's more of a "gut-buster" usually. I like that most of our hotels are ample, often large. I'm American.

Higher end hotels will expect you to pay for WiFi, breakfast, and just about everything else. Two reasons. During the week their guests are usually business travelers and they don't care what it costs as it will be charged to corporate. And even then the business travelers might get it all free due to being rewards members. If you are not a business traveler they figure you have enough money to pay for the services since you are choosing to pay in a high end hotel. Budget and mid priced hotels are competing for the dollars of travelers that may not be able to write off wifi and breakfast so they offer them free to rope in the Truckers and other traveling workers. In that case getting the vacationing families is just gravy for them. Two general rules of thumb. Independent, ie not chain hotels, will either be dumps or worth 3 times what you paid. Read online reviews, they will be basically right. I traveled for almost a decade staying in small towns across the US and those two factors were consistent.

One thing that I think should be emphasized to people who come from low crime areas is that one must check with the front desk or some other knowledgeable person as to which areas to stay out of in some cities. Knowing these cities in advance would be useful. I have had trouble in some cities because I was not aware of the crime.

Continental Breakfast: A crappy meal of passable-ish muffins, and everything else is terrible with the RARE occasion you will get hot food. If you want a good breakfast, skip the cheap hotels and maybe call ahead to see what the breakfast will be before booking. I have usually been depressed by hotel breakfasts in the US myself (I do go cheap though and will often go elsewhere if I can). I just got back from my first ever Europe trip and the breakfasts were very impressive especially for the cost of the rooms I had. I mean damn, there was bacon and eggs everywhere, breads, cheeses, fresh fruit, mushrooms, beans, the works! Here in the US: it really depends on what kind of hotel you get that will dictate whether or not you have a good breakfast. Will you get a bunch of cheeses and nice heavy breads? Not likely in either case in anything other than a very nice and very "spendy" hotel. For whatever reason, people in the US don't tend to like or care about having good bread and cheeses aren't a typical breakfast item here. I personally loved being able to have brie with my morning breakfast on my trip.
