US National Anthem - Air Force / TV Sign off

Video taken from KRGV-TV Channel 5 (Weslaco, Texas) Oct. 10, 1998. After the station's sign-off, is a great male choir version of the US National Anthem set to video from the US Air Force with the tag "Aim High America." I don't know exactly which choir performed it, but it's a beautiful arrangement.

The good old days when every broadcast channel went off the air, and you had no choice but to go to sleep.
@thegoldensaber4531

Plenty of people used to do things other than get fat and watch tv. You could read, draw, write music, etc. I wish TV and computers never existed. There would be no texting and driving, and so many things would get accomplished. You know why so much shit used to get invented in the late 19th century and early 20th century? People weren't content with sitting on their ass, getting fat and wasting away. They were so bored they though of all kinds of cool stuff. There could be another Einstein in our society these days and we would never know it becuase they would be watching playing xbox or watching tv. Complacency with doing nothing will be the downfall of our society.
@Mysticinvestigations
@Mysticinvestigations 10 лет назад
***** Certainly that is a big factor. I'd probably have written at least a few books now if it wasn't for all the TV/internet distractions. In addition there's the general dumbing down of the education system. There has probably been a lot of people with potential that was never realized due to the inadequacies of education in this country. We have also gained a lot of taxes, regulations, and insane red tape that stand in the way of an individual creating new innovations, or starting a business. A free well educated populace creates a successful nation. It's no coincidence that the United States grew into the most powerful nation on the face of the Earth. Imagine where humanity would be now if we hadn't been held back by all the tyrannical regimes that dominated our history from the beginning of civilization.

MysticInvestigations Exactly. I work on computers for a living, and what people don't realize is that everything has an equal balance; on/off, ying/yang, black/white, etc. All of the good things that computers do come with an equal amount of bad. People just don't realize that because guys like me are keeping it all running smoothly behind the scenes. Computers made buying things online easy, but also exponentially increased credit card fraud and identity theft. You can meet people online, but now people get killed because they meet strangers and have no idea who they're dealing with. Hacking wouldn't be an issue. Those are just a few examples, but I honestly believe that society would have been much better off with computers never existing. The bad isn't worth the good. It's made our society completely dependent on technology. People seem to be getting more fat and more stupid by the day. One of these days I might just get rid of my computer and stop using them.
@TheUniversalEyes
@TheUniversalEyes 10 лет назад
***** I agree with you wholeheartedly, computers have ruined people's lives. However, I blame cable television for the start of the decline. People started getting more channels, which lead people to be focused more in the house than outside. Cable television also started the whole home shopping frenzy too, which made people more lazy. Then of course, the cell phones started rearing their ugly head, which lead to computers and the internet. Personally, I would love to see all these things disappear, so here is hoping for a nice future EMP event! Speaking of people or rather kids these days, they are addicted to video games and computers in a sick way. I remember last year my 11 year old nephew going without computers and video games for a week, he started having a nervous breakdown, he was crying and experiencing body twitches. It was a sad thing to see. I told him that when I was a kid, you spent your days outside playing, riding your bicycle and if you wanted to see one of your friends you would walk over to their house and knock on the door. I told him that I played all day long, maybe coming home at noon to get something quick to eat and drink only to head back out the door until dark. Once home and inside, you would eat dinner, take a bath and still have some time to listen to the radio or watch a television show (one show) by then, you were completely tired and ready to pass out. If you were lucky to have enough energy to stay up, it was probably midnight. Rarely did people stay up until 2-3 in the morning, unlike the kids today who are up all night long because they are wired on mountain dew and get no exercise to tire their bodies.

J.R.M. 6228 You described my childhood as well. A lot of time riding my bike in the woods. There were a handful of TV shows I watched regularly but most of the time I was outside. Even in the winter I'd stay outside until I was soaked, numb, and freezing. I remember one time I fell in a ditch of ice water, and still stayed outside for another hour. My fear was my father saying I couldn't go back outside again because he had issue with people going in, and out too much.

This is by far the best version of this anthem. Vocals are spot on especially the high not at the end with the jet turning away. I remember staying up in the l70's and 80's as a kid just to hear this. I used to think it was the Air Force Academy or Naval Academy Choir and had no idea it was song by Vocal Majority. Wonderful.

This is the Vocal Majority Chorus from Dallas, the 13-time International Barbershop Chorus Champions. We recorded this and the Air Force Hymn for the Air Force back in the early 80s. They used it in base theaters around the world - played before each movie. The videos were also picked up by many local TV stations to use as their "sign-off" each night.

+Frank Eastman Thank you for sharing. The versions done the VM are fantastic. It is my hope that the master tapes are still around somewhere and can be re-mastered for a commercial release from Vocal Majority, or those versions can be re-recorded some day. The Air Force Hymn is just wonderful.
@frankeastman1994
@frankeastman1994 8 лет назад
+FiveCentsPlease The songs were recorded on reel-to-reel tape, the best available medium back in those days. I am retired from the Vocal Majority after 27 years with them, so I'm not in the know about any plans to release or re-record these songs. It's a shame that the VCR recordings are in such poor shape.

God bless you good sir, for posting this info. I have loved this version of this TV signoff for the better part of 30 years, and have searched many times to find out who it was, simply to give credit where credit is due. I would give anything to have been in the room when this was recorded, just to hear it live, as even this lo-fi recording brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It is a little slice of of pure beauty. Thank you!
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 7 лет назад
+andybaldman Unfortunately according to the comments from The Vocal Majority it was a contract recording for the US Air Force so this version might not have been recorded for record sales. If the master tapes could be found, then it could be remastered for a CD release. Like mentioned above, it was recorded on reel-to-reel tapes. It is a wonderful arrangement.

And of course, after the last notes fade out and before we all sat down, we would then whimsically shout out "Play ball!"

I used to watch this every night when I was a kid in the late 80's/early 90's. It was part of the sign off for the local PBS station, WUSI TV-16 in Olney, Illinois. Like one of the other commenters, I've been searching for this clip, or at least the audio portion of it, on and off for several years. It is absolutely the most beautiful rendition of our national anthem that I have ever heard, and you just made my day! Thank you for posting it!

Yup, this is what I was looking for. And 1998 isn't that long ago, you'd think they stopped doing it in the 80s. Thanks uploader.

I remember this one the most. I wish the anthem would be played at least at the end of the day, before programming resumes. Stations could pause for the less than two minutes to honor our country, with the the playing of the anthem.

Thanks for the info. This is my favorite version of our beloved national anthem as well. I first heard it while working at a TV station in the 90s. As a former barbershopper myself, I would love to hear it recorded again in high quality by a top chorus like yours.

I'm old enough to remember the signing off of the television broadcast at the end of the day. This was beautiful but it would probably be banned, today.😒
