Naval News takes you aboard USS John L. Canley (ESB 6), the newest commissioned Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) in the U.S. Navy fleet and the sixth ship in the expeditionary mobile base platform.
We interview the Commanding Officer. Capt. Thomas Mays, as he takes us around his very large ship.
=====================
USS John L. Canley (ESB 6) was commissioned at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California, Feb. 17, 2024.
Expeditionary Sea Base ships are highly flexible platforms used across a broad range of military operations supporting multiple operational phases. Acting as a mobile sea base, they are a part of the critical access infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces and supplies to provide prepositioned equipment and sustainment with adaptable distribution capability.
These ships support Aviation Mine Countermeasure and Special Operations Force missions. In addition to the flight deck, the ESB has a hangar with two aviation operating spots capable of handling MH-53E equivalent helicopters, accommodations, workspaces, and ordnance storage for embarked force, enhanced command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I). These ships support embarked force mission planning and execution and has a reconfigurable mission deck area to store embarked force equipment, including mine sleds and Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs).
In 2020, Former Secretary of the Navy, Kenneth J. Braithwaite, declared that the fourth ship in the ESB program be named after Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley. Canley rescued more than 20 fellow Marines under enemy fire in Vietnam during the Battle of Huế City in 1968. In addition to the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest honor, Canley also receive the Bronze Star with Combat “V,” and the Purple Heart.

The ESBs are probably the most underappreciated ships out there. There sheer amount of capability they provide across so many mission areas at such a low cost is astounding.

why do they need this boat when an aircraft carrier can do the same thing? This is built exclusively for floating beside an aircraft carrier, off the coast of China, and dropping thousands of marines into China per day to make them stop sending troops to Taiwan.

why does the USA need this ship? we have aircraft carriers that perform the same functions. This was built with one purpose. The USA will float this in a carrier group in the pacific, and land thousands of marines into China and Taiwan WHILE the Aircraft carrier is launching fighters and bombers into China. This boat was built for war with China, and we just built two of them because they realized they were losing war games. sure its a good idea, but it also comes as a warning
@dennisnguyen8105
@dennisnguyen8105 6 месяцев назад
@@davidanalyst671 It is not a carrier but a floating sea base. Technically, a sea base can be a carrier but it is more flexible and function like a true sea base with all of its flexibility. It is not designed to land Marines in China but it is build to deter China from trying to take Taiwan by force. However, it is also suited to support Naval operations elsewhere. Lastly, yes if there is a protracted war, you can expect many of these ships will be built and some variants will have larger decks designed for more air operations. What is happening is that the US and the West is beginning to realize that future conflicts may end up lasting much longer and require a mixture of high tech, medium tech and low tech. Dumb shells might not be accurate but they are cheap and their guidance can't be messed with. The Ukraine War and the Houthi's attack on shipping will change how countries plan to fight in future wars.

I wonder how the ESB mission set differs from an LHA.
@allenbt11
@allenbt11 7 месяцев назад
An ESB is intended to be stationed off shore of a target area, hosting Spec Ops, small boat, and helicopter operations, over an extended time frame. Think Somalia before Blackhawk Down. Its slow and vulnerable to Surface, Submarine and Air threats, but you can park this thing offshore, and have 4 Acres of US Military base, any place there's an ocean and reasonable security from other naval threats. A LHA, while not fast, has enough speed to keep up with a Naval Task Force (or get someplace in a hurry for an emergency), has some limited self defense ability (aside from its aircraft) and has one primary job: Kick in the door with a Battalion of Marines. It has secondary roles as a small (air to ground focused) aircraft carrier with Harriers or F-35's as well evacuating either troops & civilians or rendering disaster aid.
@Pyromanemac
@Pyromanemac 7 месяцев назад
@@allenbt11 It can also be used in humanitarian efforts as well. As opposed to sending an aircraft carrier like we have seen in the past with katrina for example. Because of the modular mission deck, the ESB is more useful in these situations assuming the conex based systems are accessible. Plus it frees up the carriers for other duties. The use cases for the ESB as a platform is larger, in its effectiveness, than any other ship.

@ARCNA442

Totally different. An ESB can accommodate a couple hundred people and a handful of aircraft and has no sophisticated defenses or electronics. An LHA can accommodate 1600 Marines for long-term deployments, along with two dozen helicopters and fighter aircraft with fuel and munitions for fairly extensive operations, and has extensive medical and maintenance facilities. An LHA also has extremely capable self-defense sensors and weapons.
