In the mid-2000s, the small coal-mining town of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, was in a steep economic decline, with jobs dwindling and few opportunities of making a solid income. Now, just 10 years later, Hazleton seems to be on the rebound, but its population has also become 50 percent Latino. It's a story that's becoming more and more common across America, as small towns are forced to choose between preserving their “American” identities and saving their economies.

Yeah, of course Hispanics visit their own stores and churches here in Hazleton. As soon as you step in a white store or church, you get started at, you can feel you're not welcome. There's a lot of hate and rejection here from natives.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclar showed how the Immigrants from Europe played themselves to the point a family couldnt hope to buy a house to raise a family honestly. Just seems like that sometimes.

You can't complain about "not knowing anyone" if you're too racist to talk to them & get to know them as human beings. I live in a very diverse neighborhood. I love being in the mix & it makes life less boring for me. I even had a party with all of my neighbors in my house. For the most part we all get along. Everyone in my neighborhood is pretty much normal to me.

They may or may not be racist, but not all immigrants are interested in mixing with white people. I, too, live in a very diverse neighborhood and most of the immigrants around me just prefer to hang out with their own and speak their own language and go to their own churches and stores. What that means in a way is that "assimilation" is taking on a new tone. It's not what it used to be as times and attitudes have changed. But, I personally believe we are receiving too many, too fast. Plus, chain migration needs to stop. If you want to come here to work that is fine, but that does not mean your whole family deserves to be here as well.

@@KB-uy3lv It has nothing to do with anything. The biggest mistake of Ukraine was that they didn't completely break up with russia in 1990 . Eastern-europe did break-up with russia , they joined NATO and they joined EU , now even the poorest country in Europe have a higher living standard stable currency ,more democratic .more anything then russia , smart people.Countries like Ukraine , Belarus and Moldova stick with russia for too long and now they suffer .

Hazleton has become a crime and trash infested town due to all the immigrants just like most of eastern Pennsylvania. How can people not even take care of their own homes and clean their own trash?!

I think this an interesting success story , dead rust belt town economically desperate for people meets people desperate for a town to call home. like you can be nostalgic for your childhood but don't let that get in the way of actually improving the situation.

I am from hazleton. And yes a lot of Hispanics came here. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t come. They are looking for a new life here because they couldn’t get it where that came from. And after the fight video with the security guard came out we have been called dirty Hispanics. And I don’t appreciate that. We are trying to find a new life just like everybody else

Darren Scott - She can’t speak english because everything is translated to spanish, so she never needed to learn. Back in the day the european immigrants had no choice but to learn english.

The other important thing to note is that the locals in the area weren't filling the demand for cheap labor - for better or worse, in the 21st century, immigrants are largely the ones filling these cheap labor factory jobs, not white Americans. Plus a lot of the Hispanics in towns like Hazleton are Puerto Ricans which I think many people forget are born US citizens.

My Parents moved to Hazleton when I was a baby in the beginning of 2006 I was born in New Jersey 2005 then they moved in March 2006 *I'm Hispanic as well*

Puerto Ricans are pissed at mainlanders moving there to avoid taxes. And hardly any speak Spanish. A big difference is Hazelton would be a ghost town without the Hispanics willing to work so hard.

Maybe if the local white people actually worked the factory jobs still then we wouldn't need immigrant labor to come work our cheap labor jobs. I for one welcome hispanic immigrants to come contribute to the economies of our rust belt cities. But people like you would rather sit around and complain than actually welcome people who pay taxes and contribute to American businesses.
