Let me tell you something, brother. I'm 60 yrs old. I was there watching MTV the day this video aired back in 1985, and it was awesome seeing all these superstars together, jamming for a great cause. I haven't seen this video in several decades, and this brings back lots of happy memories. I want to thank you, because I never had any children, but seeing your expression on this reaction video makes me feel like a proud father seeing his kid opening presents on Christmas Day for the first time! It was HUGE !! It was so exciting. I listened to it so many times after recording it on a tape from the radio… only got to see the video when I was lucky to catch it on “Friday Night Videos”. I didn’t have MTV, grew up on a farm so no cable just three channels :). I also bought the piano sheet music lol to play it on repeat and imitate every single voice! It’s an instant difference between the 80s and today … I couldn’t just pull up the video online and “watch on repeat” … it was mostly not possible and a huge effort! Made this with all these stars so special … to catch the video and see them all was pure LUCK. At slumber parties we would play it over and over and then put on a performance where we split up the parts and played the part of each musical star. A WONDERFUL and very memorable part of my childhood- this song. Adore your comment about being proud and excited for him while he reacts and recognizes so many people :) just lovely!

LOL Some 35 years later and it still makes me laugh that when they do the shots of the choir, you see all these legendary singers....and Dan Akroyd 😆 My favorite part of the song though is when Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen are bouncing off of each other towards the end, though. This song is proof, that you can take amazing singers from different genres, different singing styles, different vocal abilities, different music abilities, different backgrounds, different races, different levels of success, & more than likely different points of view, yet when put together, for a cause that is dear to their hearts, there is absolutely *NO* difference whatsoever!!! 💗 **THIS SONG IS PURE MAGIC, & STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS** 💗

I agree with you 100%. I read somewhere, that John Denver very much wanted to be a part of this, but was not asked to join these other great voices. If they had wanted to include all possible great voices at the time, mid-1980s; then, including John Denver would have made perfect sense. It was said by someone close to John Denver, it hurt him the rest of his life not to be asked to be included.

@@sandyleewhite It's been quite a while since I read about it. I believe John Denver's management contacted someone, who was arranging for the singers to participate. I think they were told, that his voice & style of music wouldn't fit this song. It's such a shame, because they did include such a variety of singers. To me, even if they didn't give him a solo spot, he certainly should have been with the others for group choral parts.

@@kayblock-bourghs8285 I really don't understand that, if that was their reasoning, because there are Country & Folk singers in this song? It really is a shame though, because John Denver along with Karen Carpenter, have the most organic, natural, and beautiful voices, that I feel would be an amazing addition to any song......RIP John Denver, we miss you, and your golden voice 💖💖💖

On the 23rd October 1984 the BBC news had a report by corresponent Michael Buerk on the developing famine in Ethiopa, following three years of drought and a civil war. Up to seven milliion people were at risk of starvation if nothing was done. Watching the news that evening was Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the Irish punk band the Boomtown Rats. Bob was so moved by the news report and the apparent lack of action by the various affluent economies of the world, that he felt he had to do something. As a musician he thought perhaps he could organise a charity record to raise funds to send food to the millions affected by the famine. With the help of his friend Midge Ure (the lead singer of Scottish pop band Ultravox) Bob bullied and cajoled as many famous pop stars as he could to perform on the record. Being based in the UK and wanting to get the record released asap, Bob and Midge mostly concentrated on rounding up bands based in the UK, with the proviso that anyone who participated gave their time for free. The recording took one day, the 25th November 1984, and the 'super group' was named Band Aid, and the song called Do They Know It's Christmas. Included in the recording were bands and musicians such as Kool & the Gang, Bono from U2, Phil Collins, Banarama, Boy George & Culture Club (Bob famously phoned Boy George, who was in New York at the time, and told him to get his arse onto the next Concorde flight to London), Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, George Michael, Sting, Paul Weller, Status Quo. The single was released on the 3rd December 1984 and went straight to number 1 in the UK. It sold over 2 million copies worldwide. USA For Africa was co-ordinated by Harry Belafonte and Ken Kragen, inspired by the success that Bob and Band Aid had had in the UK, but this time using the cream of American talent at that time. The song We Are The World was recorded on the 21st January 1985, and released on the 7th March 1985. Bob Geldof travelled to Ethiopia to see how the funds raised by Band Aid were being spent, and realised that what had been raised should not be a one-off contribution. So using the same drive, blarney, bullying and downright fibs, he cajoled the biggest bands of the early Eighties to perform in two synchronised concerts to carry-on the fund raising for the millions affected by the famine - one in London and one in Philadelphia, for the first time using multiple satillites to live stream live concerts to virtually every country in the world. Live Aid took place on the 13th July 1985. Bob Geldof has since become an activist for sustainable development to help the poorest in Africa. He has also been given an honorary knighthood by the Queen for his charitable work. The BBC report can be seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XYOj_6OYuJc.html It's not an easy watch.

I remember Live Aid so well, me and my friends all got together at a friends house (in Dunedin NZ) to watch it. We were in our 20s.

Great summary. I'm not being a wise ass, but aren't all knighthoods at this point honorary? Serious question.

The sheer talent and star power in that room was unparalleled, it’s sad we don’t have those kind of performers today. I prefer Do They Know It’s Christmas and the UK artists but there’s no denying the number of legends on this song.

I remember when the video premiered on MTV. They MASSIVELY promoted it, and it seemed like everybody tuned in to watch ... including me. And yes, this was tied in to Live Aid. At the end of the event in Philadelphia, all the artists who performed that day joined together onstage to sing it. Same with "Do They Know It's Christmas" at the end of the event in London. ETA: That was the late James Ingram after Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross with Michael Jackson, Al Jarreau after Willie Nelson.

The one singer towards the end was the incredible James Ingram. You really need to react to some of his music. He had a soul and a voice beyond compare.

Yes! Personally, I would recommend doing a reaction to his version of "Somewhere Out There" with Linda Ronstadt! ❤️ Not necessarily his biggest hit, of course, but certainly a popular one.
