I'm seriously impressed by how well you did in identifying all the singers! There were a number of songs that came out at that time to raise money to help starving Ethiopians. The first batch was British, under the name "Band Aid," with the song "Don't They Know It's Christmas." Then Americans doing "We Are the World." Then Canadians coming together as "Northern Lights" to sing "Tears Are Not Enough." I'd really be interested in your reaction to that last one as quite a few of the singers were famous in the US as well.

That solo back-and-forth between Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen was actually shot & recorded after hours, after everyone else had left, and Quincy Jones, who felt the song needed an extra punch, actually called back Stevie & Bruce to record that one segment, which Quincy later incorporated in with the rest of the song.

To understand... in the mid 80s, Africa was experiencing severe drought and famine. A group of British rockers lead by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure released a record (Do They Know its Christmas) with all proceeds going to famine relief in Africa. Then USA rockers lead by Harry Belafonte, Ken Kragen and Quincey Jones, recorded the video here with the same goal. The last effort was LIVE AID. This is a weekend concert televised from three continents. The Live Aid video of Queen you watched is from that concert. Phil Collins flew on the SST Concord to all three continents and performed in USA, UK and Australia in the same concert. It was televised on MTV. Incredible concert. The finale song in the UK included Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and most of the huge array of rockers that performed throughout the weekend event. The videos of the Uk Christmas record and that finale are on You Tube. They raised over $200 million and it was sent to Africa. Unfortunately it was intercepted by a dictator and terrorist group who used it for weapons against its own citizens. Still... no generation before or after in music ever took on such a huge task which could have made a difference. Next to this, in 1986, you have Comic Relief USA by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal. They raised OVER $50 million for the homeless in the USA. I am very proud to be part of the generation that gave so much to humankind. ✌🏻

My favourite part is Cyndi Lauper's high "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" in the bridge .. She improvised it, after being asked to add something to Kim Carnes' part .. Kim was not able to give it enough intensity and depth by herself, so they tried having Huey Lewis and Cyndi do harmonies with her .. In the end Cyndi didn't want to overpower Kim, so Huey sang a harmony and Cyndi added her solo bit .. She nailed it !

This is one of the greatest feel-good songs of all time, in my opinion. It really is a representation of our society's potential to innovate and excel through diversity.

This is beautiful. It could never be reproduced, a lot of these performers have passed away since this was made in 1985.

This is an awesome video with many musical legends. I love hearing the contrasting vocals, especially Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. Another awesome video that I cannot stop watching over and over again is Dionne Warwick's "That's what friends are for". Dionne is joined by Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. You can't watch this video without having a smile on your face and a fuzzy feeling at the end.

This is the type of song you will most likely never hear again. All these legends doing one song in the same room. You just won't get this again. Quency Jones was a genius to do this.

You ladies did exceptionally well to name as many artists as you did off the bat. I still struggle now to name a lot of the artists but I believe the singer after Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder is James Ingram. There is another version of We Are the World which is We Are the World 25 for Haiti that was released in 2010.

I love We Are the World 25 for Haiti. Of course the original will always hold a special place in my heart but the Haiti version is my favorite as far as arrangement goes.

For all the talent assembled here it is James Ingram's performance with Ray Charles that moves me most. Just beautiful.

This whole creation was put together by Harry Belafonte, the Black man with the sweater singing in the back, an iconic entertainer, musician, actor and Civil Rights figure. He wanted to make an American version of what the British Band Aid production did the year before with “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” and then Lionel and Michael co wrote the song and iconic producer Quincy Jones produced it. My only fault with the whole thing is that one of the men who helped pioneer music as we know it, Smokey Robinson did not have a solo but with the Motown family, he was right upfront with the rest of them, Diana, Stevie, and Michael.

A "Where's Waldo?".... Find a young Dan Aykroyd. He happened to be in the studio that day and was asked to join for the recording. The rest is history. :)
