Above the eagle is the legend “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and below the eagle, the denomination is spelled out as “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
The coin is made of a copper-nickel clad composition, with an outer layer of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core. It has a diameter of 24.3 mm and a reeded edge. The 1996 quarter is a standard circulation coin, part of a series that continued until the introduction of the 50 State Quarters program in 1999.
