If you notice at 2:20, which is around 1994-1995, Japan's GDP probably hits roughly 70% of the U.S. GDP in 1994-1995. That is mighty impressive for an island nation with practically no resources and that is smaller than California. Japan's economy was also roughly 60% of the EU GDP. That is also mighty impressive, all things considered. Truly the peak of Japan's golden age as a great economic power.

Because it is Measured in US Dollars US will be straight line while changes in the value of Euro will change what the $ GDP of EU is even is Actual economy isn't going up or down much that is why EU is roller coaster ride
@nobilesnovushomo58
@nobilesnovushomo58 3 года назад
The Euro hasn't fluctuated enough to cause this, yes Euro devaluation and deflation has decreasing effects on investment as due to the uncertainty, but only to the extent the fluctuations devalue long term investments, and while the Euro fluctuates, it's overall stable and so are the economies, which means investment isn't deterred except in limited circumstances. The EU is having way deeper problems to have economic stagnation in stable countries and merely slight deviations in Euro valuation. Furthermore the Euro has on average been Stronger in value to the US dollar (1 euro = 1.19 dollar), which also impacts trade against Europe to an extent. If thy arguing about Real Gross Domestic Product, I can buy a 0.56 kg wheel of President Brie for usually 8.30, now thanks to the contagion it's 12.50. If I go to many restaurants, half the time they'll stuff me with entrees while waiting. If I go to a McDonalds, a Cheeseburger is 1.00, in England it's 1.59, in Germany it's 1.49 (Economists like to use McDonalds prices as an instrument in determining average food costs across the world because of the universal standardization, as well as globalization the food chain uses to procure food). While the valuation is in Dollars, it is the valuation of goods and services according to methodologies accepted the world over like the World Bank, you could just as easily measure it in Euros and the charts wouldn't change.

The incredible is that Japan in 1995, with only +-33% of USA's population and with a little territory (nearly 30x smaller) that have so many earthquakes had 75% of USA GDP. Greetings from Brazil
@stafer3
@stafer3 5 лет назад
You have to take that into context. There are few specific factors that made that happened. First, obviously work ethic and education, I don’t want to take that away from them, but also... After ww2 Japan military was abolished. And their defense was delegated to USA. Which allowed their defense spending be less than 1%. That’s large amount of resources you can use on development. Every year. For decades. USA has/had (will see with these trade wars) open market from the end of ww2. All American allies had access to US market. You can call it bribe. So they don’t switch allegiance to Soviets. They were all allowed to export almost unhindered to build up their economies. Obviously that’s not something that you can exploit indefinitely. This “I will protect my own market, but I will export sh*tload to America so I can grow rapidly” works only until you don’t become too big that it starts causing problems to America. After that America will just demand to open your own market as well, or they will start protecting their market just like you. These negotiations happened in 1985 and 1987 for Japan. Japan saved a lot on children. Taking care of child for 25 years until it’s released into job market is costly. Education alone for those two decades costs 250 thousand dollars. Take healthcare, housing, feeding it, sacrificing your own time, etc. They skipped that part. So for about 20 years they had tremendous amount of growth and productivity. Woman not at home with child, but working, means higher GDP. Money invested into company instead of paying for school, means higher GDP. So at the end of 1980s, they managed their pinnacle. But then 20 years were spent. Children that weren’t born, didn’t arrived in Japanese job market. Less workers, means smaller economy. And they are in economic stagnation ever since.
5 лет назад
@@stafer3 you are right, I agree with you. Even though I had said that they have a little territory and population (compared to USA), I know that to make this possible, it's necessary the help of your own population. Japan did so many things (like you had mentioned before) before to make this possible. I don't know if you will agree with me, but I think that the culture can (or not) help a country to be developed. (because for exemple, how can you make a country less corrupt if the persons always are "trying to get out in the front" to the other persons, in other words, the habitants being corrupt too?)

It was purely due to an overvalued Yen at that point - when converted using PPP's Japan's GDP was only around 38% of the USA's Using PPP's shows a more accurate picture, if you can get PPP data that is - this shows a relative fall from 38% in 1994 to 27% in 2018 compared to a much more dramatic fall from 71% to 24% if you convert using exchange rates.

Awesome work. Great grapics supported by astonishing music. It’s however important to note that the European Union didn’t exist in currunt form at most of the projected years and that many eastern European countries were part of the Soviet Union or followed socialistic policies (e.g. Yugoslavia), thus a lower (average) GDP for the EU as a whole.
@user-pd6bd7ir4z
@user-pd6bd7ir4z 5 лет назад
True but all the 10 new member states's GDP per capita has increased quite rapidly in recent years. Also, the combined population is still less than 1/5 of the old EU. The entire eastern flank of the EU has a SMALLER population than Germany. So dont worry too much.

Sanju Thinks Dude you can't comparing data between British Raj and WWII+CivilWar China when half of Chinese population were in war zone. By 1949, China and India have life expectancy at par and the difference was only dragged from 1960 to 1975, when Chinese GDP was at its weakest point. We have chosen a development blueprint to make HDI, etc. predate GDP development, that's it. There's no better or worse development blueprint, just choice - one choose the blueprint that works best for one's home country.

I thought about the same. Maybe it is every state's exports added up. Still, Germany alone almost has as many exports as the US. You can see that in this Channel's Export ranking Video...
