We bring you a beautiful video clip from our testers at the U.S.A.F. Test Pilot School located on Edwards Air Force Base. In this video pilot Tim McDonald is conducting a medium-risk test with a DG-1000S glider for the TPS Flying Qualities Branch. At TPS there is an event called the "Glider Spin" event, which is used to demonstrate classical spins and spin testing to the students. Currently they use an aging ASK-21 glider but the DG-1000S Stall & Spin Flight Test and Evaluation is being conducted to determine if it would be a suitable replacement for the ASK-21.
The inverted spins you saw in the video are part of the test team's investigation into the stall, spin and recovery characteristics of the aircraft. We hope you enjoy this amazing video which was shot by Mr. Brad White right here on Edwards Air Force Base! Learn more about the U.S.A.F. TPS at www.edwards.af.....

I've always loved the fact that a piece of yarn is an integral part of the "avionics" of sailplanes! Great video - thanks for sharing.

only come close to this once, accidentally, when I flew near the rotor of a wave. Interesting; not in a hurry to repeat, so prefer to watch this from the outside.

Watching the instruments throughout the spin gave me serious anxiety! I may or may not have peed a little 😳

Very tailheavy. 10 weight units installed in the tail. It does spin better that way. Pilot should check and press the green flashing weight counter before flight ;)

What this video didn't show was that the flight started with an aerotow behind an F-16.

A DG-1000 can inverted spin?! There's one at our gliding club. Shut up and take my money!
@glpxt
@glpxt 3 года назад
For inverted flight, the DG 1000 must be rigged with the 18m wing tips. But then, yes, it's pretty easy to spin inverted (starting form inverted flight), and it recovers promptly. But you lose a lot of height, so it's an expensive manoeuvre.
@GlidingTobster
@GlidingTobster 3 года назад
@@glpxt Interesting that it needs the 18m tips, we normally put the 15m tips on for upright spinning, which it's pretty good at. Flicking it off a high speed stall is pretty amusing too!
@glpxt
@glpxt 3 года назад
@@GlidingTobster Are you sure there is a 15m version? I only know it with 18m und 20m. With 18m it is fully aerobatic, with 20m inverted flight is forbidden.
@GlidingTobster
@GlidingTobster 3 года назад
@@glpxt I was completely brain dead and thinking of single seaters. I meant 18m; we normally operate our 1000 in 20m configuration, but have 18m tips for spinning and aeros.

@@GlidingTobster Just one warning re aerobatics with the DG 1000: Be careful with inverted downlines! The slippery aerodynamics combined with the slow roll rate will bring you uncomfortably close to vNE in figures like e.g. a cuban eight. There is a good reason why such figures are not part of the list of the allowed figures in the manual.

ha ha, this was a test flight for a glider, they push them to the max. Gliding is a very safe sport, more likely to be in a car crash than a plane crash! I am only 14, i can fly them on my own???

Since DG is currently writing a TM regarding aerobatics on the DG-1000S, which describes the figures in more detail, I'm wondering if any documentation came out of these tests? I understand that the ASK-21 handbook carries a pamflet that originates from the USAF. If there is any information that you could share, please let me know.

Back in 97, north of Scottsdale Az flying an acrobatic glider I tried to roll on top of a loop when my right foot slip from the pedal and I got distracted for a few seconds, enough to fall in an inverted flat spin. After a couple of turns the controls came alive again and we recovered form the spin. After we landed I thanked the safety pilot for the recovery and for my surprise he said that he had never seen that maneuver in his life, implying that it was not him who recovered the glider. If it wasn´t him and definitive not me then who took the controls?
@kirkglundal4289
@kirkglundal4289 6 месяцев назад
Gravity. Airspeed over the wing and control surfaces is your friend. To maintain the inverted spin, the pilot had to hold negative elevator.

Not a lot. Inverted you obviously have -1, Spinning is not a high G maneuver. Highest is the recovery, 1.5..3 g depending on how hard you pull out.

Was wondering if the DG doesn't have enough down elevator authority to hold in an inverted stall or spin, hence the series of inverted snap manoeuvres? Once did something similar in an L13 Blanik, entered an upright spin a little too aggressively whereupon it rolled on it's back, pulled through to horizontal and rolled on it's back and repeated. Did about three turns then recovered normally. On reflection we (instructor and I) determined we had done a series of snap rolls, full rudder was applied at about 5 knots before the stall, the stick held back for the duration. An interesting ride.

It's probably only the gear door that opened. They're held closed by elastic strings.
@luismaman9236
@luismaman9236 5 лет назад
it is impossible for the gear to peep out and then disapear again. The gear is always either up or down there is no inbetween.
@braddevendorf9901
@braddevendorf9901 3 года назад
Not the gear, but it looks like one of the gear doors partially opened up when pulling out of the dive. That was a high speed pull up and air can get into the seems of the doors and pull the small doors open. My PIK-20B would do that when I did a low high speed pass. Observers from the ground told be about it. I later fixed it with some stiffer bungee cords. They loose elasticity over time and need replacement.
