Go to the wiki page. It’s very good and gives you the reading order. For HCs it’s the fantographic box set and the dark horse saga and that’s it. The new IDW is after the dark horse stuff. The colour reprints are obviously earlier.
I F’ing love Usagi Yojimbo. I read the Saga books in between heavy reading to kind of clean my palette. Just did the whole sandman run and I would take a break and read the Usagi books. It’s a light easy read but also really well done.
Worth noting what Omar says about the long OOP and horribly expensive on eBay Fantagraphics set: it’s being reprinted. The UK pre-order I made suggests it’ll be out in August. Judging by the last one, probably don’t dawdle because once it’s gone, it’ll be hellishly expensive again.
OMG... I am so glad you did this video. It's like you read my mind. Yes, please do reading order. I bought origins, but found out it is the Fantagraphics collection. I preordered the reprint, but now I am regretting that purchase, and wondering if I should stick with just the new IDW color printings. What would you recommend for a new collector?
Very, very late to Usagi Yojimbo, but my goodness does this look fun! I am LOVING the colors. While the hardcover set from fantagraphics is beautiful, I love these colors too much. Just ordered the first two volumes!
Always been intrigued by the series but never got around to reading it. I believe I have a crossover with Usagi in the IDW collection of TMNT. Another series I've fallen behind on and still love. If it's worth reading (Usagi Yojimbo), I'll try to get around it. Anything that has martial arts, samurais, ninjas, assassins always captures my interest in manga. I think I've exhausted all that I could find from Kazuo Koike, Goseki Kojima, Ryoichi Ikegami and Sho Fumimura in english translation. It definitely gets harder to find their works if the publishers stop producing their work after awhile from its original release.
Usagi Yojimbo Saga TP Vol 02 should be coming out in July, so IDW is continuing the ordered releases. Also Fantagraphics has a preorder up on their webpage for the Usagi Yojimbo Special Edition Hardcover Box Set that you showed in the video. This is the easiest way to get the first 7 books and it will be in hardcover format. Unfortunately getting Usagi in HC can be a complicated endeavor so this is the easiest way.
Here I am with 10 Volumes of the Usagi Yojimbo Saga and the IDW Artist Select Grasscutter and NOW they want to add color? Man, look. I'm gonna have to buy these
Ordered Fantagraphics box set for first time reading - I love the deep blacks in black and white plus it's OHC. Hoping Dark Horse reprints the HC. I will hold onto IDW HC.
It's not clear that the Origins IDW series will be completed and will have all of volume 1 republished in color. IDW just lost the UY publishing rights a few weeks ago...
Can’t believe Usagi already been 37 years old, which is as old as myself lol. Anyway I got these IDW three books. It’s kinda look weird on my book shelf with Usagi Yojimbo Saga vol 2 & 3. Would love if you make reading order for this amazing series :3
If IDW is going to collect everything in color I'd stick to that... but does Dark Horse and Fantagraphics get to keep the volumes they are publishing? I wonder what type of deals Stan has with these companies...
O, are you going to do the Fantographics box set review whenever it is that u get early copy to review. I blindly pre ordered it from dcbs, hop its good!!
I have these in singles. I was planning on doing custom binds with the equivalent of three trades per volume. But suddenly #20 is starting to blow up in value and now I'm having second thoughts.
This may sound like a weird question but are those books sewn signatures glued to a softcover? I'm planning on custom binding the entire usagi run and Darkhorse does a great job with sewn bound softcovers and im wondering if IDW uses the same binding method or if i need to wait for HCs to come out
I had Usagi Yojimbo in my collection years ago before I sold it all. A friend has gotten me back into comics and I want to return to Usagi's world again. I'd like to collect the colour versions; are these 3 the only volumes available in colour so far?
Thanks, Omar! I've been reading Usagi since the early 90s... longer than mainstream Marvel, even... but have not yet picked up any from the IDW series. Just got the end of the Dark Horse collections with Saga Vol. 9. I am curious to know, maybe for a future video, about the size comparisons of the IDW trades with those of Fantagraphics and Dark Horse. I have all but three of the original trades from both and these appear to be larger format books, so I'm curious to know about the size comparisons. Also, Tom Luth recently retired from coloring at the end of last year. I believe issue #14 of Vol. 4 was his last. Do you know who will be coloring the original issues moving forward, or have any information for whether IDW will use the original Mirage colors when they get to Vol. 2's reprints? Thanks.
