I like how Sakai adds background to things to things that are introduced in the story like how kites were made and every small detail of the tea ceremony which Sakai had the opportunity to take part in one. I still have the original release. Sakai signed and sketched in each book.

Probably my most treasured collected edition of the last two years. Now if only we can get the hardcover SAGA collections reprinted! UY is one of the best comics in existence. If you have never read it, do yourself a favour, treat yourself to some bunny goodness. (No, not Sailor Moon - lol). But hurry before it goes out of print again!

I also missed out on the first hardcovers but eventually got the paperback edition. I just got this one delivered from CGN and I absolutely love it. I'm so happy to add this to my library.

This set is absolutely fantastic. The artwork and writing is immense. Am now picking up the Dark Horse 'saga' paperbacks. Got this special edition in paperback, as the hardcover was nowhere to be found at the time. Was tempted to pick it up in hardcover now but of course that can go to something new... Like Deconstructing the Jodoverse...

Every time I read Usagi, I always hear the music from Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo in my head during scenes when Usagi is walking around.

I never thought they would reprint the hardcovers so I bought the softcover years ago and met Stan Sakai. Nice guy and he signed my books. I just can't justify spending that amount on what would essentially be some pieces of hardened cardboard since I already have signed softcover copies. But to all who have the coin definitely get it. Its a wonderful collection!

My copy finally arrived yesterday. Nice to see that Fantagraphics pulled through for me, unlike another certain company's recent releases. Now the question becomes... do I "retire" my original 7 TPBs? 🤔

I know "yojimbo" just means "bodyguard", but it always makes me think specifically of the titular character of Yojimbo, the classic Akira Kurosawa film.

I was so happy to get this. My main ‘whale’, having missed *two* ridiculously cheap UK-based eBay auctions of the original printing-one by about five minutes. (It was misspelled. Someone got a bargain.) I’m amazed how few places had it for sale, though, and how rapidly it appears to have disappeared. I would have thought the print run would have been bigger.

Usagi Yojimbo isn't as big in the UK as the US unfortunately. I'm from the UK and picked the special edition on Reed Comics they have a sale on at the moment so please feel free to get it.

This box set looks exactly like the softcover edition I bought almost two years ago but in hardcover. I wonder how the paper quality is between the SC edition and the HC edition. Yeah I'm hesitating to pull the trigger on this while I still can. And I wonder if it's a good idea as I started to buy the new printings of Usagi Yojimbo Saga paperbacks.

Nice review! As of Sep 18th 2021 this is "out of stock", I'm hoping this doesn't mean out of print again. Do you think Fantagraphics have more on the way, or was this a limited run? Edit* 10/2/21 I just ordered mine, it became available again on Fantagraphics! So stoked!

Probably not. Since this is all Fanta owns the rights to. Yes, I saw that Fanta will restock more. But don't know when.

This is the stuff that’s only been released by Fantagraphics. Volumes 1-7 are in this box set. Think of the dark horse saga books as volumes 8 and up.

Fantagraphic only has the right to print this era. The following story is from dark horse and they are reprinting the tpb complete collection. The hardcover limited edition is oop and won't be reprinted. After the dark horse era, Stan Sakai decided to switch company from dark horse to IDW after many years. The most recent stories is published by IDW and it is in color. IDW is printing the thin tpb of the recent stories and they are also printing the recolored original stories in tpb format.
