A close look at the two-volume, hardcover, slipcased box set 'Special Edition' of Usagi Yojimbo's first decade of stories, published by Fantagraphics Books.
We dive into the production specs (like the covers, endpapers, binding and paper) as well as the contents (with a thorough survey of the extras and special features) that makes this edition so 'special'.
This hardcover set is a bit of a rarity now due to being out of print, but it remains a fantastic way to enjoy the begining of this great series, and makes a perfect shelf companion to the volumes of Dark Horse's Usagi Yojimbo Saga, which continue from directly from these volumes.

Sorry about the background traffic noise - I was in two minds about if to upload or just redo everything. I went with not missing a 'deadline' and working with what I got/ learning lessons for another day. I hope it's not too bad!

SO happy I pre-ordered this edition when it was available. I had no idea it would become so rare. It is an amazing book which I will be getting Stan to sign this week at a con!

I know the paperback box set has been reprinted; I don't think Fantagraphics is planning to reprint the HC though, although it would be good to be wrong on that since it's such a great collection!

@@vishalyalagala4963 Yes, Fantagraphics did reprint it and it was available here in India, including in bookstores, for a while but now I think it's back to being unavailable. A friend of mine found a set in Blossom bookstore in Bangalore but Amazon India seems to be out, unfortunately .

I’m very lucky I just found this hardcover edition for an affordable price. I am someone who really likes to read things from the very start and only learned about this edition through this video. Very eager to read this!

Excellent! The Fantagraphics paperback box set is still around so that would always have been an option (plus I think now IDW is reprinting all the original stories volume by volume) but the hardcover box set is a special treat and I'm sure you'll love it!

Very nice set of books, and well pesented as always by ou favorite host! I wish I had bought this when it came out. When it comes up on Ebay it commands high prices. (The background noise didn't bother me at all. In fact, I didn't notice it)

I love these books! And never give up hope - I spent four years looking for a decent price and caught a lucky break on ebay out of the blue one day. You just never know. 🤞

Just subscribed! I've been looking for these Usagi volumes for a long time, so I was really excited to hear they are back in print. One point of advice (from someone who runs a similarly-formatted channel): you might want to put Amazon affiliate links in the descriptions of your videos. I'll help your viewers buy the books more quickly, and it can help earn the channel a bit of extra revenue. Keep up the great reviews!

I watched your UY videos yesterday but I missed this one. I have the second edition of this which is a red boxset and paperback volumes. Not read it yet but now I know it collects all the pre Dark Horse material. I'll get reading it soon.

Thank you so much for this review! I originally started reading Usagi Yojimbo years ago back before he was part of Dark Horse, but when he transferred over I lost track and was never able to finish the first big story. :( So I went to Barnes and Noble's site to see about buying them (as Amazon's prices right now are outrageous!) when I saw this Special Edition. I do have one question if you have time - does the 2nd volume end on a somewhat satisfying note? It may be some time before I can buy the next part in the series and I'd like to be prepared. XD

So glad you liked this video! If you are thinking about buying this box set here (or the paperback edition) you should note that it collects the first and earliest stories from Albedo and Fantahraohics, so probably the stories you read before the move to Mirage and then Dark Horse. If you want the Mirage+Dark Horse stories you'll want the volumes of the Usagi Yojimbo Saga that I show in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1XN-v4BykAM.html But to answer your question about these volumes, the ending is fine, the stories come to a satisfying conclusion and you're left with a sense that adventures will continue but no cliffhanger really (although the story picks up immediately after in the next volumes) I hope that makes sense but let me know if that doesn't! 😁

I would realy love to get a hold on these volumes. But they are extremely hard to get for a reasonable price. In ebay I think it is being sold for $300. Can I please ask what should be reasonable price for this volumes? Thanks Jay

The paperback edition (also two large volumes in a slipcase) has been reprinted and is more easily available now (for example on Infibeam India). Unless you are insistent on the hardcover edition, that would be a fine and easy way to get all the first stories of Usagi Yojimbo!

Does this box set ,in any way, end in a cliffhanger? Or does it wrap up the included stories properly? Also, would it be satisfactory ti read just this collection, avoiding Dark Horse editions completely?

Yes this is where it all starts so this set collects the Albedo, Critters and Fantagraphics series. It does not end on a cliffhanger, the adventure ends properly, but the series continued under Mirage comics almost immediately and picked up exactly where this ends, which is fun. Still, you could ignore this and start from there if you wanted too, it’s all excellent and easy to jump into.
