USB direct to MIDI with no laptop

It's been a long-standing irit for me that USB keyboards will only talk to older MIDI instrument with the help of a computer. With this DoReMidi box I can make them talk almost directly to each other.
It's not perfect, but it's a great alternative. Next step, 'let's see a DoReMidi that's tidily built into the socket of a USB to midi cable!

Just goes to show that when midi was released commercially back in 1983 they got it right first time and for nearly 40 years, there has never been a compatibility issue with anything.

Wow great 👍 Thank you for reviewing the product and company. I'm saving to buy "Dual USB MIDI host" from them soon 😃 to connect between my units.

That's great! thanks for sharing. We will continue to improve the product. The power consumption of the USB MIDI HOST is very small. It is recommended not to use a power bank to power the USB MIDI HOST. The power bank will think it is full and cut off the power. The compatible list is part of the known models, and the USB MIDI devices that are "USB Class Compliant" are all compatible.

Thanks so much for commenting here! I'll keep those suggestions in mind. Also I'd like to re-iterate my idea - having USB to midi all in one cable ie. no connection box in the middle. Hope to see that one day!

Hey, is the doremidi host able to route midi channels too? like say 6 channels from one instrument into 1 synthesizer? That'd be a really great help to know.

I've bought a Kenton USB Host that does the same job. I bought it to connect a Casio CT-X3000, CT-S1000V, CT-S1 and a Yamaha PSS A-50 to gear with traditional MIDI DINs. Not tried it out just yet, but I'll let you know when I do. Nice video mate, liked.

It works fine for me, I have not run into any problems except using a non-dedicated USB always on slot. power banks works great, and the dedicated always on USB port of the laptop. I used it constantly with my Aerophone AE-10 wind controller on every gear I have. The Aerophone AE-10 doesn't have a 5 pin midi out port. I'm currently connected to the Polyend Tracker with my Aerophone. to write a composition on the Polyend Tracker. I have also use it to connect to the MOTU 128 express 8x8 midi and played 3 synth with just one wind controller, assign to 3 different channel. Very convenient to switch tone on the fly on the Aerophone. Another route to consider that I am looking into is the Conductivelabs MRCC series, the MRCC 880 has 4 in and 4 out and selection option on the unit itself without a computer. the small one is about $200 and the big one is around $450 but you could connect twice as many synth if you have a large studio. I also have the Dore midi merge-3 3in/1out. I found the DoreMidi to be a good product. The MidiSolution was a little more spendy. But seriously take a look at Conductivelabs !

Your channel is always invaluable bro, much obliged. This issue has been the bane of my existence. I just want to send PC to my zoom pedals (USB) and my line 6 (5 pin) from a midi controller (both) you'd think it would be simple, I can make it happen through reaper but as you said, who wants to lug a laptop around. Does anyone know if the M-Vave thing can operate standalone without the switcher? They sell it by itself, so I'm hoping.

This and the Kenton box are fine if you only have one USB MIDI device, and it's class-compliant, but as soon as you want to use more than one USB MIDI device (e.g. two USB MIDI controllers), you need to look elsewhere. I'm using a mini Windows PC as the USB host, into which I plug my two USB controllers and a Blokas MidiHub, which has a USB port and eight MIDI DIN ports for my non-USB MIDI devices (synths, etc). The nice thing about using an actual PC is that I can also run any device editors, e.g. to configure my controllers or the MidiHub.

I wonder if its a class compliance issue. Not all USB Midi devices fully implement the class compliance USB-Midi specification or implement it non-standardly. (Ie I have this weird old Cubase Usb controller keyboard. Great keyboard but needs a USB driver to work. I suspect the DoReMidi would be very confused by it. But my whacky old Behringer keyboard works perfectly without a driver). My suspicion is, if it needs a driver, it wont work, but if it works out the box, it'll work with the DoReMidi just fine.

I've currently got one of these connecting my old MIDI keyboards and sequencer to my new Yamaha PSR-E473, which doesn't have DIN ports of it's own. Very often there are sustained notes in the receiving keyboard, as if the Note Off command is not being communicated ofyen enough. If there is no firmware upgrade for this issue, I'm going to have to use something else.

Could this be used to connect a usb midi breath controller to a midi sound module ( to control expression on the module)? Also, Love the PMA-5. I used to have two of them. Im sorry now that I sold them, but I’m amazed the internal battery on yours is still working since that has to be at least twenty years old.

It’s pushing 30 years old actually! Amazingly big indeed. As for your breath controller, I can’t see any reason why it was wouldn’t work, but then midi is a very fickle thing!

Can the doremidi route midi channels? I have a midi controller guitar that has different channels for each string and I've been looking around for a way to route all of them into one for a while now, and this doremidi's the closest thing that I can get some vague info on.

Great question. I see that the manufacturer has added a comment below, I'd suggest replying to that comment with your question. I'm tempted to answer 'yes' but as you've seen in the video, it's a pretty fussy device and there might be compatibility issues that I'm not aware of. Let us know the outcome, I'd be interested :)

I just looked into that product. Unfortunately it requires a connection to a host computer and has no on-board midi routing/merging capability. You need to run software like MIDI-OX to dictate the routing of signals. A big miss, because if they had made a 6x6 MIDI-DIN / 3 USB router/merger, that would have been killer.

So I looked at this again and it escaped me you tried the Monologue with the Sonicware and it worked! So seems there was a workaround! What was it? How did you get a non compatible USB device to be recognized? Inquiring minds would LOOOVE to know! And yes, most mission critical devices require MAINS power as it is constant and above all, higher AMPS. Be aware, the AMPS! 5V 1A is too low and yet it is so common a USB charger. You need 5V 1.5A or higher Amps. Take it from me, I have a teenage son who goes through chargers and phones like crazy cause he still refuses to listen to DAD about the amps, and still insists on using the crappy 5V 1A chargers that do not have enough power to reliably charge his phone or his bluetooth headphones/speaker. I constantly hear him yelling when the power cuts out on his music. So 5V 1.5A or higher as that DoReMidi IS a mini computer like a Cell phone is..
@gearfacts
@gearfacts Год назад
I didn't really use a work-around, so I have no clever tricks to reveal. I think the machine is simply compatible with more instruments than it claims to be. I'm pretty happy that I can use my PSR-E463 as a controller for old gear now. That alone makes it worth owning. Pretty good product, not a perfect solution but pretty good :)

Yeah I've been meaning to make a Liven video for the past two months since I got it. It definitely has a sound that's not classically FM though, so it's interesting from that perspective.

Good idea but......poorly executed. Looking at eBay, Amazon, there's a few of these units, generic brands but probably same/similar. Guess not a lot of money if they work..I'd be interested if they would work with older Emu, Yamaha, Roland, Korg etc modules, keyboards. Nice video 👍
@gearfacts
@gearfacts Год назад
Yeah they work well with the older gear, it's the USB side of things that sometimes has trouble. Once it understands the USB-out signal it'll talk to any midi device, new or old. I agree though, the design could be slightly better. As mentioned in another comment below, I think there's no reason why basic USB to midi I/O couldn't be built into the actual sockets of the cable ie. no box. See also my video about the Retrokits RK midi cable. It's not USB to MIDI but it demonstrated that circuitry can be built into sockets that are the same size as standard sockets: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bOvvQ5ZqCGo.html&ab_channel=Gearfacts
