just wanted to say thanks for all your videos. They do help me and I wanted to make sure you know that I appreciate your knowledge and the way that you present your methods and even your failures. When I started doing electronic repair I would get discouraged by the ones that was not repairable. I think it is important to let the newbies know that not everything is fixable withing a budget that is.

Hi Sorin, I found you a week or so ago and watch your videos with amazement. Are there any videos where you teach the very basics of testing including how to power up circuit boards using programmable power supply, any tips on how to attach leads correctly, what components to check current or voltage ie which components not to touch with a multimeter on Ohms setting, where to connect grounds, your general working setup, etc? I've watched some videos where you are checking component but there is no overview of what you are doing elsewhere on the board ie checking voltages or current or whatever. You're clearly a genius. I wish I could learn 1% of what you know. It's simply incredible how you make assumptions (through vast knowledge) of where data, power or current may be going on a board and through which components. Simply incredible! I would love to learn these skills. Do you have a degree in electronic engineering or are you self-taught over decades?

Another great job done, dear Sorin. But take into account that these are inductors, not resistors. In fact, they are there to protect the very sensitive data lines from external "attacks". Please let me know if you are in the need of some model of Apple schematic and boardview. Thanks a lot for your excellent job!. And...let me make you a question...which one is your hot air station?, it is really FAST!, and it works like a charm!. Thanks in advance.

@kalindimitrov5629

@@Qban220 The defected part should be a common mode choke, which continues really thin wires inside, and in that case thay have worked as fuse :)

If a zapper would have been used it would fry much more then what we have here. Someone probably shorted out the 5v to data by having a lightning charging cable plugged in and plopping around until it touched something metal or fell into a cup of water.
@Qban220
@Qban220 4 года назад
@@kalindimitrov5629 No! try it for your self, It would fry 5v rail as well. It's designed to kill the logic board not just usb communication. Macbook is no exception, more likely it was a defective usb drive or device shorting 5v with data line.

What if the owner has a USB device with power pin shorted to data and plugs it in again - won't that just blow the board again? Doesn't the fact that both ports failed in the same way strongly suggest a dodgy device plugged into each port in turn? Won't he just do the same thing again and be convinced Sorin did a bad job...?

I had this similar problem with a Acer laptop, but this was the hub chip died, the reason was a damaged USB connector, 5V surely turned it bad on a data line ..., i could not fix. Good video, even if a rarely work on Macbooks, that is not in the preferences of peoples around here.

To drive external USB HDDs etc. TWO USB ports are DEAD! Totally.. Another transmits data but no power... Last one transmits data but only low power... For SD/XD card readers and such like, but not external HDDs... keyboards... I think I have some ideas, now... Stay tuned... J.C.

I had this issue in my microphone. It happened because of a fault USB hub that shorted. The short resulted in a power surge to the datalines which then fried the datalines. Fortunately, there was an ESD protection in the datalines, so it costs 5 cents to fix.

The other is not recognized. The voltage is 5V. However, there will be a short on the deira line + voltage. A short circuit occurs as a result of energizing the ground part and positive voltage. Please advise where to check.

here is my experience, my usb stopped work when i try to control a relay with a microcontroller via usb, somehow it doesnt work, later i realized that is highly possible the EMF from relay possibe burned the resistor, because when i check the emf voltage from relay when I turn it off, it can go 10V, that is definitely too high. thx for pointing out the resistor burn out problem. before i only know dont connect relay to usb straight away without diode protection. now it is a close loop evidence

Me thinks you will get this back soon, if you do not tell them that the usb device they tried to plug in is faulty (shorted) in someway, they have obviously tried it in one socket with no result then moved it other to the second port and killed that too as it suggests by having the exact same signal path resistor open circuit!

Found this video as I am trying to repair a friends Macbook Pro Early 2011. Their HDD died and I have fitted a new HDD and when trying to boot from a USB OS Drive to reinstall an OS the USB ports were not recognised. After installing the OS using Internet Recovery the USB Ports were still not working. Tried resetting SMC and NVRAM - no joy. When booting as single user I get this message at the end of the boot process: AppleUSBHostPort::InterruptOccurred: overcurrent detected with port status 0x4000, localSimulatedInterrupts = 0x0 Also getting a USB Ports disabled due to a device drawing too much power when the OS is running and I try to use a USB port. A powered USB Hub does not work either. Not checked voltage on the 5v lines yet but will do. When testing the resistors do I set the multimeter to Ohms? I can't do Surface Mount repairs - no tools and not sure if it would be worth the cost to get it repaired? Any thoughts?

Strange that it is a few ohms on the other boards or did you mean a few kilo ohms? Can you measure the resistor (next time) of the one you put in and the ones that came out? One suggestion is that these resistor were damaged due to sudden shrinking caused by the water damage. May be the typical temp of that region of the main board is quite high. My 2 cents

That is why there are mandatory basic tests to do before returning a fixed computer to a customer. You test keyboard, USBs, Wifi, sound, webcam, touchpad. If you do those tests, you know for sure that USB is working when you return the computer to the customer. If he comes back 3 months later, sorry but we have tested your USBs and they were working fine. If you don't test, you will never know if it is your fault or customer's fault.
