having played in a marching band...to be able to march where julius ceasar and marc anthony walked?freaking awesomeness!! and to be the trojan band too?? will never forget this!!
I'm so glad for you! I know you must have had a wonderful, exciting educational trip. Please say hi to Doctor Bartner for me. He's turned you into the best college marching band in the USA. By the way, Dr. Bartner and I are the same age. Good luck to you in life and God Bless you. With love, Patti Castro, Vallejo, CA
Normally, the USC compilation is in four parts. 1. "The fanfare" 2. "Tribute to Troy" 3. "Fight On" (this is the USC fight song) 4. "Conquest" What you're hearing here is "Tribute to "Troy." It's appropriate the band is playing this at the Roman Coliseum because Rome, according to one ancient myth, from "The Aeneid", Virgil relates that, after the sack of Troy by the Greeks, the Trojan prince Aeneas sailed westward across the Mediterranean eventually reaching the Tiber River to found Rome. So, the song "Tribute to Troy" is the Roman Coliseum's way of respecting Rome's founder!
I used to hear the Trojan band practicing at the baseball field right next to the men's dorm at USC. And here at Rome the familiar sound . Awesome! Thanks.
This may be the coolest thing I have seen on RU-vid!!!! I was there just before this happened and never heard of it. I can only imagine what me and my husband (alumnus) would have done when we were there and heard our boys.
It sounds like a triumphant army returning from battle! Not a fan - but yes it is absolutely an awesome fight song. I will admit that it is probably the best fight song I've ever heard. I wonder who was the composer.
"Fight On" is the fight song of the University of Southern California. It was composed in 1922 by USC dental student, Milo Sweet, with lyrics by Sweet and Glen Grant, for a student spirit competition.
I just noticed that the colors of Serie A club AS Roma are rather similar to USC's colors. Despite the fact that "calcio" (soccer) has nothing to do with the football played by USC, there is a connection through SC's nickname. AS Roma's club crest features Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. According to Plutarch, they were descendants of Aeneas, the prince of Troy who fled to Latium (the region in which Rome was later founded) after the Trojan War. Long story short, is it fitting that the USCTMB played a couple numbers in Rome? Hell yeah. FIGHT ON!
2. Upstaging? Not even worth addressing 3. Frightening them? You are nuts my friend. All around me (and you see them going to the railing in my video) were in awe by the presence of the band size and volume of sound. Many smiles and clapping after the cadence precession and the concert that was given after. GREAT SHOW! Great sound, flag bearers and pommies! Only the tone deaf or uninitiated would not have been excited. Great presentation and a classy, well-run group.
It’s cool because they are dressed as warriors from past Ages and are playing a heroic March and you get the kind of feel what it must have been like. And seeing as how Italians don’t do marching college bands it must have been great! Italians uniforms are much more Napoleonic.
Part of the grandeur of the Spirit of Troy is the volume and size of the band. If you've ever been to a USC home game, and sat on the home side during the pregame show, you know what I mean. Epic
HI guys, I am italian, even if not from Rome.I like all about DCI and Marching Bands. I personally found this "invasion" fantastic!! Unfortunately i wasn't there because i didn't know about that. If there is anyway of USC Torjan MB who wants to keep in touch, write me. Thanks :)
Awesome.. This Tennesee Vols fan has got class. Unlike most of the LSU Tigers, Texas Longhorns, and Nebraska Cornhuskers fans I've encountered on youtube. They can't spell if their lives depended on it swear like their lives did. Hats off to you. FIGHT ON!!
"Only song they know" does your school have 2 fight songs? Did your band play with Fleetwood Mac and win 2 platinum albums? The reason you (and others) are sick of "Fight On" is because it's played everytime we score. Spirit of Troy....the greatest marching band in the history of the universe!
nothing better than seeing the USC Trojan marching band coming through the streets of Rome echoing that tremendously powerful fight song....Hail Cesar!!!!!! LOL ......USC ROCKS.........FIGHT ON !!!!!!!! :)
If you're talking about Matt Leinart, he went to ARIZONA. He plays for the ARIZONA CARDINALS. They are based in Glendale, Arizona, which is near Phoenix.
Man I am glad I went to USC! We do rule. What can I say? I know that sounds bad, but the truth is the truth. I should have joined the band though! How much fun do they look like they're having!?!?
There is a certain Imperial majesty to the U$C Trojan Marching Band playing at the Colisseum in Rome. But they STILL haven't checked the incongruity of their Roman uniforms and Trojan mascot with their Classics Dept. (if they have one).
I don't think it was ever intended to be anything more than a Hollywood re-creation. Since Troy was destroyed by the Greeks we really don't know much about what real Trojans wore. Most of their motifs are Greek, not Trojan or Roman. But no matter, most of the band just wears the helmet and cape with a traditional band uniform anyway.
They ARE "Hollywood's band"! The original costume for their mascot, "Tommy Trojan", who rides "Traveler, the white Trojan horse at the football games, that original costume came straight from a Hollywood movie set. The band had worn traditional band uniforms with "shakos" hats up until the late 1960s, but the "Tommy Trojan" costume was so very popular in the late 1960s that the band uniforms were then designed to represent something more, well, there were Greek mosaic geometric patterns on the original 1980s band uniforms because, ....closer to the city of Troy? The band uniform has evolved over the years to the current uniform, but, again, who really knows what the real Trojans wore back in the day?
Considering the fact that the US is a continuation/Republic of the Roman Republic, the USC band is bringing it full circle at the Colosseum. Hadrian would be proud.
lol USC is so awesome. Honestly, what other marching band would do this? It probably wasn't even planned. Just like, "Hey, guys, you wanna get up and march down the road? Why? Because we're freakin' USC!!!"
by the way.. I absolutely love this video! I've got this same tune on my cell phone as a ring tone (the actual band playing it!) so I'm never far away from being reminded of SC's TMB! GO SC!
They should get the sc football team down there, have them dominate in the coliseum like they do on the football field. Bring back the old days lol, We Are SC, USC for life.
Don't forget Conquest. You've probably heard that one a lot too! =) Ya know... if you'd stick around till after the games you'd hear another 26 different songs.
This video, kinda takes me back about 2000 years. Notice how even though they are marching away from the camera thiere isn't a problem with their volume. Oh and by the way the only reason i ever watch a college football game is becuase of the USC band. I didn't go to USC i just love the big sound and there attiude.
FAMU? Absolutely--and not enough press. I'm a Trojan fan through and through. Love the Trojan band, but I'm here to second you that FAMU is out of this world. Anyone who gets to see this band, anywhere, anytime should do it!
Damn! This ought to be on History Channel "Man, Moment & Machine!" What a royal kick to see them marching & playing by the Coliseum. If ever one day I win the lottery I'll quit my job... move back down to southern California and march in USC's drumline for the rest of my life! LOL! GO SC!!! WORLDS GREATEST MARCHING BAND!
If they ever work out the details of the proposed "Trojan War rematch" i.e. Michigan State vs. USC men's basketball in Athens, it would be great if the TMB could make it over there.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem written by Virgil in the late 1st century BC (2919 BC) that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who traveled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. Hey Sager122469, go to any university of note, and argue this literary point, if you wish...Fight On!
