I served on the USCGC Campbell WMEC 909, a sister ship to the Thetis. Even after a couple of years in the water I never saw bottom fouling as bad as that. It would be an understatement to question the job the yard did on that job.

I’m most surprised the coast guard don’t have their own ppl for this. Great job!

Thanks! The USCG does have divers... But we do it cheaper and faster. The same applies to the US Navy and USMC.

You have to wonder when she will finally get a session in the dry dock. That paint issue is going to have to be addressed eventually. The biggest problem with pulling her from active service is the fact that those cutters are busy, and there are not enough of them. The Coast Guard has retired its older cutters and has been in the process of replacing them with a brand new, updated class, but in the mean time, all of those afloat are needed in service. I wonder who did the poor paint job, and if the govt. has any recourse to making them do the needed repaint.

Diving on navy bases are the best for "treasure" old brass shells, old coffee mugs, artillery shells, and you name it.

Took her to dry dock in 93 five years after she was commissioned. I don’t remember the hull being that bad

So, a 12" drywall knife is a specialty tool? I kid. I could never do what you guys do.

I know it has been some time since this was posted and it was a cool video. How deed did you have to go and how long does a tank last?
@DeepSouthDivers
@DeepSouthDivers Год назад
At this depth, tanks last about an hour and a 1/2.

We've tested various brands, sizes, and modifications. Eberyome has their favorites. I'm good with any brand so long as it's stainless.

Looks like they might get 10 knots more, right? But wouldn't it be easier to do this in dry dock?
@DeepSouthDivers
@DeepSouthDivers 4 года назад
Nope. First, the boat would have to go someplace that can haul out a 270' boat. Closest government facility that can haul a boat that size is in Virginia... And it's cost more in fuel just to go there than we charged. Then they'd have to come back... To say nothing of the time involved. Then they'd have to dispose of the stuff that comes off of the boat - which would be pricey.
