Use a Gimbal ALL DAY Without Fatigue | Thanos-SE

You can film all day long with your gimbal using the Thano-SE from DF Digital Foto and not get massive arm fatigue. Using a support vest and spring arm with your gimbal is a great way to get smooth gimbal footage, reduce shake and take the weight off of your arms. The Thano-SE is an affordable support fest that can be used with most single grip gimbals like the Ronin RS2, Ronin S, Zhiyun Crane 2S, Crane 3s and more.

What's the longest video shoot you've done with a gimbal? I'll go first--16 hours in one day. This was before I had the support vest and it was very painful, especially cause I did it for 4 days straight....😬

I wouldn’t suggest this vest for any rig over 10lbs despite the manufacturer’s claims of 17lb. I used it for only ONE day using a 15lb rig (BMPCC 6K, RS2, Sigma 18-35) and the geared knob is already wearing out with metal specks shedding off every time it is adjusted. The vertical angle adjusting knob loosens over time and requires constant retightening to keep the rig upright. Stick with the non-tilting type as the Thanos SE has a limited life.

what do you mean non-tilting type?

I bought the Thanos SE a couple of days ago. I‘d say it does it‘s job very well. It moves the weight away from your arms to your back. Which means unfortunately if you have poor back muscles like me you might be sore afterwards in your lower back, if you don‘t pay attention to your posture…but I haven‘t tested it in actual practice yet (I definitely felt it in my lower back after some tests). I like that it doesn‘t restrict my range of movement as much as I thought. You still have a lot of freedom. I found out a small trick as well: you can screw in the gimbal 90° rotated and use the other rotation axis adjustment that isn‘t stepped… then you can still do a smooth pan-up shot with the gimbal. I wish I had the thanos on my last music video shoot, where I had to raise my arms up to film the singers on a 50cm high stage, for 2 hours (5 minute takes).

nice! It's cool to hear about other filmmakers experience with the Thanos--it's not widely popular yet! You're definitely right, it transfers most of the weight to your back and shoulders, so if you do have any chronic back pain--this will effect it. And cool tip, I'm gonna have to try doing that for my pans, cause I always end up just rotating my whole body around to do panning motions.

Hi Patrick . Your post about the Thanos SE interest me a lot . I have it Also and practice with the new DJI RS3 Pro ( with Sirui anamorphic lens , motor follow focus and the LiDAR . This setup is quiet heavy too . But … I try to figure out how to slide the Ronin into it in the good way . It seems for me that I have to twist it to 90 degree if I want it to use it correctly . But I don’t know if I’m right and if it is the good way . If you have any picture of your set up if I can see how you aligne the Ronin with the arm to be sure . Thanks !

Had the CamTree Galaxy vest myself and tried to modify to be used with my Ronin SC a few years back, but I was unable to, and I felt the vest was to big and heavy for me. This Thanos SE looks awesome, but I feel like I would look stupid using it on weddings, and I still feel that I would be more sweaty using this than just using the gimbal without It. for it's price I'd rather buy a gym membership to train my arms, to be stronger :D JK: FOr commercial work I'd really want to have it, but I have little projects of that kind that would need long shooting days.
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 года назад
Oh yeah? Sounds like you've already gone down this path and it wasn't right for your workflow. Idk if you've already seen the video where i did it with the Galaxy vest, but you can get it to work. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qnmSSgLRgtE.html Yeah, at first it always feels a little funny and overkill wearing a support vest of any kind--but you get used to it and embrace the look haha! Might Look overkill for weddings, but totally isn't since you have to film for such long 12+ hours days.

yeah, it works really well! It's $645 USD--so it's not cheap but does cost a lot less than an Easyrig and many other supports systems like the Tilta float and armor man.

Good solution for whole day shots. Are you able to get easily from upright to undersling (while filming)? Ok you answered it anyway, there are limitations.

Hi Chadwin, thanks for the valuable video, got a quick question regarding the adjustable field monitor mount, instead of a monitor, I aim to mount a smart phone in that position so I'm able to view the script anytime. Is that achievable with that mount or if there is any other solutions for that? Thanks man.

One of the best, if not the best reviews out there about that Thanos SE. I have a question though - do you think it is practical to mount a tripod head instead of the gimbal and use it for handheld shoots?)
@djthomasremix9917
@djthomasremix9917 5 месяцев назад
I have tried to put a mini tripod... it becomes very top heavy, unless you add a battery plate to the gimbal, so that you can put the battery at the bottom. I watch another video, the guy mount the brief case mode handle to the vest. And make the gimbal to brief case mode on the vest. That gives me the best result

Just a thought.. I've never tried it but you could possibly use a simple flag holder/carrier (with a strap and cup) and rest the gimbal like you would if you were carrying a flag.. You might need a longer pole for the gimbal but I reckon it could work as a cheaper more affordable option. Let me know what you think?

I have the c3ii and am having trouble adjusting the vest (I keep getting lower back pain) just wondered what your steps are to get vests adjusted properly (the c3 has no documentation). My process is get the shoulders adjusted until the waist straps are horizontal, then tighten both sets. I have not figured out the hip section yet as I cannot seem to get it to support my lower back.

Great video. I just picked this item up today. I'm thinking it may be a faulty model... No matter how loose I make the 2 knobs on the arm, both segments still point upward. I can push them down with some force, but then they pop right back up. Am I doing something wrong, or does it sound like I may have gotten a dud and need to return?

Hi Chadwin. Thanks for your video. I am a professional Steadicam Operator /Owner. I own a GPI Pro Cine Live system - and I use a Steadicam Ultra II vest. I was looking at your video and at 06:13 it looks like your vest is really pulling away from you - in front of the left part of your chest. Also at 06:18 your vest looks really lop-sided.... it's almost riding up your neck on your right side and it's practically on your shoulder (on the right side) - So my question is: Is the fit really that flimsy?
