In this video I want to illustrate why I no longer use just two or three fabrics in my quilts. Have you ever run out of fabric for your quilt and needed to scramble to find more of it? Do you ever wonder why some quilts just look dull or too matchy matchy? Take a look at this video and learn how to add more color to your quilts.

Just found you after watching MANY quilting youtubes over the past year. Thank you so much for this video. It was a game-changer for me. I'm 76 and have been quilting for a year after not sewing since the early 1970's. I've completed 2 quilts, have one waiting to bind, one waiting a border, two UFO's, and ideas for another six quilts. My most recent quilt had the problem of not enough fabric. Three weeks after buying the sashing material at JoAnn's, I cut it out and started putting it together ( it was an I SPY quilt of 5 inch squares around a panel with sashing between squares and rows of squares. After sewing the rows together, I started to attach the rows together and realized I didn't have enough sashing. I went back to JoAnn's (actually I went to four different stores in the same day) to get more. Each store had the same color name from the same manufacturer, but none were the same dye batch, so NONE of them matched. Hence, my first UFO. After watching this video, I'm ready to get it out and finish it with other material. Thank you for the permission to mix materials! Hoping to not make the same mistake again. Also, your leaf quilt was really beautiful. I hope to find a pattern for it on your website! You are very knowledgeable, and encouraging. Looking forward to learning more from you on future youtubes. Keep up the great work!!!

I have become very fond of strip quilts. I use 5-8 “ strips with a21/2 “ strip of black. I use many beautiful fabrics esp the larger prints and florals on black. They go together fast and I have a longarm quilter so they quilt fast and people love them. I get to use some of my hundreds of yards of fabric.

This is a great approach, thank you for sharing. Another option is just sew the cut pieces back together. Its funny that we patch fabric together to make quilts, yet we never think to just join two pieces of the same fabric to make a big enough piece to cut what we need.
@CabinQuilters
@CabinQuilters Год назад
Great option depending on the quilt you are making. If the quilt has lots of points and seams you may not want to do that but otherwise… stitch away. Thanks for watching.

I like your color coordination technique, it makes so much sense to me. I've been collecting fabrics, when I can catch a sale, and have a small collection of monochromatics not really knowing what I'll do with them right away as I am a newbie. And it all began because I can't afford to purchase large amounts of yardage at once. Id like to try your border technique, which will use up a nice amount of my stash. All of the quilts in this video are stunners; thank you for sharing 😊

What I do is bolt my fabric on comic boards, use a 2 x 3 notecard with the name of fabric or line, manufacturer and where I purchased, Yardage amount. Then I clip that card with an alligator clip to my fabric. I've actually found the exact 10+ yr old fabric because I knew the info above. Maybe it won't work in every case but it's great info to have if you decide to try to find the same or another fabric in that line to coordinate with what you have. It works well for batiks as many batiks don't have the selvage info. It seems like it would be hard to do every time you purchase fabric, but if you get into the habit, it just becomes normal practice. Plus, by adding the yardage amounts, when selecting fabric for a project you already know how much is on the bolt. I also subtract any yardage I take on that card so I know what's left.
@CabinQuilters
@CabinQuilters Год назад
Keeping track of the yardage is a great idea. I used to do the same. As a designer, I got out of the practice of doing that as I clip off a few inches here and there. I still do that with batting scraps for baby quilts and tile runners. Thank you for stopping by the channel.

Very nice. The leaf quilt is so pretty. The pieced sashing looks perfect with the leaves because you used the same colors but a longer strip of pieced fabric so it let's you rest on one color and go "ooh and aah" over the next length of color.. And one wouldn't have to overthink because you are using the same colors as in the leaves. I often make something with fabric many years later and we change our mind on the pattern for it. Or it kind of looks dated or we change our taste. I like this kind of controlled scrappy idea.

A quilting friend of mine fell into the trap of "cut your leftover fabric into precut sizes like 2½ inches and 5 inches. So she cut out her quilt pieces, and then she cut everything leftover into two and a half inch strips. And of course the inevitable happened; she made a mistake, and she didn't have enough fabric in big enough pieces to cut another square or whatever it was she needed. And as you said it was older fabric, and she couldn't find it anywhere else. I didn't have anything in my stash, and she couldn't find it online. I don't know if she ever finished that quilt.
