Use of Force
AVA19233VNB1, 1993
This video uses a dramatic recreation of an illegal but peaceful demonstration that gets out of hand to look at the different levels of provocation a police officer might encounter in his or her everyday job and the proper level of force that officers should use.

Good video, pretty short and to the point. They should start playing this for kids before they get to high school. Too many incidents occur because officers are simply doing their jobs and responding as they've been conditioned to respond, and non-law enforcement or military people just don't understand that things they do or say fall into the category of "fighting words" or fighting gestures. There's also a difference between "free speech" and "smart speech." People need to understand that just because you have the freedom of speech and action in this country, doesn't mean that there aren't consequences.

This is an old video. No once carries revolvers any more. But the use of force model is still the gold standard of training.

circlecloud11 What are you talking about? Several of my professors who still are on duty cops and detectives carry a revolver.

Even though revolvers are seen to be "obsolete" nowadays, with the prevalence of semi automatic intermediate cartridge firearms, the revovlers use is not seen anymore, a revolver is a perfect option for an armed security guard, or Non-Patrolling constable who is fixed to stand sentry, it actually might be a better choice as a sidearm, at this time, glocks and semi autos were still used, but mostly for patrolling purposes, in fact, a lot of agencies still use revolvers due to their price, a revolver, when compared to an auto loader is cheaper to manufacture, they also carry heavier loads, which would be ideal for a "one on one" conflict, the only thing a revolver doesn't do well is prolonged combat, where a longgun would be used as an alternative, but you are very correct in saying that the use of force continuum is a gold standard

It's a simple concept: Use the same amount of force the other guy(s) using, to defend yourself. Of course this requires a person to have good judgment which not everyone has.

Gotta love the horrible acting, the God awful late 80's, early 90's outfits, and the hardcore cheesy synthesizer music beats. It reminds me so much of the Beverly Hills Cop movies and the horrible music that they had. Not to say the music today is all that great, but it's so much better than 20 years ago. I just hope that law enforcement training facilities have better and updated videos othe than this crap.

First, they weren't blocking the entrance. It's also unlikely that they aren't allowed to demonstrate on a public sidewallk. LEO's shouldn't open with obvious falsehoods when they try to address these follks.

I WATCHED THIS FROM A LINK THAT MY PROFESSOR PUT ON BLACKBOARD FOR MY CLASS. THE GUY TALKING ABOUT THE MODEL WAS HARD TO UNDERSTAND. AND THE ACTING WAS GODAWFUL. BUT I FOUND IT INTERESTING REGARDLESS. ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHETHER YOUR AN OFFICER OR JUST A REGULAR CIVILIAN.

Citizens don't do this! Law: Police can use NECESSARY force, citizens are not called to control all situations and can only use equal force.
@deusexbaby5555
@deusexbaby5555 4 года назад
Citizens actually can use necessary force. If a robber pulls a knife on you, you can pull a gun on him. Making an arrest however is a more complicated situation than a police making an arrest.

See how the Black guy stayed in the back of the crowd and on the public sidewalk the entire time? Also notice how, as soon as things started going sideways, he crouched down and quickly walked (but didn’t run) away from the scene. That guy understands that the police may have a separate “Use of Force” model reserved just for him, and it has a lot less layers on it than the standard model.

First, that wasn't the point of this video. This video was showcasing all of the levels of force. Second, the agent did a great job and showed empathy towards the protestors and even told them how they should correctly protest. He did not escalate the situation ever and the protestors are at fault.

"It's illegal" Um no. US Constitution states that peaceable assembly and protest is a protected freedom..
@gwencrawford737
@gwencrawford737 7 лет назад
It's a protected freedom, BUT NOT at the EXPENSE of the rights of others. The Supreme Court recognizes a simple, common sense standard... "the rights we enjoy rightly, END where the rights of another person begins." I have a right to call you a fool. I do NOT have a right to block your rightful freedom to travel unimpeded, to get right in your face, and tell you that you're a fool. In this case, the protestors are blocking entry to a building... their presence may be UNDULY intimidating to those who wish to pass to engage in legitimate business in that building. THAT makes their presence THERE, illegal. If they went across the street... or maintained clear access and protested peacefully... (i.e. picket signs rather than militant shouting), so that their presence did NOT interfere with the rights of others... then their presence would be lawful. We should exercise our rights under the Constitution... but we need to always remember and observe the rights of OTHERS as we do that. That's the entire purpose of the Constitution... to ensure EVERYONE'S RIGHTS are upheld and protected.
@carsonp.7009

yes but blocking entrance to a public or government owned building is illegal,

Those lawyers in the black bathrobes (federal judges) have long held that time, place and manner restrictions on the First Amendment are OK with them.
