so is it safe to say that crappie are not normally in a ball and that if i see a ball of "fish" on my side vu, it's likely bait? I have gone out twice now with my 95sv and i notice all sorts of balls of fish. All i have caught were 4-5" perch. I enjoy the videos on the side imaging and down vu. Appreciate the time.
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 2 года назад
Yes typically if you see balls of fish those are bait fish. Crappie can be schooled up tight (especially smaller crappie) but they usually are in a ball.

I'm over in PA and I've only ever caught black crappie using minnows and slip bobbers. I recently picked up some jigs to try and they are very similar to what you used so I was happy to see that. I just upgraded my electronics from the Helix 5 to the Garmin 93sv with Panoptix so I'm headed out today to give them a shot. Thanks for the vid.

Love using 1/4 oz jig. Don’t need a sinker and will tend to catch bigger fish. Can see on the scope very easily.
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 4 года назад
Yes the 1/4 oz jig shows up a lot better than a 1/16oz jig on livescope. If you're trying to get used to livescope I would recommend using a larger jig to easily find it on the screen

Only way I know to communicate; but where would you draw your “triangle” on lake o pines, if you were fishing tomorrow, generally speaking. Seems like that guide had you all in the “highway”, or river bottom
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 4 года назад
my guess the crappie are in post spawn mode on that lake. They most likely will be on the timber next to the creek channels, similar to how we were finding them when I was there last fall.
@bakervinci163
@bakervinci163 4 года назад
Flopping Crappie they were def post spawn . Two weeks ago I fished north of the pines in some Arkansas lakes and they were done . They were on the trees, for the most part. First day i did not keep and stopped counting after 70. Caught a 2.65 white ( pb for me ) and broke off two bigger fish. Day two kept ~19 and on my way out saw millions of crappie at the damn chasing shad. We don’t have #s like that in our lakes. I would not begin to understand how to cast into those schools and think I could compete w live bait. It’s like having 50 decoys in an area where there 100,000 ducks. Rarely works, in my option.
@jonbain9216
@jonbain9216 4 года назад
Got a dumb question How do you determine there crappie ? Without catching them Say running down lake scanning and run accross that how can you tell them from say shad . Thanks
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 4 года назад
I should have made note in the video that I fish this lake a lot.You wouldn't know if the marks are crappie until you catch them. I fish this lake enough to know what the crappie look like on the sonar.
@christopherbrown577
@christopherbrown577 3 года назад
When you see them off to the side like that do you just set up on top of them and vertical jig
@tomwagner2984

As someone new to all this technology, how far was it from the sides of your boat out to where the crappie were at on your side imaging console?
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 4 года назад
well it was a pretty large school. The lighter dots/dashes in the black area on the screen are crappie directly under the boat. The crappie ranged from under the boat to about 40-50 on each side of the boat.

Hey there love the channel and the informative videos you post. I fish lake Guntersville down in Alabama. Man it’s tough because I just started fishing from a boat this year and using a fish finder(Lowrance hook2-7tripleshot) I used to fish bridges prespawn and that was the only time I could catch them but now no matter how hard I try I can’t find them I’m sure it’s post spawn now. Should I just quit till summer patterns set in or where could I begin to look?
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 4 года назад
do you know where they spawn on Guntersville? If so, during the post spawn crappie will move out to deeper water 8-12ft. Look for brush piles, submerged trees, or deeper weed edges. It may take a lot of time scanning with your electronics (be prepared to scan for an hour), but eventually you will see a bunch a bright dots/dashes on your screen near these locations.

Great video. I have a Helix 10 but need to mount it. Down imaging, is it left or right side of boat or both?
@FloppingCrappie
@FloppingCrappie 4 года назад
Down imaging shows mostly directly under your boat similar to 2d sonar. However down imaging tries to show a wider angle left and right of the boat in a 2d style screen.

Hybrids would help that reservoir alot, they can't reproduce and would eat up alot of those small schools of crappies... That lakes has so many crappie they growth is stunted.
