Is it just me, or do the L-Bill crankbait options from Strike King and 6th Sense skew a little too big for most northern waters? To me, 3" for the "junior" size is still just a bit big. The 1.5 size 2 1/2" squarebills seem perfect. I hope the L-Bill crankbaits will eventually come in the "1.5 squarebill" size, and in more bluegill paint patterns.
I think there are times where it’s a bit big, but it does a good job of matching our bluegills up here. I’ve not played with the JR size yet from strike king, but I know guys who prefer that one. I’ve also not tried the Rapala ones, really only throwing them in the spring I’ve just stuck to the ones I’ve had for a few years
Thanks for the Omnia rattletrap recommendation! Just bought six! Great price! Sent them an email too….letting em know, you’re recommending em! I used to promote product and teach technical stuff in the arena of maritime safety….its fun but a tough balance sometimes. I can see the commitment to what you recommend, and what you fish! They’re clearly interchangeable….connected. Those lures show the use! Thanks again. Bill Washington state
Great vid as always! When you talk baits and early spring - can you also include what water temps you are referring to? What baits are better for lower temps versus warmer temps in early spring/ice out. There is a big difference between fishing ice out high 30's water temps vs mid to upper 40s water temps. Thanks Ben!!!!
Thanks! Yeah, for me the baits don’t actually change much based on water temps, but I change my presentation with the lures. The colder the water, I’ll slow down and fish more slow and methodically through high percentage areas; the warmer the water, the more aggressively I can fish. In my first trip this year, I used a lipless in 39° water but rather than ripping it out of the grass, I wormed the lipless along bottom through those same areas
Give me my box of chatterbaits rat l baits and swim jigs drop me in the lake and forget about me. I’ll be fine trust me, for days. I have the L bills your talking about, just haven’t tried them yet. Thanks for the heads up on those.
Great video as always Ben! As much as I hate throwing them from the bank, jerkbaits have been KILLING it on the largemouth in these colder temps we’ve had. Can’t wait for those LSC smallies tho!👊💥🎣
I also like the "original" L-Bill crankbaits, the Rapala Shallow Shad Rap. The bigger size 9 is a pike slayer, but I'd stick with size 5 for bass in cooler water.
Thanks Ben! You always help me see the big picture and put a plan together that produces great results. Btw - thanks for telling me about Lake Erie Lure Works. When I looked them up, I was surprised to learn that they are located only a half hour from me. How ironic? Tight lines and God bless.
