Just bought an '85 H16 about a month ago. I've spent more on repairs/upgrades than I did for the boat. I have $2,.500.00 in it so far. Solid boat and everything is new, not to bad in my opinion. I would of payed more for one in the same condition, this way I have the parts I wanted and i have learned every aspect of the boat

Hello Nice video ! A good way to check an older boat is to lift with the hand one hull from the bow, and look at the other hull how it moves. If both hulls move nearly solid the boat is perfect to race! Best regards

But make sure to check the trampoline tension before. If it is slack, then there is no way it would pass the test. I have seen this hull motion happen on waves on my old h16, checked the pylons, but there was nothing there. I must have been lazy with the tramp. Once tightened, there was nothing moving.

me! I was going to post the same question as I thought there must be others who do so. I posted recently on the Hobie forums about it. Have a look - www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=65600&p=314033#p314033 I troll from mine mostly for tuna, wahoo, mahi mahi and spanish mackerel and and have had great success during the autumn winter here in Okinawa Japan. I normally go out on the Hobie 14 trolling skirted squid lures. Had a great day yesterday with an 8kg bigeye tuna and a mahi mahi. Also check this video from last year where I hooked up to tuna on both rods at the same time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dI9JMxUkpMs.html

I paid quite a bit for my 16 ($7200 Canadian) but it I didn't need to replace anything, not even any of the rigging which I check all the time. It came with everything, EPO's (not 3's but the carbon fiber ones), trailer with Hobie long storage box, beach cart (the duel axle one with the long handle - saw that Wildwind has or used to have one), Harken adjustable main block, and a bunch of spare parts. The only minor issues I had were the downhaul (I upgraded to the 6:1), the trampoline has the course lacing which the gap is pretty wide apart (have to be careful I don't loose things that fall between) and the boat has a bit of a twist when lifting one haul. That would be my question to you Joe. How much far should you be able to lift one haul from the bow before the other one starts raising? There is also some creaking going on. Both hauls are solid btw, no dull spots when tapped on and the posts are solid. Also, is there anything that can tighten play?
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 5 лет назад
That sounds like it was a good deal. If you lift one hull there's always going to be some movement. The creaking is normal. To tighten the boat up the normal procedure is just to tighten the trampoline as much as possible. If there's any space between the pylon and casting you could try putting some thing in the gap to reduce the play.
@HobieCat68
@HobieCat68 5 лет назад
For getting the frame tighter on the pylons and getting a tighter/stiffer boat there are usually two recommended methods. 1. Aluminium shims. Use cut up aluminium beer cans for this. Take the frame off then add strips of the beer cans to the pylon. Easiest way I found is to fold the strip over the lip of the pylon and then replace the frame. Should stiffen things up nicely and it is possible to take the frame off easily enough in the future. 2. Epoxy the frame to the pylons. Drastic in that it is a fairly permanent solution - once they are glued they are on for life more or less so any issues in the future where you'd need to remove the frame would be problematic.
@stevenvachon9745
@stevenvachon9745 5 лет назад
@@HobieCat68 thanks for the tips on improving the rigidity. I break down the boat for winter storage every year so I'll probably go for the shim method. While it's assembled maybe it's a good idea to find the not so tight fitted areas? I imagine that because of the twisting movement, the loser spots would be at the front and back of the posts.

I used to have a Hobie 16. It’s stood the test of a ‘long’ time whilst others have come and gone - a lot of fun. Competed quite a bit incl South Shields, Scotland and Cornwall. (Simon Morgan was a rival). I liked your demo of how many ways to capsize a 16. Done them all! The tip I got when I bought mine was if you see the leeward bow starting to go down, just push the tiller a smidgen (but quickly) and the bow will pop up and save a pitchpole.

Growing up on these,I always wondered if you an rig the Hobies with regular line. Have you tried to rig the whole Hobie with Dyneema? I always wished those steel cables were regular line to take the injury factor away.. Great book is The Complete Riggers Apprentice. I live in Dunedin,Florida. Been sailing Hobies since the 70’s and looking for another to start sailing again. Too shallow for the foil racers. Thanks for the info Sir!! Just subscribed to your channel.

Welcome to the global Joyrider TV community! There are a lot of 16 sailors around in your area who hang out here! I'll be live later today with fitting the 16 trampoline (part 2 of a 5 part series) With regards to the dyneema rigging. I think you're going to get an injury what ever rigging you have on the boat. The 16s from Europe use plastic coated wire for the shrouds which I think gives the best protection. There's a guy in Texas who uses all Dyneema rigging on his Prindle 19 set up by www.colligomarine.com

... that front crossbar needs to be replaced ... PERIOD!!! ... it can not be welded because the aluminum is heat treated !!!! Heat of welding destroys the heat treat/temper and it will not last. Why did it crack??? The dolphin striker was too loose ... allowing the crossbar to flex/bend (common problem on H-18's) ... Did you just say "ropes" ... ??? LINES!!! ... no rope on a boat ... ever!!!!
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 года назад
Yes, thanks for your advise. I've been researching dolphin striker tension as there was no information out there. I foolishly assumed that 'factory setting' of the dolphin striker would be sufficient for the life of the boat. I guess not. We had the cracks welded about 3 years ago - it was either that or replace 7 front beams! Since welding they appear to still be in good shape. And apologies for my poor choice of words, for which, I have no excuse.

My last Hobie 16 was around 1973. Back then anyway there was always a concern about the hook assembly on the base of the mast breaking. Without it, it was almost impossible to raise the mast. Don't imagine the cost being high, but then I never thought or even knew about things like expensive rudder blades. The stock ones always went in the direction I wanted to go.

450 euro for a simple epoxy injection? What are you talking about Joseph :D
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 5 лет назад
I'm talking up to 450 for if you have to pay a boat builder to cut a hole in the boat and reinforce from the inside. Epoch injection could work but i was suggesting how much it could cost - worse case
@85LARGE
@85LARGE 5 лет назад
@@JoyriderTV these boats are not meant to be reinforced from the inside. They are hollow. If delamination is so bad and so spread out that an epoxy injection would not help, the hull is toast and needs to be thrown away. U can gut a hobie 16 only if you have to do a pylon job. There is no other scenario. This is why u see inspection ports on some hobies next to front and back pylons.

Really useful info here Joe. I am glad that you mentioned to take into consideration any extras that the boat may come with that would reflect upon the overall price. When I found my boat, it was a little more expensive than most, but it had a lot of extras like, beach wheels, trailer, cover, wind vane, arriba stick, sail storage tube on the trailer...etc. I didn't mind spending a bit more money for a boat that already had these extras, the beach wheels alone would have cost around 600 US dollars and I knew my wife would fuss about spending so much money on something like that, lol, so I wanted to find a boat that included a few things.
