Thanks for posting this, some great tips there. My 05 has most of which is on the new boats short of the main halyard cam cleat and 5:1 downhaul (I upgraded it). I like that they have the trapeze wire through grommets. Mine go around the frame and so rub grooves in the grips. The initial cost was higher than the others but there really wasn't anything that I had to fix to start sailing. A neighbour got a "free" 16 and was all excited about getting right out on the water. This thing is in really rough shape with all original rigging and super soft hulls. It's late 70's I think. (what a strange main block). I wouldn't sail this thing anywhere where I couldn't swim back to shore.
Just picked up a free 1981 Signature Edition that had been parked in a field since 1996. Hulls are solid and it has a nice galvanized trailer. I figure I can get a new tramp, sails and rigging for about the price of a nice used boat but everything will be brand new.
Good video. Thank you. What’s wrong with an ancient beater if the price is nearly free? A guy in Vancouver let his Hobie Cat 16 get chewed up on the Columbia River rocks. Gave it to me ($150) and a trailer (trailer also needs work). Cross bar assembly, mast, boom, rudders, main sail (# 8519) and gib and lines AOK. I’m repairing the hulls myself (nearly finished). Won’t win any races. HA! If this is something that I like doing then I’ll give this beater away on Craigslist and buy a new HobieCat 16.
I found a guy near me selling his hobie 16 and trailer for $400, the top of the hulls have some cracks and he said there are a lot of soft spots and the trampoline has some holes. Is this a good deal?
Do you want to invest the time and money to rebuild this boat? A better deal can be getting a well cared for Hobie 16 that is in good sailing condition. Then you can spend your time sailing rather than repairing and upgrading. That said, it may be worth the parts, sails and trailer if the trailer is road worthy. But know what you are getting into. If you are not handy, stay away from it and get a boat that is sailable. If you have more time than money and are very handy, the soft spots can be repaired. Check out a hull repair video so you can see if you are up for this type of repair project.
@@JamesDonatelli I mean I figured getting a messed up boat would force me to fix it so in the future I would have the skills in case it broke. Any who the guy magically didn't have a title for it and in Texas it is impossible to register a boat without a title.
