Used Mazda 323 (1999-2003) Reliability | Most Common Problems Faults and Issues 

*Your 323 BJ hatchback (In NA, Protege5 2.0L, 140PS, 4 wheel disc brakes, 5-lug 16" wheels) is a real sweetheart! Continue to show her TLC and she will continually reward you. Larger REAR anti-roll bar and bushings, such as offered by Racing Beat, Anaheim CA removes leans in sharp curves. On the street, OE front bar is fine.* *Rear fender rust tendencies are found only on hatchbacks, not sedans. Replacing tail lamps and hatch rubber seals, injecting flexible acrylic caulking around wheel wells cures this.* *Rear motor mount fails from crashing over speed bumps, intersection drainage dips taken at speed and rough roads. Then the flexible rubber air intake duct tears on underside causing mysterious F/A ratio error DTCs. A basic code reader is your friend here.* *Turbine speed sensor mounted top of ATX case fails at ~100,000 miles. CEL illuminates from DTCs logged and OD not available. Easy no dis-assembly fix is use swivel socket on 1.5 meter extension. Before removing sensor the area around it must be scrupulously air-blasted, spray solvent, toothbrush and Q-tips clean!* *Also, thank you for the nice drive around Region Hradec Králové, Czechia. I still drive mine. Only 130000 km on it. Due to poverty and forced retirement I got new clutch. No new car. Don't regret it. Bear in mind if both hl globes go at same time, light electrics go intermittent and high beam indicator dosnt work. Solved with replacement globes. 40 $ aus.

Had a 2002 1.6l 323 Astina (hatchback) manual for many years. Zero problems. Always reliable. Upgraded to a Mazda 3 hatch in 2017, but funnily enough, even though the 3 is very fun to drive and faster, all the electronics make it sometimes a little too "busy", and I almost wish to jump into the old, simple, 323 again. My wife had a 2001 protege (sedan) 323, same engine and transmission, and it was also bullet proof. She sold that in 2012 to get a family car. The 2017 Mazda 3 I now drive (2.0l, manual) has also been bullet proof so far. Oh, and there was never any rust in either of the 323's, and they were never garaged (Australia).

From 1999 to 2001 there was a 1.5 fuel engine ( 88 hp ) too.
