Good job on your video. I was in a light Infantry unit from 1989 - 1995. Most of us in the infantry platoon bought old 1956 model canvas buttpacks and carried them on our LBE. They were not standard issue, but almost everyone used them. Most had their gear rigged so that you would unbuckle the belt and let the buttpack and canteens drop lower in the back when moving with the rucksack on to allow the kidney pad of the ruck against your back.
I was in the Marine Infantry from 97 till 01. We were still issued all ALICE gear, including the buttpack. We were issued the buttpack from SOI all the way to Fleet Marine Force. Didn't start getting the MOLLE gear till just before deployment to Iraq. As far as field packs, they issued us the CFP 90 and the medium ALICE pack.
I was an 03 in 2nd FAST from 01-05 we eventually got rid of that old stuff several years after 9-11. The old mag pouches sucked, the old flak jackets sucked and I especially hated those aligator clips, I used overlapping varients of the ALICE stuff from the 90s, most of our stuff was just like the first 94 Ass Pack in the video. I never got issued the regular newer stuff, in FAST we had both flak jackets and 2nd chance vests at first, than we had FISBE vests with the cable system that comes apart when you pull a strap (uncase you are drowing) and the gear that came with it, than we had some other shit, Interceptor? Maybe? Than I got out and got in the Army amd had whatever they used but I was a POG. If its not combat I rather run with a Molle Battle belt and H harness with a Molle Ass Pack with the USMC FSBE canteen pouches with 2 canteens. I travel the country and stay outside alot so Im trying to develop a light belt kit to supliment my pack by not something too big like a whole gun belt.
These are great videos man. A lot of this info is scattered and condensing it into videos with examples of each variant is amazing, thank you for taking the time to do this.
You're like one of the only guys on RU-vid who produces such concise and informative videos on collecting USGI cold war era kit. I love it and it's very interesting! I hope you never get bored of it haha! A sidenote though, these nylon "Field Pack, Training" OD buttpacks are selling for stupid expensive prices on Ebay, Etsy, etc. How much did you usually find yours? Any idea why they're now so uncommonly expensive and why everyone and their grandma randomly wants a mil-surp OD buttpack from the 1980s??
nice video man...I have all that crap too (and more...much more) I use all that stuff in the bush. They are all usefull, the thing I dont like is the canvas m1956, if it get wet the weight just doubles. Other than that I love all my gear. take care bro.
So why did the Vietnam rubber liners last so long? I have one from 62 and it’s mint. I have another with very heavy use and it’s still intact for the most part.
I've been looking, mostly on Ebay but also on some dedicated surplus stores, for an OD green nylon ALICE butt pack, without success. Only ones I can find are the field training packs in M81 woodland.
Yeah, right now this seems to be the cheapest ALICE buttpack on ebay. I thinks made in the US but not military issue though. www.ebay.com/itm/234824681612?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=bXE9bBk4Qlq&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=nZlbx6wISqS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
@@collectornick4270 Nice find, thanks. I scrolled for over an hour last night and failed to find a listing. Unfortunately that one doesn't ship to the UK where I am.
@@collectornick4270 What buttpack(s) would be era-appropriate for a 1980s US impression? The ALICE and M1967 of course, but what about the '61 or '56? Were they still in use with the infantry at that time?
that's leftover from a WW1 system ... hard non bendable hooks are placed in the holes to attach anything you want or anything you can improvise ... metal eyelets are all over the pistol belts and alice systems ...
I have an old M1961 butt pack in canvas, water proof liner is in good shape. It has the eyelets for attaching to the H harness, and eyslets on the cover, top. But no eyelets on the side webbing, is this normal? You kinda breezed over the M1961 pack you have.
I wonder if you can use the little straps below the keepers to go over suspenders like the M1967 Buttpack? I bought a 90’s buttpack so Ill see unless you already could confirm
@@collectornick4270pfft efficiency, whats funny is I took a M81 training pack and managed to slide the M1967 suspenders through the belt keeper slots on it lol, works "just as good"
I don’t know if this is rare or anything but my M-1956 Buttpack (it has a stamp inside) but it has a rubber liner, is that rare or was it changed. Great job 👍
I've seen some like that, where it's a M-1961 butt pack but the stamp labels it as a M-1956. I don't thing those are rare but just means their early made and the just re-used the old stamps until they replaced them.
It's funny you ask this because I reached out to a couple of them a few days ago and they seem to think that they have m1967 but packs but they're just the Alice ones worth like $40 tops. A prime example of uneducated eBay sellers asking crackhead prices.
I have an od nylon one that has a woodland camo liner. Any idea if its legit or not? Posted it on Facebook and have gotten different answers. Some say its a commercial copy others say its original. Feels and looks just like my brothers original with the od lining.
@@claymorelessbag3042 Those alligator clips sucked ass! They were a damn liability, that's why anyone who really used their gear had to tie it down with 550 cord and not rely on alligator clips. And the LBVs and flack jackets of the 782 gear were in no way better than the newer vests. USMC/US Army, 2nd FAST 8152/0311 4ID 25U 2001-2008
i attached 6 buttpacks to my large alice back pack to go shopping at walmart ... i try to keep it at about 80 pounds ... some people freak when i walk by ...
@@stopmotionboy1085 here's a legit one but way too much imo, can't believe someone is paying $75 for a not even complete 90s butt pack. www.ebay.com/itm/274438839874
@@collectornick4270 I'll gladly pay the money for it. If i could just find them lol. Only like 2 up on ebay rn. Want me whole kit to be OD versus the woodland one i have currently. You got one you're willing to part ways with?
the Alice ones are crappy, very poorly made, I have a new unissued one on an Alice set up and it has a rip in the bottom. It's never been used.I think the improved one is better, and certainly the m 56 is a world better. Compared to British PLCE Alice isnt h that durable.
