I've been wanting to make a non-marring plastic mallet for quite a while and I finally got around to making one. I used a quick setting plastic resin that I have used before. This stuff is pretty awesome it sets in about 10 minutes and it machines really well on the lathe. I had previously made a smaller version that I use as a sort of plenishing hammer to shape thin metal so I know it is possible but I wanted to make a larger heavier version to use for assembling wood. I was surprised at how tough the plastic is once it sets especially since it sets in 10 minutes. I used silver maple for the handle which turned out okay the fitment between the hammer head and the wood was a little looser than I would have liked but luckily the epoxy fills up any void fairly well. Once the epoxy set it felt really solid I suppose time will tell if it comes loose and if it does well I'll just make another one.
