A couple of things, but first, it’s great to see a Rockstead in use. My two live in my EDC rotation, so have got a lot of use over the last year and a half. First, those are not scratches in the steel. It has a titanium nitride coating. The scratches are it it. It can be buffed, but there is a good chance that your strop is doing much of the damage. My second point is that Rockstead recommend a denim strop, impregnated with metal polish. This is because, in the traditional Japanese style, you polish it sharp with the softest and finest of abrasives, not diamond compounds. Go on to their website and they will sort of explain.

@@tomahawkwarrior Yes, maybe a $15 Home Depot blade probably can slice up drywall pretty efficiently, but does it have that beautiful handle, superior action, and mirror finish? No. I get it, it is an expensive knife, but it is like a piece of artwork. Same philosophy, I run errands in a Toyota, but if I had the disposable income for it, I'd love to pull up in the Walmart for my groceries in a Lambo.

Stropping a full mirror finished US$1000 knife - you're braver than me. While I love expensive knives, Rocksteads seem to cross a line from expensive to ridiculous - but I get it. The time involved to hand make these knives = $$$. Another interesting vid - thanks.

I agree but it is one knife I can definitely see the price in. Outside full made by hand customs. Production knives are getting so good I think staying around $400 at the high end gets you almost anything you could ever want.

I watched DBK smash around a Rockstead yesterday. They had the £3,000 ones in their pockets and beat up one worth £1,500. If I owned one, it would cut a thing. It would be admired and put away. Those numbers translate to $4,600AUS roughly.

@@Quagmire925, yeah mate, as of yesterday. Restrictions have eased but aren’t completely gone. Our shops are still closed but we can travel more than 15kms and don’t have to be inside by 9pm….the road to nowhere.

The edge reminds me of a katana, there's no mini edge like most knives. How it's sharpen is essentially you have to re polish the whole edge again if you want a uniform even edge and polish. Takes a lot of work...

Totally get that. I recently bought the CHI…then proceeded to buy white cotton gloves that coin collectors use. I don the gloves, take it out of its box, drool for several minutes, cut up a sheet of PBP, admire it some more, then put it back in its box. It’s like an addiction; I’ve got a shirogorov, grimsmo, sebenzas, etc. - all sharpened with a WE130 to split hair, but nothing comes close to the CHI…all I want now is that Higo in ironwood!

Brilliant content! I’ve never seen an edge underneath a microscope! I recently acquired two a antique camping knives that have a very interesting grind. They are both full flat grind, but only have an edge bevel on the palm-side of the blade if you hold it right-handed. That makes the grind a hybrid of full flat, chisel and Scandi. As brain dead simple as it is, the cutting performance is noticeably different. It slices well, but also has the positive feedback of a strong edge that doesn’t feel like it’s under stress when I cut harder materials. And for woodcarving, it makes the most precise shaving cuts of any knife I own! The only trouble is, when it comes time to resharpen them, I don’t know how to preserve the edge on both sides without sharpening both sides, which would kill the zero-edge effect it has now. What do you recommend I do?

Yeah chisel grinds cut very well while allowing the knife to be on the thicker side, I sometimes sharpen knives similar to a chisel, with one big bevel and a small one in the other side for knives with bad geometry, it makes the cut far better

Awesome knife, keeping a convex edge going definately takes a little more work but the benefit is great. Mind you mirror polishing that knife back to original is going to take some time have fun man. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

I might just break down and get one. I haven’t really been happy with the 200-300 dollar knives. I’ve had to return them for various problems. It’s crazy that we live in a time where people are selling literal junk for 200-300 bucks.

The cardboard was very rough on the knife. The video seems to prove that the knife is overrated and over priced. But there is still something really cool about Rockstead knives. I’m not hard on my knives. Mine would never cut cardboard. It’s interesting seeing how much damage it does to the knife edge. Thank you

I have a Buck 120 that I’ve had for years and I’ve never been game to sharpen it. I also got the Ken Onion sharpening tool and been practising on paring knives in the kitchen. I also got the extra stropping belt and this special Flitz paste which came highly recommended. So I’ll sharpen some other practice fixed blades first.

I can not say it'll work for your knives, but raising the angle to about 50-60° on a sharpening steel has worked on some of my knives. I saw something recently on it, which it removes something. It almost felt as others watching my method and publicizing it, 😉. It's as if there's a very fine wire like something in the edge. I mention as it may help. As some steels can flex at the edge and the flex at the finest level needs to come off.

Ohh that’s my damn dream knife brother, I have always been in total love with the things you have the one I would actually get first if I had the coin free no pocket clip sweet that’s one thing that they have never give a monkeys about the pocket clip,they are all about that fecking beautiful blade the things are off the chart🤤when I sit and think about all the knives I got that are from £30-80 the average being £100-180 with about 16 hitting the £360-560. I could of had three of these and still had a good collection as well 🧠💨 this proves that when it comes to knives or anything you really love you just can’t help yourself (well I can’t) even if the Bank account looks about as healthy as a meth head after a hit of bleach and cats piss just to try and spot the pain of a 3 week outage 😂😂. I know some people and most people use that Clip and claim it as a Pocket Clip but it's called a Pocket Knife for a reason to be in your pocket not clipped. That Clip allows everyone to see it and in this World these days alot of Pussies will say OMG he's got a Knife. So I use that Clip as a Money Clip. Yes I always carry a little Cash and Clip my money with that Money Clip not a Pocket Clip and keep it down in my pocket whare a Knife goes and is supposed to be not clipped to your pocket for everyone to notice and some Puss to say OMG he's carrying a knife. It's a Money Clip. But that's just my opinion and thought. I think it makes since. I went to a Bar with my friends once and they had their Knife clipped and the Bouncer said no knives allowed let me hold your knife to you leave . Later when we were buzzed and leaving my friends forgot his Knife but I still had mine because it was in my pocket out of sight. Be wize keep your Knife down in your pocket and use that Clip for money Partner.

Convex ground knives are the shit. Love the grind lines, the two-tone finish (looks great in the hand) slick sticker. Personally do not like the in-line lock. After owning several Benchmade folders, I find it difficult to match the axis lock system for a few reasons. (Just personal preference)

what is the difference in blades between the $1000 Rock and the $3000? As far as sharpness,obviously length and shape will be different but i think blade steel is the same

Most likely nothing in sharpness the geometry will be different between models but they do the same process with most of them, they have some with a regular edge bevel as well

Why do people always confuse stripping with sharpening. Stripping doesn’t sharpen it. It re aligns / straightens the blade. It doesn’t sharpen it

i worked as a chrf for 10 years my knifes all together where 1000 dollars i could never spend 1000 on a knife no matter how much i had but look into not cutting cardboard with any knife that is fastest way to destroy the edge of your knifes and never use hot water on them but you do what you want buddy

My knives have edges to cut, cardboard yes dulls your edge but hardly destroys them, especially when using good quality steels, and when you know how to sharpen and hone Sharpening is a normal thing, I don't have over a 100 knives to avoid cutting things that's what they are for.

For that knife I'd use .5 micron or 50,000 grit diamond compound. It would work fairly quickly. You can buy the .25 micron, 100,000 grit compound, but for those compounds I would use a thick suede leather.

Yeah I've got many different kinds of leather, they recommend using denim, so I'm going to try and get the lowest micron available plus with the denim in wood

@@NeevesKnives I use a mahogany wood for stropping edges, but for that big convex mirror polish I'd use some thick suede I have, it's more a nubuck leather than a suede, a really tight knit. By all means though use what you have. Diamond compounds is how I do mirror polishes. Adds double to the price. You ought to see a wavy polish I do using a cross travel x-y table.

I know knives are tools meant to be used but I cringed. Try some Flitz polish to get rid of the swirls on the mirror polish.

A rotary sander with a pack of canadian disks 280 - 500 grit on a VSR drill. High grade sharpening steel .. leather strop... time for surgery in one minute flat. Period about ..$6 for the rotary polisher sand disk rubber thingy $ 15 for the sandpaper disk $79 for a top grade sharpening steel.. I use my shoe for leather ... or even a high speed jewelry polisher and rouge for a mirror finish.. buck knives wont sharpen.. Schrader LB7 and I can resection yer gut or whatever... Puma and Buck metals are too hard too sharpen on stones... and dont last any longer...

I sharpen everything on stones, diamond stones, unless it's simple steels like the ones you mentioned but most of the steels I sharpen are high grade steels like maxamet, cruwear, k390, m390, exc...

The entire convexed grind is the edge bevel, like a zero grind

This was the actual video the others were just cuts from it. I'm trying to test out using shorts so I can start doing them but since I've never used it it's a learning process so I used a Clip from thus video, in reality I used it to call out metal complex on Instagram 😆

Bit steep for a knife, and for what abuse I give mine I always go with a Swiss army and if I need something wicked sharp I use one of my opinel 5,6 or 8.
