We used a $90,000 laser scanner to scan my Cruzer and Super Duty airplanes. Why? Because now we can offer all of the fairings I made for the Cruzer and SD on the KitplaneEnthusiast.com website for all of you.
These fairings will look great on your airplane and surely get you a 100kts or more in extra speed!

The whole video when the scanner was sitting on the table and was screaming at the screen, "Lay that thing down!" so it does get knocked off the table!

First came across laser scanning back in 2008. Utterly blew my mind as a professional aircraft designer using Dassault Systems “CATIA” software to create aircraft surfaces. A lot of work was required to smooth out the point cloud created back then but 15 years on, all of that appears to be done in real time and the resulting tolerance is mind boggling ( 😮 9/10,000 th of an inch). Thanks for posting 🙏 … truly amazing stuff to see it being applied practically in experimental & LSA in 2023 👏

Interesting how the scanner works I would think a finished product would save a lot of hours.Just for your information I have never met Mike and am not related even though we are both Mullets.

@@KitplaneEnthusiast You have enough credit to charge reasonably for building lessons as well as build assist capability. 🙂

Does it scan transparent parts like the windshield also?

How about sharing the scans of the Cruzer with Horizon Hobby so they can sell RC models of it.

How long do you think it will be before you have them for sale?

We should have the upper windshield fairings and the wing fairings for the cruzer at the Zenith fly-in.

That would have been fascinating to watch while they did their thing. Amazing.

too bad there was no Stol there, so they could scan for a faring under the horizontal, to close the big open area.

Actually Mark Seaver is planning to extend the STOL aft fairing to go all the way back and close that gap.

The faa should scan all aircraft before certification... Would be a great idea for Data vi long haul...

Scanning every new aircraft to see if it deviates from some sort of master scan might be helpful to the manufacturer, but I do NOT think the FAA or any other government entity should be involved. As far as I know, manufacturers of Part 121 aircraft already use lasers during construction (alignment / positioning) which probably serves much of the same purpose. The practice of laser (image) scanning an entire aircraft may lead to new discoveries during post construction QA. I would like to think that the major builders already do it. Side Note ... For a while, Lufthansa was trying to rebuild a Super Connie at a local airport. An article in the local paper said that they used lasers every morning.

@@Sometungsten I disagree. If AI were allowed to examine every image against one another, it could find my new discrepancies like wire run through the aircraft or other factors densities of metal you name it temperatures at which it was assembled. Could indicate preposition for multiples of factors to take place. Good or bad but that is why I call it data. B
