Hi Lisa, nothing you do needs to change. You're right that comparison is the thief of joy. I would also say that some people find joy in the product, when I watch you I see the joy in the journey. I see your love of the craft and the art and when you celebrate a finished object it's so much more special because I know the joy of the journey really spurred you on. Our society puts almost too much value on the product that sometimes we gloss over the process of Making, the thoughtfulness and intention we have with our crafting. The work that goes into it just to make an item. We need more people like you who talk about the process, who show the steps, and share the knowledge. It's one thing to have a pile of products to be inspired by, but I truly enjoy to come here and experience the joy of making. You and your channel are an inspiration because you are never rushing after a finished product, you do what brings you joy in the moment and you share that. That's the magic here.

I thought we’d hear about all the snow in Chicago that we’ve been hearing about! Lol Another Lovely video and I appreciate you explaining the time it takes for artists to create the rolags (and other things). It’s kinda sad to hear someone saying “why does it cost so much??” As if the maker’s time is not worth much. I often have relatives telling me I should sell my work but I know that many folks expect prices to reflect sweatshop labor and cheap materials and so I don’t even entertain the idea. I gift my items only.

Hi Lisa, I love your podcast. As for comparisons, that’s a great quote and message. Don’t forget, too, most knitters are not knitting their own handspun! That’s a whole second hobby! and even among hand spinners, working with raw wool is another layer! Furthermore, to add to what you already say about comparisons, some people have more time on their hands than others, and some of the most productive knitters are stress knitters using it to cope, so all that productivity may have a story of a stressful life involved. we cannot judge ourselves up against other people, because no one person goes through what another goes through. thank you for sharing exactly what you bring! I’m only 5 minutes in, heres to the rest of the podcast!

I was thinking about your point „how much, many knitting projects in 2023” as I found these episodes… well, while it’s good to have an orientation for tracking knitting projects, it doesn’t really matter. It’s not a competition. Unless a person is knitting for a living, the amount of knitting is personal. No one should be overwhelmed by other people knitting but should be inspired. I have feeling, a new episode is brewing, I saw finished Felix on Insta

Love your show Lisa. I love your socks, I also am a fan of Stone Knits, having knit some of her patterns (the mushroom ones are cute too). I applaud you for doing all that work in the black yarn - it's tough to knit with black. The Welsh fibre sounds lovely. Thanks also for the blending board segment. I love my blending board too. You're right about the quote from Theodore Roosevelt about comparison. I think that's true in every aspect of comparison - do I complete enough projects, did I pick the right colours, is my hair too curly, or am I too fat or thin? I think this is why reason why I don't take part in makealongs. I don't like the pressure of having to complete something in a given period. I think I'm as much of a process maker as a project maker and I enjoy the doing as well as the finished product. Anyway, thanks for a relaxing, interesting, and thought-provoking show. Don't change a thing - you are one of the first podcasts I pick to watch when I see that there is a new one among my subscriptions. Love it. Keep doing what you do.

Thank you for continuing soulful spinning. I’m glad that old episodes stay on RU-vid to revisit them. So this must be serendipity! Last year I discovered LantenMoon Ebony needles and own EXACTLY the same set in identical cover. Yes I knitted bamboo, don’s and straight and circular. They are ok most of the time, but smaller sizes bend and I cannot stand that. One of my dpn bamboo broke, but lantern Moon … I lost 3, they break in a weird way, on diagonal. I still use them but I’m very conscious and observe so I don’t break another one. The true also is that all my life I had used steel, aluminum, plastic and coated (like Prym) German needles and those are hard to break. I also discovered Ginger needles by Knitters Pride. They are as good as Ebony but 3 times less expensive. My friend, mentioned Addi needles, but I have not tried them.

Yours is one of my favorite wool/spinning/fiber arts channels, and I love to put it on while I'm settling in with my wheel, or sorting locks in a fleece. I've even gone back and watched previous videos over again, just to have the inspiration of the wonderful colors and fibers you show, and the feeling of comraderie! Regarding the discrepancy in the number of stitches you picked up from your provisional cast on, I think I can explain! When you cast on 65 stitches, then later undo the provisional cast on and pick up those stitches, you're actually picking up the bars *between* those original cast on stitches (since you're now knitting in the opposite direction, so you're half a stitch offset). So you end up with an off-by-one error: since you had 65 stitches, there are only 64 bars between them for you to pick up now. So you didn't make any mistakes in the process! (As a fellow math teacher, I always have a little moment of mixed annoyance and delight when I encounter a fence-versus-post problem like this in real life.)

I love your little sidenote about raglan being named after a person. It actually was. it was invented around the time of the battle of waterloo for Lord Raglan, who lost his arm in battle. it was apparently to make it easier for him to dress himself due to the better ease of movement in raglan sleeves over other contemporary to the time sleeves.

I have to agree with everyone else, do not compare yourself with anyone else. You're unique and wonderful. While the quote is not from the Bible, the wisdom behind it is. In Galatians 6:4 it says "But let each one examine his own actions, and then he will have cause for rejoicing in regard to himself alone, and not in comparison with the other person." Just keep striving to improve, because that's what you love, and don't worry about anything else. ❤

Thank you for sharing that quote! It’s really the only way to live but it is so hard to do sometimes. We are all works in progress succeeding at times and sometimes stumbling. Take good care. 🥰

Love your podcast so much ! I would start knitting the pink colour in so it doesn’t do too much of a contrast of two separate colour…

You can store your handspun yarn by inserting the tip of the spindle into a drinking straw and push the yarn over

I’ve never seen a drop spindle used like that before. Brilliant ❤️

I would hold off and use the pink on the second triangle so when worn the darker earth tones will make it look like spring flowers on top.... a fellow spinner

So good to hear from you, Ivana. I’ve been thinking a lot about color with all the seasonal analysis talk these days. I feel some colors evoke strong feelings and joy. I hope you are well and hope to see you soon in your channel. 😘

Lisa, so nice to see your RU-vid notification! Last year I did a spindle spin with Southdown for socks, along with some lace weight Mohair to hold double for the heels and ball of foot/toe - then dyed them with some naturals (onion skin, avocado, etc). They fit so well and are so warm! I also had fun with my (DIY) blending board, making mini batts (instead of making the rolags) for a gift exchange at my fiber arts guild party. I love your peony concept! and such a lovely spin 🌺 What is the difference between crystalina, angelina and firestar?

Spindle spun Southdown and a strand of mohair gives the best of both worlds nice and springy but also strong. Making batts in the blending board is a great idea and was much appreciated I am sure. I looked up the sparkle and found this really cute video that explains the difference. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w6VbeOMjil0.htmlsi=oE6-Yi9uF6kXIKFL

Another wonderful video! The felix sweater turned out gorgeous! And nice job on working the stubborn areas first, then moving to the sleeve island. 🙂 I've been eyeing up a blending board, maybe this year.....and you make spinning rolags look so easy. I don't know if I predraft as much as you do, so next time I'll draft more. Look forward to seeing you next week. Until then....

I don’t usually pre draft other preps but those blending board rolls can be a bit stubborn. I am also going to experiment with rolling them with bigger dowels and not so tightly! Thanks for the compliment on my Felix!

What a special podcast. I love that you showed the supported spindle spinning of the puni/rolags. Your hands were sooo graceful. I kept thinking it was like watching a ballet. And I wanted to see the yarn that this fiber made, too. Glad you showed us that. But one question: why don’t the rolags you showed us qualify as real rolags? What was different about them? I’m learn8ng about spinning and don’t know much about rolags.
@SoulfulSpinning
@SoulfulSpinning 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! Traditional rolags are made with wool on hand cards with lots of air incorporated.

Happy new year. You know your viewers well; I had just composed a comment in my head complimenting you on your rolag making and piano playing, when up popped your disclaimer!! I still think your rolags are fab, as are all your crafty endeavours. I think I am ready to step into the world of spinning wheels and, if you have the time, I would appreciate your thoughts on the good points (and not so good, if there are any) of any wheels which have come your way. If you could only have one wheel, which one do you think you would plump for? At the moment I am leaning towards the Lendrum DT but who knows where I’ll end up? Best wishes, J
