We look at this useful filter that can be used to test a variety of coloured gems and why it became less effective at testing Emeralds. And we look at questions about Emeralds in terms of chromium, vanadium and iron being responsible for beryl being green and what makes green beryl an emerald?

Yep, im a GIA Gemmologist, and the GIA, only reconize like an emerald, if have saturation of crome. If the emerald is of VANADIUM they put a note in the certificate, like a vanadium green beryl. The so-called "zambian emeralds", in fact are not emeralds, because have re-constituited treatment, and GIA does not call gem, a re-.constituited gemstone. Too in the case of the "Glass filled ruby" in fact, are not ruby, because are reconstituited, and loose the gem value. Great speech friend!!! im understand u at the perfection.

So, why did GIA recognized a lot of rich green beryls as emeralds, since 1963?! And their site tells Zambian rich green beryls are emeralds. It is in their posts and so on. They should disclose that for the public, according to what you are telling us.

You mentioned white light, but, i saw a warm color light. Also, i used the sun's light against an emerald and it showed a red color. I used the same emerald with an LED white light and it came out as green/yellow...

Great video. A chelsea filter demo and a history of Emerald controvesy, catching even a newbie like me up to speed in 10 minutes! Thank you! One question for you; I have heard that there is in addition to a Chelsea filter, a filter made primarily for Ruby and that it turns red ruby blue when being viewed. Have you used one, does it work? I would think that it would make sorting ruby from imitations quicker. Thanks for your help.

Thanks mate. Very informative. I am not seeing the contrast with the synthetic Alexandrite. Many of my lab collection gems are not so brilliant however the ruby vs garnet is working. Regarding the light source it is the refraction of a bright source ?? not underneath ??

Thank you so much for this video, it has really helped me. I was just looking for more information about the filter and came across this video. I happened to be wondering how I can pick the Aqua from the blue topaz in my parcel and I got the answer here, two birds with one stone!
