I show my handmade edge plow, how I made it, and I show it in action.
You can see the books I am making on my etsy shop: iartbooks.etsy.com
An edge plow (or plough over the pond) is a tool used to get that nice clean edge on the book. The edge plow is normally upwards of $100-200. I made mine out of a $5 tool.
Many people use hydraulic guillotines to trim their edge, but I like using the elbow grease method.

Clever idea. A $5 tool and a little elbow grease replaces a much more expensive alternative, and gets the same result.

I love the idea of a chisel! I'm using a plane iron at the moment, but there's no handle. Something you might find helpful is to place a piece of stiff cardboard at the back of the book you're planing. The last few pages tend to bend rather than get cut - the cardboard just keeps them upright and you can cut a little into the cardboard without bending the last couple of pages.

I'm watching the video and thinking the same thing about the cardboard

He mentions that he places the block between wood two boards, the back board higher than the front thus avoiding bent or rough cuts on the last pages.. Duh

Hello Jesse. I have been using a chisel to straighten the edges of my wife's notepads and it had never occured to me to round the edge of the tool like that. I will be rounding the edge of the chisel that I use (also an old chisel) this evening. Thanks for sharing. Your books are very nice!

oh man this is beautiful. seriously. if i had any of these tools my experience would have been so much easier! haha as it is i have knees instead of a clamp. two books and my arse instead of a book press, a paint scraper instead of a skiving knife. OMG i do make things difficult for myself. just getting to the casing in stage of my first book!

Hi, I like that you make your own kit. Trimming is the bookbinding skill I need to improve the most. Can I ask how you ensure that the book block is set in your press with the spine parallel to the guide block on which the chisel rests?

I'm wondering if a leather worker's head-knife would work. Semi-circular blade, single edge bevel, longer cutting edge.
@MrJessebo
@MrJessebo 4 года назад
That sounds like the perfect edge for this. Let me know how or works!

Método impresiso y muy desprolijo... Es mejor usar una buena cizalla. Cualquier alteración del ángulo en la mano cambia el corte y hace desastres en los bordes del papel. Es un recurso para muy pocas páginas.

Great idea! I Actually was considering selling a blade like this...it's an old idea. I would suggest that the part the blade rests on be wider, like 1-1/2" wide, so there isn't any chance of the blade tilting. Tilt and cut once and you start cutting uphill. For those who don't want to make their own, I build hand binding equipment for sale and make a plough that does what he is showing here, plus the press to use it on. affordablebindingequipment.com

AffordBindEquipment You look like you make surprisingly beautiful items. At this stage I'm more concerned with cost than setup quality, but impressive work.
