On today's Tech, No Babel: Using a live video production switcher
If you don't know what they all do, looking at a live video switcher can boverwhelming. Let's face it, it looks like if you hit the wrong button, the Death Star will blow up Alderann. (There's a reason for that. The controls of the Death Star in Star Wars were just a repurposed video switcher.)
[tweet "With all its buttons, a live video production switcher can seem overwhelming, here's how to use it:"]
At its most basic, a switcher switches between video sources. So, you'd expect a button for each video source. Those buttons are grouped into buses.
The first is the preview bus. Hit a button there and you're telling the switcher which video source you're planning on transitioning to.
The second bus is the program bus. This shows what's currently being sent to the output. If you need to, you can tap any button on the program bus and instantly switch to the that source.
Finally, we have the ME (or mix/effect) bus. This set of buttons tells the switcher what source should be used for keys (and other effects) placed on top of (or downstream) of the program bus.
To transition between the preview and program bus, you have three options. You can use the cut or autotrans buttons or the t-bar. Typically, you'll use the cut button, since the cut is the most common transition.
The autotrans button and the t-bar do all other transitions. The autotrans button does the transition at a predetermined rate, in the case of our switcher at my church, that's 20 frames. The t-bar can be faster or slower, depending on the rate at which it's moved.
While not done a lot anymore, you can stop the transition in the middle by pausing with the t-bar.
Finally, we have the keyers. There are three common types of keys. Chromakey is the kind that meteorologists use when they stand in front of a green wall and the switcher removes the green and replaces it with a weather map.
A luma key removes either black or white, but depending on your switcher, fine shades of each may or may not be affected.
Finally, there's an alpha channel. An alpha channel is another set of information that tells the switcher exactly what should be removed and in what amounts, so you can have both transparency and translucency.
Like the transition section, the keyers can cut or autotrans in and out.

I appreciate how you didn't quickly scheme through things but explained each element briefly but thoroughly. We use a software version of the switcher in our church so it was nice getting further insight about what all the other buttons are about. I would definitely appreciate having a button to press and know I pressed it, considering all the times I thought I had clicked on the key to overlay lyrics only to realise that we skipped a couple of lines of the new song.

Thanks for the video - I'd just like to have seen what came out of your Program or Preset bus when you were doing the transitions or effects

Really good video. Would like more of a full close up on the board as you are explaining. The position of the camera for the close up of the board would have been better from an overhead shot. Otherwise. Very good.

Next time I do one on a video switcher, I'll keep that in mind.

Thank you Paul. Do you have any other videos that go more into depth on using the ME or Mx Bus and adding graphics, lower thirds, etc.?

Thanks man ahd to learn about these thuing cuz i of my study course... Hope to one day master working with these things... Would this also sufice for live Streaming events with multiple DSLR's Or does it requier TV Production type Cameras? Thanks alot anyway very helpful
@PaulClifford

It depends on the switcher. The BlackMagic Design ones, for example, can often take cameras without genlock, but they need to be a standard resolution and frame rate. Not all DSLRs can output that AND often output the overlays, too (the text on the screen which tells you about the recording).

First of al Great video man ! but I had a couple of questions though , I'm a student atm and I run a show for the school which has turned out a lot better than any year before and I was wondering if you can do specific small tutorials on things like setting macros or a chroma key or an extremely detailed video on how to set any kind of special effect , I know a few including the chroma key but there are other people/students like myself that would like to see the way you do it such as a preffered/easier way. Thanks!
@PaulClifford

How you do it depends on the particular switcher. Which one do you use?

Hi Paul, Thanks for the very informative video. I am a cameraman/video switcher for my church and use a similar switcher. We have recently started live streaming our Sunday services. It's very exciting! I operate the switcher once or twice per month when not on camera. We use 4-6 stationary cameras. Unfortunately, I don't get a lot of practice calling camera shots. Is there any training you know of where as a Video Switcher I can improve my skills at deciding camera shots and communication to the camera operators? Thanks for all you do. God bless.. Jerry

Great info Paul. I was wondering what brand of switcher you have in there? Also what switcher would you recommend that will do the job under $3000? Anything that has more than 2 HD/SDI/SD Inputs will be fine for us. I was Wondering if i will pick the SE-1200MU 6 Input Switcher with RMC-260 Controller or The Black Magic atem Television... We are a Pioneering church here in the Middle east and we have a small budget for this. I've been looking for a Mid range budget type Switcher with a Hardware Control panel but it seems that they are way too expensive as of the moment. The only issue about the Black Magic is it is software based.. i mean even though it has 6 inputs i could just built a PC with 8 hdmi inputs and use wirecasts, that's a lot cheaper than buying that and buying a streaming hardware. The Atem 1/me is expensive, Basically what i prefer is a hardware based mixer rather than software based if we can, so that even it will be easier to teach people how to operate it rather than point out on a computer screen. Thanks, God Bless

I think it's a Ross Vision (if memory serves). The ATEM isn't really software. You control it with software (or you can get an expensive hardware box), but the switcher itself is hardware. It gets really hot, but does the job well.
@TheAwesomeGuy101
@TheAwesomeGuy101 7 лет назад
Yes I know the Atem is not a software based Switcher, what i'm saying is the broadcast panel for these ATEM are expensive though. That's why i reference the Wirecasts. But I found a cheap way to control the atem... it's via macro keys.. XKEYS.. just in case someone needs it. Anyways, Thank Paul. God Bless.

Where can i learn video switching
@PaulClifford
@PaulClifford 6 лет назад
Start by watching the best video you can...with the sound off. I want you to concentrate on the shots they take, how long they take them for, and what transitions they use. Next, practice. I've also got a video where I show you the multiview with me directing and you can listen to how I do it. If you don't have access to a switcher, OBS, which is free has a multiview so you could practice that way.

How do I get the Ross Vision into "Slot Machine" mode?

@StringerNews1

LOL, yes I found that one too not long after asking you. A while back I was looking for video clips to help me learn without the benefit of having time to practice at the actual switcher. That's where I came across references to the Slot Machine feature, but those videos wouldn't say how to access it. I'm going to be in for work early this weekend to try this one out myself!

Hey, I would like to ask how to connect video cameras far away (Hall [2/F] vs. Control room [3/F]) using HDMI? Is there a solution for this or just use a very long cable?
@PaulClifford
@PaulClifford 7 лет назад
Depends on the distance. If they're right above one another and the cable run is less than 33ft/10m, then an HDMI cable will work. I prefer SDI for longer runs. You convert to SDI run SDI over RD-6 Coax and then convert back. One of each of these should do the trick for you: amzn.to/2m09PyB amzn.to/2mdUcWj

Paul Alan Clifford Thx for replying and giving me suggestions. Unfortunately my control room isn't close to my cameras (4 in total). it's about 40m. What should I do?
@PaulClifford
@PaulClifford 7 лет назад
I'd do SDI.

What if the location is a football Playground? Control room is in the middle layer of the audience's seat. Extreme Long SDI cable?
