Knowing how to use the items in your personal survival kit is critical. In this video, we test our magnesium flint striker for the first time to build a fire and make some char cloth / charred natural material. Will the charred punk wood take a spark from a cheap magnesium flint stick? Watch this review to find out as we work on our survival skills!

Oh Dear! You've started down the slippery slope of Survival and Preparedness :) I've just watched your 'Building a DIY Survival Kit' video and it makes me So happy to see people starting out on this fascinating, exciting and challenging path. This video made me remember the joy I felt the first time I got a fire going without the use of matches or a lighter. Well Done! Keep watching Josh 'The Grey Bearded Green Beret' Enyart; he can teach you Everything you'll need to know - Good choice. You mentioned that it's a lot of work and takes a long time to shave off enough magnesium from the block, and it is. Personally, I don't use the magnesium block fire starters because the little ferro rod attached to it will wear out long before the magnesium. I use a ferro rod on it's own with flammable tinder such as Birch bark (the Essential tinder) or cotton balls and vaseline. However, I do occasioally use magnesium, but I bought a block/dowel of it and have scraped off a load and put it in a small plastic bottle or tub so that it's ready to use immediately when I need it. I can imagine your joy the first time you start a fire using the traditional Flint and Steel (just like the Vikings) using your charred cloth/punk wood 😀 Best wishes to you both.

Thanks for watching and for the comment! This certainly is a rabbit hole, isn't it? :) Now that our IFAK is complete (thanks in large part to watching Josh's videos), I feel like we're in pretty good shape in case we find ourselves in a survival situation. But of course, I want to get even more gear now, complete our home survival kit, and possibly attend a hands-on survival skills class. I agree about the little ferro rod attached to the magnesium stick. It just doesn't produce a hot enough spark to ignite other materials easily, with the exception of the charred punk wood. I even tried it with one of those little fire starting tabs, and that took a ridiculous amount of strikes to get a flame. I'm like you, I have a little pile of magnesium already prepped in case there's a next time. But with that said, an actual ferro rod is next on my list of things to get. Thanks again, and best wishes!

Just wait until you try some dryer lint or a cotton ball with some Vaseline as tinder.

I need to try that with the rod on the magnesium flint stick. I tested it with one of those fire starting tabs, and it took a LOT of strikes for it to finally catch flame. I think it's time to upgrade to a real ferro rod. Thanks for watching!
