*ENABLE INPUT FOR CONTROL MESSAGES* - remember to have this *checked* folks if you want to use knobs, sliders and buttons on your keyboard. I wasted too much time yesterday trying to figure out why my knobs weren't getting assigned when I moved them. Of course I should have just looked up a Kenny video and he explains it perfectly. Moral of the story, just look up a Kenny video.
I've got a Nektar LX25+ which fits nicely on my desk and is the greatest thing ever. Even though it has some additional software for Reaper (and other DAWs, but pah!) that allows it to function as a fulI Control Surface, it's still great to see someone explain the "MIDI learn" function for adjusting parameters from physical knobs etc on your MIDI device. This is obviously easy once you know how, and I do it all the time. But it took me a while to figure it out, so I'm sure your vid will be excellent for anyone wondering about this, or who simply didn't know you could do it. Endlessly helpful and simple to understand as ever -- thanks again for the great vid.
When you installed your LX25 did you use the drivers from Nektar? The ones I seem to have when downloaded say 'LX49' and I only get error messages that it can't be recognised by Reaper.
@@gamesdog9067 The downloaded file I have is called "Impact_GX-LX+_SE49_Reaper_Support_WIN_1.1.16.exe". I run this, run Reaper, and hey presto. Have you followed the instructions in the "Using Impact LX+ with Reaper" pdf that comes with it? Assuming that's "yes" please post more details about precisely what happens and I'll try to help you. But I must tell you it woks perfectly for me. Assume you're on WIndows 10 64 bit? You'll need to supply all the techie details, please, with precise error messages.
Why would a Reaper chad use anything else? Yes, any DAW can do what is shown here - add a MIDI device. The problems usually come after adding the device ;)
@@E_-_- You're not a "chad" for using reaper, lol. Do you have any idea how cringe that sounds? 😂 Reaper is super simple to use, it's a great DAW. You're not part of a higher tier of musician because you choose to use it. These days all available DAWs work great and you can swap between them and barely notice a difference if you have even a basic grasp of computer recording.
Great video. I'm brand new to this home recording stuff, and my Akai keyboard controller just got delivered. I had no idea what I was doing, but your video got me up and playing in minutes. I never would have figured this out on my own. Thanks!
MAAAAAAAAN I THANK GOD FOR YOU R VIDEOS BRO 🙏🏾 THEY ARE Thorough and get straight to the point unlike many others who beat around a bush, and uv saved me a TON of searching -Happily Subscribed and I will be telling my other musician/engineer buddies💪🏾
Thank you thank you thank you. So thorough! You helped me get my Digitakt connected and working - controlling VST delays right now with all 8 knobs simultaneously. Great!!!
Next do ReaLearn? What you showed here mirrored my first attempts at connecting an AKAI Mini to Reaper. (In fact, I learned something new here from your video!!!). But I found this approach disappointing and was ready to return the AKAI unit. Then I discovered ReaLearn. Now I use the AKAI Mini to start and stop the transport, control track volumes and effects, and so much more. Even perform live.
I recently picked up a used KK A49 and was really worried I wouldn't be able to get it to function properly. Very relieved to learn just how simple it actually is!
Thanks! It’s always good to go over this stuff. I use my old Casio FZ-1 to input midi. This video made me realize that I might be able to assign some of its currently unused sliders to control other functions in plugins, etc. 🎹
Thank you so much dude, I've just got my new PC and this video was really useful to configure my Launchkey 49. Still havo some doubts about how to use the other buttons on it, to record or play, or to change tracks.
This is a killer tutorial for us beginners, just switched from Garageband / FL studio and I'm loving Reaper so far! Got my Scarlett setup, working on Neural DSP plugins and MIDI stuff now. Is there a way to add more instruments to the list in Reaper or do they have to come from third parties (like Neural for example) ?
IMHO it in general it is not a good idea to recommend using the (non real time) "Reaper Control Path" to route Midi CCs from a keyboard to a plugin. (I.e. forcing a completely different signal path than the note events go). It is much more appropriate and logically straight forward to use the track's Midi path by [PARAM] -> ... > Midi Link (and friends) instead. (It's just a shame, that Reaper does not provide a "Learn" functionality for Track-Midi CCs and hence you need to manually choose the correct CC-Number that the keyboard (e,g, knob) sends. ) -Michael
Hey Kenny, I am having trouble mapping Reaper to Arturia DAW mode. Reaper keep displaying error message - the following MIDI inputs could not be openend: Keylab mkii 61. Can you please help, apparently, many reaper users faces the smae problem..
Hi Kenny, thanks for this video. I have a basic problem. I only have an older MIDI keyboard and an external sound module. I use a Roland UM-ONE interface to connect the keyboard to Reaper. I don't want to use the keyboard sounds but to use it only as a controller. When I connected the keyboard to the computer, Reaper recognised it but I don't know what connections to use so that I can record my parts on the keyboard but have Reaper playback my sounds of choice from the sound module. When I connect the sound module without the keyboard to the computer, Reaper doesn't recognise it. Do I need some extra hardware like a multiple MIDI splitter or something or is there a simpler solution? I would be most grateful for some advice either from your good self or any of your subscribers. Many thanks indeed.
Are you able to have an interface with studio speakers hooked up to it and also have the midi keyboard plugged into the computer via usb? What would you set your audio settings to in reaper to hear the sound through the studio speakers when playing the midi keyboard? Thanks
Hey buddy, I've been using a Yamaha PSR E373 synth to record in Reaper via an USB cable for about 2 years now - no issues whatsoever. I also use the same USB port in my laptop to record voice and guitar and I've kept on changing the input cables respectively countless of times - each time Reaper would automatically recognize the new input device and it would work great without me adjusting any setting. For some reason today Reaper stopped seeing my keyboard. It still works with the guitar and the microphone, but not with the Yamaha keyboard. Basically there is no sound input in Reaper from the keyboard anymore. Needless to say I've checked all settings, pulled the cables out, restarted everything. watched troubleshooting vids, checked the drivers - nothing worked. Any advise from the master please? :)
Nice I just started using Reaper yesterday and couldn't hear my Alesis through my interface even with a vst loaded on a track. My guitar works through it just fine though.
The problem might be the plug in. But midi learn isnt working. When i try to remap something it just doesnt work and then when i try to remap a second input it says that input is already mapped to the input i was trying to map the first time.
Ok but how do I connect a proper digital piano and use the sounds from the digital piano? I don't wanna use a plugin, I want the real sound of my Yamaha recorded
i got scarlet 2i2 gen3(no midi in out) and REAPER ful licence for recording ( guitars/vocal) but now i wanna buy midi ARTURIA MINILAB MKIII add Piano, drums VST. Will reaper recognize my midi controler?? Just wanna lay down some Piano VST Chords ,drums VST instruments all in Reaper ? thanks i learned a lot from this chanell about Reaper and recording.
I main logic. but I downloaded an VST that does not work with logic. it's the Vk 1 vikings synth. So I opened reaper and it works with reaper. So Reaper will grow on me now. I am so much more familiar with logic for vocals and mxing. but I may be spending more time with reaper for production instead of buying Ableton or FL studios.
This is such a great channel. thank you. I love learning Reaper, although I wish setting up midi was as easy as Apple makes it in Logic. I have a Nektar LX25 and despite folliowing their install instructions and this vid I'm still having issues (getting an error message of 'The following MIDI inputs could not be opened: Impact LX25+' It's pretty frustrating for your average home user not familiar with audio terminalogy.
Hi Kenny, thank you for this. I am really struggling to set the right amount of sensitivity to my midi cc(s). I use an Arturia Beatstep and in relative mode 1 it changes the values way to fast, while in relative 2 it is way too slow. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? thank you so much!
Hi Kenny, I want Reaper to control external midi devices, but my midi output devices aren't being recognised by Reaper (they don't show up at all in the midi output device list in preferences). They are recognised by other software just fine. Any ideas on how to fix this?
I got a Icon Qcon Pro midi controller station and did this but cause its not an instrument it didnt work. do you know how to connect a controller? thanks a lot
Hi, is it possible to configure Reaper in a way that a button on my midi keyboard (Komplete M32) will start recording? I've got a dedicated REC button (also STOP, PLAY, TEMPO) o my keyboard and I would like to control Reaper with it.
Thank you Kenny! But how the world do I get my Akai midimix to work too it’s fullest potential, let alone just get the lights working? I’m dead set on finding a way and any help or suggestions would be amazing. Thank you for all you do!
How can I setup Reaper when a new track is added input: MIDI defaults to "all MIDI inputs"? Each time I have to manually do this for every new track.. It's default in e.g. Cubase.
So I have a control surface called a sparrow that has 4 faders on it. I need to set it up so I can write cc11 expression. Do I set it up the same way with control messages
I'm using an Alesis nitro and my cymbal choke doesn't work. In cakewalk it's as easy as checking the key aftertouch box. Any ideas how to get aftertouch working?
I just bought Korg's nanocontroller2 for my Macintosh. But I can't use it. For the solution all videos give same Mackie kontrol klinke software but link is dead! I don't know is it usable for Mac either. I don't want to assign button for button script... I can't use it for even transport controls...
How would you use this to record CC changes for already recorded MIDI ? Say I laid down a MIDI track, then wanted to go back and modify CC 1, CC 11, and CC 19?
Hi sorry hope you can answer this question, my midi keyboard in Reaper plays both the drums and piano when I hit any key, I am using Arturia Analog V lab any help would be greatly appreciate it cheers. love your videos.
Hi reaper friends, I have the Problem, that there is a big latency between touching the midikeyboard and hearing the Sound through the Virtual Instrument or drum sequenzer .How can I reduce it in reaper. Thanks for your help !
Nice tutorial, I have set my midi keyboard and am able to play instruments but, there is slight latency. How can can I adjust thus so that sound plays instantly when playing my keyboard.
If it's Windows or Mac makes a difference. On Windows, it's tied (due to OS design constraints) to the audio buffer sample size. Reduce it and your latency decreases ("Options" --> "Preferences" --> "Audio/Device"; then change the "Block Size" to an amount with fewer samples (try 128)). You might have to put up with some audio clicks and pops though. It's all about compromise on Windows! There are some latency compensation timings you can use, too, but Reaper won't let you compensate bigger than the size of one audio buffer. This is a complex topic and I'd visit the Reaper forum for more.
Has anyone succeeded in using a smartphone as MIDI controller in Reaper ? My phone is connected to my computer (which has Reaper) in MIDI via a data USB cable. In Reaper even after "resetting all midi devices" i can't see my smartphone as midi device. Am i missing something ?
Thank you for your videos! Can i make you a question? I've configured my Midi controllers with your videos, but i would like to know if the following is possible: Im using an expression pedal to controll a wah vst and I would like to disable the vst when the Pos is 0 and turn it on when the Pos is 20 for example while also controlling the wah. I did it with the learn button on reaper but the vst also has its own bypass that gets enabled when i use "Learn" on reaper (Dont know how to explain it, just doesnt work like i would like), so what i would to know is, is there a way or a Rea plugin that can reads the expression pedal position so i can send (Lets say) CC32 On when the pedal is in a range between (for example) 0% to 20% and CC32 Off when then pedal is +20% while also sending the normal midi expression to the wah all the way? Thank you!!
Ihave a problem w reaper and my midi (nektar impact lx mini). When i go step by sstep throught this guide i always end up in a situation where reaper says "!!! N/A Enable+control" and i have no clue what to do about this cuz the keyboard refuses to work with me and this DAW. Works fine in some other DAWs. Anybody able to help me with this shit?
******** VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION:. Does Reaper have a way to Archive tracks?? NO, I don't want to freeze or mute the track. I want to be able to do what I can do in Cubase and CakeWalk. It seems it doesn't exist in Oh powerful Reaper or does it??
