I found a Nikon D100 listed for £34 on mpb.com and wondered how well it would behave in 2018, this is the result.
Footage shot on a Sony RX100M1 and Nikon P900.
Lenses used with the D100 were a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC and a Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD

I bought a D100 earlier this year and find it performs very well; quite adequate (and satisfying) for general use. Recommend it!

There's definitely something to be said for the ergonomics of SLR cameras.

I still love my D100. OK, it's a bit limited compared to the other Nikons I've owned and reviewed, but still going strong after nearly 20 years.

Cool - I recently got a grip for the camera - time for some vertical shots :D

@@MartyGreenwell At a punk gig, recently I forgot the vertical grip for my D800. As a consequence my elbow was sticking out. All was fine till a guy ran into my elbow with his throat! Grips are important!!!

I just got hold of one for fun off eBay for £35 as my old one, also eBay, bought in 2010 had grown fungus on the sensor which was etched in. These old girls are built like tanks and the new one looks like it had virtually no use at all. Unfortunately you cannot get shutter count on these early models. I stuck a fairly new 18-35mm and have had excellent results. The bracketing feature is still awesome and lightning fast compared to scrolling down menus. I use it on manual mostly with 0.7 stop bracketing and P/S NEF into B/W images. Can be quite stunning if the light is right.

I find quite a few of the earlier Nikons tend to need to dial in a bit of exposure comp - I think improvements in LightRoom have also helped keep these early models relevant when shooting raw. They're definitely still a capable camera, but the D200 can be had for not a lot more and that has many improvements.

You can get a D200 for not a lot more - I'd only pick the D100 up if you can get one dirt cheap like I did.

Thank you so much for this video! I received a Nikon N60 from a friend and I'm thinking about buying a cheap DSLR that I can use with the lenses that came along with it (to switch things up from film sometimes). I'm learning the art of photography, so I'm not looking to spend a fortune on equipment.
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 5 лет назад
Glad you found it useful, but I would see if you can get a D200 over a D100, it's not a huge price difference and you're more likely to find one that isn't falling to bits.

It seems a little bit like my d70. Six quality megapixels. I've got some large prints that you can't tell were shot at such a low resolution period in fact, I think it's perfect for most everyday shooters to get started on. They do spectacular macro, at least speaking for the d70. I'd love to play with a d100 but they're kind of hard to get right now.
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 3 года назад
The are quite similar cameras, the D70 came a little bit later as a mid-range as opposed to and more advananced DX00 series and then followed by the consumer D50 (which was my first DLSR).

Not sure what you meant about lenses and non ai lenses. I've used original nikon f film lenses in manual mode as well as m42 lenses in f mount adapter and soligor film lenses in a t4 - nikon f mount. You have to do some things manually but it is quite do able. I'm not as familiar with auto lenses so maybe i just misunderstood you. Thanks. Good video lots of good info to help people make a sound budget decision.
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 4 года назад
Thanks for you comment. Most F mount lenses will work in manual mode, but metering will not work with early F mount lenses, see Nikon's chart here for compatibility issues: www.nikonimgsupport.com/na/NSG_article?articleNo=000025349&configured=1&lang=en_SG - certain lenses can't be used at all. Adapting some other camera mounts is possible on the F mount, but the flange distance means many cannot, or if they are will have focusing issues at certain distances: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance

Is the pentaprism viewfinder really that better than a pentamirror? Am curious as I am practicing manual focus on my D70?
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 5 лет назад
The difference isn't massive on a D70 compared to D100 but pentaprisms tend to be a bit brighter as it's one piece of glass. Neither will really be any good for manual focus - that's where the film camera split prisms kick ass. You;ll still largely be relying on the green dot confirmation in the viewfinder. Look through the viewfinder of a D3 and you'll see a much bigger difference, but this is more to do with coverage and magnification.
@200447859
@200447859 5 лет назад
@@MartyGreenwell I do not have access to a D3 and cannot afford one definitely. I do rely on the green dot but I reckon the green dot might be telling me that there is something in focus on that focus point, which I use to tell me how is my exposure. I just thought that if one could manual focus by eye back in the film SLR days why not also in the digital age. Sometimes I think it might be my lens....just 2.8. If I compare it manual focusing with another camera, the d5000 with the kit f3.6 lens I tend to have more keepers when I manual focus on my d70 and Sigma 17-70 2.8D.
