This channel is about making the most of your photography kit, no matter how old or basic it is. I'll show you that it's possible to get nice photographs from cameras that have low mega pixel counts and are often a decade or more old (ancient in digital terms). What's more important is location and light - get that right and the rest will follow.
So join me whilst I look at Nikons, Canons, Sonys, Panasonics, Olympuses and more. But not Leica as that's well beyond my budget :D

I also eat a lot of chilli sauce and sometimes I video the experience. I write about it on Chilli Fiends - chilli video content has been moved to my other RU-vid Channel, Chilli Fiends: ru-vid.com/show-UCxak9HxaCXrDvnx4f0Xjugg
No. You can grab the manual from Canon's website still: www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer/products/cameras/powershot/s-series/powershot-s2-is.html?type=manuals
Well done video. I've been bemoaning the fact that phone cameras are so much more advanced than stand alone's due to computerization and things like pixel binning. Yes, I'm very much aware of pixel sizes. Been doing digital since about 1999. I've owned all of the DiMAGE series, D5, D7, A1, A2. Anyway, I was looking at fixed lens point and shoots and remembered my A2. Took it off the shelf and am starting to refamiliarize myself with it. (I bought a new Pentax DSLR in 2016 and stopped using it a year later, went back to film and the always handy and often amazing phone camera.) I found out that I had three whopping 4GB CF cards and a 2GB. Wow, we've come a long way. And the manual mostly refers to using 128MB memory card! On a suspicion, I check Amazon and sure enough, one can buy a CF/SD or Micro SD adapter for $15. The biggest downside, and not examined, is the video. The frame size is .8mp! Yes, POINT 8. Worthless for anything other than proving you really did bungee jump off of the bridge. I'd be glad to pay a few hundred dollars for a camera I can actually hold, and has actual knobs and dials that can do what a ho-hum tech phone camera can do. Pixel binning, auto HDR, at least 2K video, etc.
If you are making a video called "Nikon D700 vs Canon 5D" then I think that you should show a series of pictures, every one of them shot with both cameras. Maybe next time.
This was my first digital camera in 2000. Unfortunately I lost it around 2005 or 2006... I'm still sorry about it, even though it was a crappy camera. But I took a lot of memories with it. This one was definitely fun back in the day.
Bit of a long shot, but I recently picked up one of these on the cheap - I have little experience with cameras, does anyone know how I would get the photos onto my laptop now in the year 2023. Appreciate any help!
Easiest way is probably via a smart media card reader if you didn't get the USB cable with the camera (I've never seen a replacement in the wild). Something like this is what you're looking for: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172067173883
I'm still using mine in 2023. I bought it in 2010. CCD sensor cameras are all the rage now. I use it alongside my original Ricoh digital camera from 2005. It has 8.1 megapixels in it's CCD sensor.
I can buy one, that seems to be in very good condition for about 10 US dollars. Anyone that can tell me about its ability to take close ups of fx jewellery or insects? I make things and tie flies aso, and need something to take reasonable close ups with.
I did have a quick look as mine came with "box and accessories", but I can't find the box :/ - you'd probably struggle running the software on modern OS anyway - if I come across the box later on, I'll add it to the Internet Archive.
I bought one a few days ago for EUR 100, including two objectives, and it is in perfect condition. When I made the first pics, I noticed that it is very easy to handle, and the auto focus works really good. With the 50-200 objective, I got some really nice close-up shots of leaves and flowers, although I never used a DSLR before. This camera is a good choice if you do not need to print your pictures as large posters.
Same here. I still enjoy using the a2. A lot of people now are looking for that vintage retro look and this camera still performs with quite pleasing images. It's really all you need for documenting life even in 2023.
Yes, but are you using it? I have used mine for a year now, nearly shot 10000 pictures with it. ISO 50. It's almost like shooting film... Nice, little camera. In 2003 you could'nt use it, it drained the batterys so fast, but now the batterys are so much better...
@@janw.jensen2490 No, i stopped using it at around 2010. In 2007, my A1 suffered the "sensor rot" problem. After contacting Minolta, they offered me a free repair, even if the camera was out of warranty at this time. They changed the sensor and it worked again :).
@@janw.jensen2490 i just put it out the closet wall, charged the battery for a few minutes, and it turned on! Still has the 1GB CF card in from 2010, with photos of it xD. Took a few pictures, but battery went low. Nice to know that it still works, 20 years after i bought it :).
I have only one GE camera, a bridge camera and its only saving grace is as you said in your review is AA batteries and SD cards! The autofocus doesn't always work sometimes it hits focus with the green square the next time it wont focus and you get the red square.Happens at different zoom settings as well. All of this is in bright daylight on subjects with plenty of contrast. Not one I use now.
I'd pick the D810 over the D3X. I've not used the D3X or D810, but I do have a D3, D4, D800 and D850 (which is a stunning cam) and I'd definitely want the higher resolution and better ISO performance. If you really like the form factor of the D3X, you can always get the grip for the D810 which will extend battery life too.
I've taken mine out of mothballs recently I was my first DSLR camera and I totally disagree with you about it being 'Plasticy ' I've now coupled it with a 35mm f1.8 lens and hope to do a project with it I've moved on to more advanced cameras of course However it's in mint condition and I still have the kit 18-55 lens which didn't have VR and I won't sell it, I'd get f..... all price wise anyhow 📷👍 Ps: the best thing about it is, it doesn't do video, which we're all paying through the nose for, even though we as photographers do need on our cameras 😱
what type of SD card is meant for this model? I found my dads and it has no SD card and im confused as to which one I can use since I want to try the camera out, thank you!
S2 does not accept SDHC cards or SDXC so you may need to go used on eBay. 2GB is generally the maximum you're like to find that are the normal SD cards (there are some 4GB non-SDHC, but most will be).
It's likely to be a mechanical issue, dirt in the lens stopping it from extending - if it extends at all, then you can try "helping" the lens by gently pulling on it - it's probably a short-term fix tho, and given the value of these cams, probably not worth getting it repaired. Sorry I can't be of more help :)
@@MartyGreenwell i did literally everything i could watched about 1-2 hours of fixing vids and did everything right, i just went ahead & gave it away nothing helped
Hola una pregunta acabo de comprarme esta cámara pero el enfoque no sirve muy bien de lejos o de cerca es un problema interno y además la cámara si no usa flash se pone la imagen de colores
@@MartyGreenwell At a punk gig, recently I forgot the vertical grip for my D800. As a consequence my elbow was sticking out. All was fine till a guy ran into my elbow with his throat! Grips are important!!!
Thanks to overindulgent smartphone infants and idiot social media the resolution isn't even remotely an issue. Seriously the amount of unlevel vertical shots half of which are pinch zoomed that have become commonplace with the mindless morons of today photos are even worse than the early digital point and shoot days of 2003. People are too dumb and their gimmick devices and social media sites won't even let them view the full quality of the D2h.
Just found one for $5. Need to get a smaller SD card, you can shoot without it but not save. Photos are looking very good on the camera display, should be even better on a monitor.
I still have mine from 2004, everything on it still works 100% even the batteries still hold full charge, and the battery grip makes it feel so much better to hold. The cost back then was $2,000 in Australia.👍👍👍
Anybody? Is this camera and following items with it; Good enough to justify spending some money on for..... I have one of these I from somewhere years ago never been able to use it no cf-1 adapter came with it - i know they can be bought online is this good enough to do pix and especially video for bugs and critters for youtube? (any suggestions on settings?) for that purpose/close ups..? a look in the manual is daunting all the buttons and settings in the book also has a wide angle lens/ affix But I need a macro lens for insects right? -also came with 3 filters 1- uv filter 1 -marked FLD filter 1 -polarizer filter (but it has fungus like mushroom mycelium in between- the 2 glass discs will I ruin it if I soak in isopropyl?) is it worth/good enough to spend the $ on a macro lens-if there is one that fits and cf-1 adapter card? I'm on low income and -don't want to buy things to be able to use it if my 8mp iPhone 6 is can do just as good for video but its not steady-easy to get great vids thanks
Unless you really have an interest in vintage digital cameras, I wouldn't be buying something like this to do content creation on - I don't think you'd really gain anything from this over an iPhone 6 tbh, certainly not for video. If you can get accessories for cheap, then why not, but I wouldn't be spending a fortune, just use it as is and have some fun with the cam. Also, anything with fungus - get rid of it unless you can get shot of it completely, if you put this with other kit, eventually the spores from it will get into other stuff. IPA is unlikely to damage if it's all glass.
Hi! I just picked up one of these at an antique store and was wondering what your method was for moving photos from the camera to your computer? I don't have the original software disk (I do have the original usb cable, however) and I can't seem to find the software on canon's website. Any advice? Beautiful shots! Straight out of a painting.
You should just be able to plug it straight into a USB port and it'll pick it up as a removable drive. The easiest way (and it'll transfer quicker) is to put the SD card in an external card reader.
Just ordered one from a trusted eBay seller. Selling my Lumix FZ300 as the sensor is just not as captivating as the CCD. Something unique about the CCD images. Not the most detailed but vibes,,,,, it's about the vibes man.
Hope you have fun with it. The Olympus E-510/E-410 is worth seeking out for the CCD sensor too (the 5 has IBIS) - really should pull my finger out and get a vid done on that.
Not quite sure what you're asking - if you're asking about whether the Nikon D40X video quality is any good, well no it isn't, it doesn't have any. If you're talking about build quality, it's plastic, but durable but you wouldn't want to use it in bad weather. If you're talking about image quality, then it will depend on your use case and the price you pay for it - it's still a perfectly capable camera, but new cameras will have better DR and noise control - you'll just pay more for that.
Sony needs to bring back an updated version of the prosumer tilting body cameras, I started my digital photography journey with an dsc-f717, still have it, very versatile and fun to use…
