I have heard it pronounced that way occasionally, but I recently saw a phonetic pronunciation that confirmed the "k" sound. If it's Italian, the "ch" seems more likely? We need an Italian speaker to weigh in!

That data seems like it would only be useful over significant intervals of time, then.... no? So seasonal changes over the course of decades at least. Hrmm.
@marinabiologist Well, yes. I mean where we are taking the reading. Triangulating landmarks to get the same precision as in the past, that'd be all that's required. But, sure, GPS is more than adequate.
