Same goes for intel 6th gen 7th gen 8th gen and 9th gen all use same socket 1151 but they are not compatable with eachother 6th and 7th gen are compatable but if you use 7th or 8th gen cpu you need a new motherboard
A friend of mine chose a Xeon E1231v3 instead of an Core I7 4770K back in the Haswell days, its only difference was the lack of inegrated graphics so no loss there.
i7 3770k to a xeon e3 1290 v2 similar performance cause i couldnt overclock the i7 that much but it didnt matter cause the xeon has VT-d compatibility for virtual machines
Xeons are very underrated, especially second hand ones. They're super tough so they're safe bets for second hand and there are quite a lot available making it super cheap and easy to get. But if you don't know why you'd need one, probably means you don't need one

The dimms itself are broken or youve got bent CPU pins? Bent CPU pins can disable RAM slots due to not able to communicate with them. Check your board my man. (Except if they’re physically broken)
I'm amazed how the Intel Haswell xeons perform even to this day. My Xeon E3-1231v3 I've upgraded to since 4 years ago really improved on my now 7 year old gaming rig's performance on multi-treaded games.
@@christophert320 not recommend to do that now if you want to build a 5 years pc from now should pick a i3-12100f because the upgrade of architecture is a lot more better and the throttle of e3v2 is at about rtx2060 any above will have serious cpu trotle issue with e3v2

Not always. The E3 series are restricted to the same lane count as their consumer counterparts, but the E5 series (like the ones on socket LGA 2011) have more. Something like an E5-1660 v4 has 8 cores, 16 threads, extra cache, and gives performance similar to a low end last gen CPU in gaming, but with about 40 lanes of PCIe gen 3. Very handy for cheap server building. (I have two servers running Broadwell Xeons, very useful for starting your own homelab.)
My first foray into a gaming PC build was with a $24 Xeon X3440. If you don't give a damn about playing the latest games, an old Xeon paired with a GTX 10 series is a great start.

Someone selling a used Core i7 used is going to be able to get a lot more for it than someone selling the Xeon version of it. That's because far more potential buyers know about the Core versions but don't know anything about the Xeons. So that results in Xeons selling for less cost used.
You should talk about used workstation gpus. Depending on the architecture, It could easily compete with video encoding (streamline gpus) with an extremely low wattage.
I'm literally about to buy a rig thats got a w-2145 (8c16t) 3.7 ghz boosts to 4.5 ghz, 32 gb quad channel ram, 2 tb nvme and a 3080 for 700 bucks. It will destroy many newer gaming pc's.

Got an old Xeon workstation from 2011 for free that was used for CAD and I put a Gtx 1070 in it so now able to game at 1080p medium/high settings for $120.
the entire threadripper line has dogcrap single-core perrformance. Yes a really old xeon wouldn't do great against the best threadripper, but based on what the original comment said I assumed they meant two of around the same age@@lievenz7167
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995WX is worse performance than the Intel Xeon w9-3495X if that helps. They are both wildly powerful chips and u can find more info on comparison websites but xeon get a bad rep because they were used in low end hardware back in the day.
I have a Intel xeon e5-2687w v4 with a 6650 xt, 64gbs ddr4 ram, this is build plays all Aaa titles at 70 to 225fps and I stream and play games at the same time and this pc is a beast budget build but I had to do almost 3 months of research and testing to get it fine tuned, I hat to say this build turned into a 1800 dollar build
Intel Xeon do sometime shine as the most “cheapest” CPU in grey market. My CPU is E5-2650v2 which cost $10 and until now still works like a charm. Combining with ECC RAM which is also ironically also cheaper than Non-ECC RAM.
I have a Haswell-EP Xeon (E5-2650L v3 if memory serves), it idles at around 1W and at max load (12C/24T@2.1GHz) draws under 30W. Really not great in single thread loads but those aren't my use case anyway.
Some xeons that use standard consumer sockets are also only able to function with very specific chipsets. This doesn’t apply to all. LGA1155 Xeons are fully compatible with even low end consumer boards
Awhile back when core was still new, nobody really said much about the differences between the 2 lines and I think xeon had a higher processing speed and was more expensive so we built a PC with xeon lol. Idk what happened to it, haven't seen the person in forever.
Love my Xeon workstation but it is LOUD! Had to upgrade the cooler because 140w TDP needs alot of airflow. The L3 cache sucks, but its still got enough raw horsepower to run crowds on high In Cyberpunk.

ok, e5 1650v3/v4 for easier workloads and gaming, e5 2670/2690/2697 v3/v4 for much higher workloads and gaming. the e5 26xx processors can be used in a dual x99 setup, like the hp z620 if you wanna just go ahead and buy one of those, generally for a $200 price point for a dual cpu setup. you'll be looking for the lga2011-3 socket as the v4 chips will also fit that socket. that's pretty much it guys

back in the day it was way easier. i had a z77 (socket 1155) asrock board and a xeon e3 1230v2 as a cpu which was like i7 3770 equivalent at the time with about 100€ saved on the cpu side. just that you couldnt overclock it, otherwise it was a banger cpu and even ran very cool (maxed out in the mid to high 50°C on an 120mm tower cooler)
Found a xeon e3 1270 v2 for only 7 euros, its litteraly the same as i7 3770 just without igpu and higher clock speed by 0.10 ghz, so i use this for gaming and it hold up well
I have a xeon in my socket 1366 mobo, upgraded from 4-core i7 to a 6-core xeon. I7-950(45n) 4c/8t @3.06ghz, 3.33ghz turbo, to xeon x5680(32n) 6c/12t @3.33ghz, 3.6ghz turbo.
It’s not even socket based after haswell they’re also chipset based because intel would never make that mistake again. I learned this the hard way after trying to using a Skylake Xeon in z170 gaming board thinking oh they’d just work. Nope you need a server lineup chip set motherboard
Hmmm, I found some people using Xeon CPU for a PC. Xeon series by default it's CPU for server, workstation, even on mobile workstation (it was in the past 😅)
The reason most people dont use xeons is they usually have lower clock speeds. But some of the W series are monsters. I'm about to get a rig with the w-2145 thats 8c16t and runs base 3.7ghz and boosts to 4.5ghz. match that with 32 gb quad channel ram and a 3080 and it will run most anything at 4k 60+ fps. Usually though, xeons are in the low 2ghz and boost to high 2's ghz range, so they often dont make good gamers. But those with the higher clock speeds are monsters with the quad channel ram.
Even though 4th and 5th gen Xeon Scalable Workstation and Server CPU's share the same socket (LGA 4677) they are not compatible in each others motherboards. For example, the W series will only work in a W790 chipset motherboard and will not work in any motherboard with a server chipset. And if you really want a modern Xeon as your daily driver, I would recommend getting the W series. Preferably one of the X SKU's so that you can overclock it, since Intel was rather conservative with the clock speeds. You are also very unlikely to ever need any of the special accelerators inside the server oriented Xeons for your homelab.
My first computer I built had a Xeon e3 with an optiplex motherboard and then I plugged in a 750ti I bought at the local Best Buy for $100 at the time in 2012 I did not do my research at the ti and I had that little guy run everything until January of this year upgraded my entire rig piece by piece and got a 3050 still gamin at 1080p
I got an X99 Motherboard cpu combo from ali express for 50 bucks E5-2650 v4, paired it with a Xfx 5700 xt and 32 gb of ddr4 ram.. runnin at 2133mhz sadly.. but i'm from the 90's so all this is still fast compared to dial up.. I havent found a game I cant play at ulra presets.. 60+ fps built all in all $482
Using an 8 core 3.7GHz Xeon, released early 2012. Cost $10 and runs modern games no problem with an RTX 2070 and 128GB of decommissioned DDR3 server RAM ($0).

You can get some decent Xeon chip at low prices compared to their Core counterpart, I used a few workstations with Xeons in them, great budget gaming machines.
The thing about xeons is they are primarily workstation cpu's and they cost well over $1000 new usually. So new ones make utterly zero sense to make into gaming rigs.
Idk why lots of people hate on xeons cheap build, they offer good performance for low price. Sure you cant upgrade it, but if you want best performance for your low budjet this is by far the best option. Not everybody are capable of buying new and shiny stuff, if someone manages to build a fairly decent xeon gaming rig with low budjet, i can respect that.

A New zeon costs more than most people have to spend on their whole computer... The only way you're getting a zeon processor is if you get it second hand and you better be getting a motherboard with it...
Here in Brazil, like everyone likes to build a pc with Xeon, or at least I would like to since government rates are increasing, but that's beside the point, I know several people who have Xeon kits, for example a friend from school has a: X99 Zsus Motherboard Intel Xeon E5 2650 V3 16gb DDR4 (those generic green shit) RX 6600 and a Mancer Thunder 600w (the rest is basically shit from china or that already comes with the components). I mean, like, I don't think it's a bad build, I've played on this PC and it's great, but it's a risk, but I highly recommend a Xeon kit. You can get a kit Xeon X99 for like R$280, 300R$ (depends of how well you do your research) or 52$ ~ 60$, It all depends of the Xeon you are getting, the Motherboard and if it comes with ram sticks or not
Xeon E5 on LGA2011 motherboard or Xeon E3 on LGA1150 motherboard, those are the ultimate budget builds E5 Xeons perform better, around the level of an i7-4790K and Ryzen 5 3100 or higher but the 2011 mobos are a bit more expensive, while the 1150 E3 Xeons have a cheaper motherboard but their performance is a bit lower sitting between an i5-4960 and i7-4770
Xeon E3 v3 on LGA1150 are the same as 4th gen i7-4770, i7-4790 and perform the same. Xeon E5 and v2 on LGA2011 have higher core counts but are based on older Intel Core i 2nd and 3rd gen architecture. For example E5-1660 is an i7-3960X and E5-1660 v2 is equivalent to an i7-4960X. There is also the 8c/16t E5-1680 v2 which never got an i7 version. Xeon E5-26** are pretty much the same but have lower and higher core count versions and can be used in dual socket systems. Xeon E5 v3 and v4 on LGA2011-v3 are equivalent to CPUs like the i7-5960X and i7-6950X architecturally. If the core count and clock speed matches then they perform about the same.
