Using an AV Receiver to Power Your Cerwin Vega's

Saving Vega's

Most AV surround sound receivers are only rated for speakers with a nominal impedance of 6 ohms sometimes only 8 ohms. There are lots of CV speakers that have a nominal impedance of 4 ohms and by hooking them up to one of these receivers could result in amplifier failure. I run a couple tests on this receiver just to see how it reacts.

I have a set of MX250s I bought at the military PX in Korea in 1995. Around 2014 I refoamed the woofers, but they haven't really been used much in the last 15 years. This video has me looking at getting them running again on my older Denon AVR-S920W.

Yes, after such motivational videos, Harman repair services will not be left without work)) you should take into account what you used at low volume, but people don’t think with their heads. they’ll connect it to 2-3 Ohms and they’ll load up the power)) and then there will be sadness)))) and also the timbres there, the loudness in general will be a blast... after all, of all those who own the equipment, only a few percent understand how to use it, what influences what, the rest are just playing roulette...

Interesting. I have Xls 12's and I had them on a Denon X3700 H AVR. It ran them ok. But I could tell it was stressing the AVR . The XLS 12's are a 6 ohm load and the AVR was spec down to 4 ohms, but it was getting really hot and I could hear a lot of distortion especially at higher volumes. But the AVR has pre-outs so I got me a Crown XLi 1500. Made all the difference in the world. Anyways cool video!
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Год назад
That crown 1500 is probably the best dollar per watt amp you could get if you only need to run one set of speakers. Under-rated for its power output and should have lots of headroom for those 12s.

@@SavingVegas Yeah it is. Powers them with no problem what so ever. I have an entire 5 channel setup all XLS model speakers, the 12's, 6C center, a pair of 6S surrounds. I've got an older Yamaha RX-V793 AV receiver from the late 90s. It's 5.1, but no 5ch stereo mode. It is however 4ohm stable and can run A and B mains simultaneously. I have a set of VS-100s like these only woodgrain finish that I just refoamed hooked up to A, and a pair of L7's which are 8 ohm hooked up to B. Think I'd be safe running both simultaneously not using surround mode so no center or rears would be powered at the time?
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 2 месяца назад
The A & B channels are essentially only 2 channels, left & right. Running both A & B at the same time would be the same as hooking up 4 speakers on an amp with only one set of speaker outputs, one left and one right. The purpose of A & B outputs on an amp is to be able to switch between 2 different sets of speakers as need be. On the back of the receiver, it's probably written somewhere saying A or B minimum 4 ohms, A + B minimum 8 ohms.

@SavingVegas

I have since this video been able to take impedance measurements of these speakers. They are rated as having a 6 ohm nominal impedance but they actually measure closer to 4 ohms really, especially the VS-100.

I have an old pair of CV Hardrockers 212. The woofers were rotted and a tech replaced them with some 12 in. 4 ohm from Parts Express. My receivers all say no less than 8 ohm speakers. What can you recommend as a low cost amp or receiver to use with the 4 ohm speakers? I am not sure if the original woofers were 4 or ohm. Unable to find information on them. Thanks!

Unless you are using the D-9's for home theater I wouldn't use one to power the D-9's. I would find a good 2 channel power amp and pre amp. If you do want to use them for home theater I would find a AV receiver that has front channel pre outs so you could use an external power amp for the D-9's and control the power amp with the receiver. Not a lot of AV receivers like 4 ohm speakers like the D-9's are rated.

Hi sir! Do you think a pair of AT-12s from about 15 years ago will run well with 1979 Sansui G4500 (8ohms)? I've seen mixed specs saying the 12s are 6ohms and elsewhere at 4ohms. Any suggestions would be great!
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Год назад
I don't think that Sansui would have any issues running a set of AT-12s as long as that is the only set of speakers hooked up to it. Most of the 70's and 80's vintage amps will handle even a 4 ohm load with no issue. Wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on it and if you notice it creating excessive heat then dial it back.
@tkahres
@tkahres Год назад
@@SavingVegas thanks so much for the response! This is what I figured. It's very interesting how many conflicting sources state the At-12s at 4ohms, but I was able to find a advertisement spec sheet that puts the AT-15s at 6ohms. Why do you think this is the case? Are the ohms hard to determine for some reason? Also, I'm buying them second hand, and the original owner says their foam was replaced with prylopropelene rubber a few years back. Does that sound accurate/acceptable to you? (Super appreciation your way, sir! Excited for this journey!)
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Год назад
I have never used any kind of rubber surrounds on CV woofers before. The surround material and stiffness will affect the sound. I would recommend installing foam surrounds on them but it is up to you. Some people think it's better because they won't rot but they were designed to have foam.

@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 7 месяцев назад
I personally wouldn't bother trying to power them with an AV receiver. If your receiver has front channel pre outs I would use those with a good power amp. You can't bi amp AT 15s. Bi amping is when you use 2 different channels for one speaker, one channel for the tweeter and second channel for the woofer.

I am primarily a musicologist with an interest in acoustics covering many decades. In that long time I have worked with speakers galore including Cerwins (including the Stanton days) and was naturally attracted by the title. Sadly, all you show is how NOT to treat expensive and quite rare equipment for no particular reason except your own gratification. While HK tuner/amps of the type you show here were nothing special, many people who like music would be glad of such. I really do not understand the North American obsession with pseudo-"testing" such equipment often to destruction and perhaps someone will explain the syndrome to me.
