The PowerMac G5 was launched sometime around June of 2003, and at the time it was touted as being the fastest personal computer in the world. Personally, I think it's one of the coolest systems that Apple has ever released... and one of the worst computers you could buy as a retro computer enthusiast. So let's talk about it!
Let me know how I did on this video in the comments. Your feedback is greatly appreciated & it'll help me and my channel. Thanks for the support!

Never been into apples much, didn't know such units existed. Performs very underwhelming, at least looks great. Thanks for the video :)

I had the original 2.0 dual back in 2006.. then a 2.7 and recently I picked up a dual 2 3 'late 2005' with it's recovery disks too just for giggles. I bought it from a doctors office, and they had it sitting collecting dust. I was extremely shocked to find it still had it's 512 mb configuration, and a 160gb hd. I litterally destroyed that drive for my client per her request, and sat in awe as to how like new this one still looks. Not even a scratch. But, it's a little dusty so I am going to order me some fresh thermal paste and show my daughter how to totally refurbish a PM G5. Not a task for the light hearted for sure. But the rewards will pay in dividends. I stuck an extra 2gb in her and fired her up, restored Mac OS X tiger and with 2.5 gb of ram I must say as long as you keep your expectations in check Tiger is smooth. Of course I used a newer hybrid drive so having a huge cache probably helps things a little. I wouldn't go surfing the net or running anything modern, but if you use time period software such as iLife '06 this thing absolutely screams. But having the middle model of video, I wouldn't push the graphics too much, but again period appropriate games definitely works well. Many might start thinking what's the point if your not going to use it for anything modern? Well, I have way newer, higher spec computers for that. I mostly got it for nostalgia and to teach my daughter. I've already collected a MDD G4 that can still run Mac OS 9.22, but the G5 is a whole different animal.

I would recommend installing Ubuntu Linux for PowerPC. In 2005-2007 I ran Ubuntu on my 450Mhz G4 in order to get a more acceptable web experience. It seems the issues you had with your G5 are suspiciously similar to the Xbox 360 RROD. The reflowing and clamping down the chip to fix it, but who knows for how long that’ll work? It’s the computer equivalent of a car blowing the head gasket.

Thanks for watching! Funnily enough I literally just got the G5 out for pretty much the first time since making this video, surprisingly still got it to boot and played with it until it suddenly shut off without warning and now it won't boot LOL. I am definitely interested in experimenting with Linux on it if I can get it running again though. Since making this video I've also gotten plenty of Powerbooks to play around with as well so there's no huge rush for me, I might see how Ubuntu runs on a 1GHz TiBook. Maybe another video idea haha. I appreciate it!

If you mind me asking where did you get that silver touch-up paint? Just bought a new g5 myself which has seen better days lol
@LowestLogan
@LowestLogan 2 года назад
Hey man thanks for watching! Probably should have shown it in the video lol. The stuff I used is called Rub n' Buff Silver Leaf Wax Metallic Finish, I got mine from Amazon US www.amazon.com/dp/B013PYR4WO/ it's kind of a wax that goes on thicker than regular paint so you can rub it into the surface and it will hide some of the imperfections on the surface. Make sure you have some paper towels and gloves on hand because it can get really messy when you're working with it. Made a big difference in mine!

if you are going after power mac g5s . avoid agp versions and try to get pcie ddr2 ones . in linux you can run newer gpus ie 6770s or 5770s

Great video! Many people would like a G5 due to it being the last Power PC Mac and it's design language. Too bad it's a piece of crap lol
@LowestLogan
@LowestLogan 2 года назад
LOL Yep it really was a pretty amazing machine for its time. But even compared to the Mac mini that would come after it... it just wasn't a very fast computer ;) Thanks for watching!

I wouldn't call the G5 a POS, if anything the G5 and it's insane architecture might have been PowerPC's last breath, at least for Apple but it was by far Apple's most sophisticated, most bizarre computer ever. You got to think, this competed with the likes of a Pentium 4. If you compare a Pentium 4 to the G5, the G5 clocked at the same speed would wipe the floor with it. I believe it was just a little too sophisticated for the mainstream. It's true they're not speed demons today. Even with an ssd the G5 duals will crawl doing anything beyond simple surfing of the web. Partly because of hardware but also because of software support. There is none from Apple. Apple dropped these like a lead brick as quick as they could. The Mac Pro towers by the way used the same case but featured a way simpler and cool Core 2 duo architecture. The G5 ran very hot. Almost too hot and so owners who didn't take care of them very well quickly ran in to trouble. It didn't help they basically used IBM's server chip.

Could i put ATX motherboard in case of G5?
@LowestLogan
@LowestLogan 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! You can but it would require some modification to the case. I know there are some people that make adapters so you only have to do a minimal amount of cutting, but making the rear IO fit would definitely require some power tools to make it fit correctly. I think it's probably more trouble than its worth but that could still make a really fun project!

No, you can't ! Not without big big mods (with the help of loud surgery). Research for it on YT, there are a lot of interesting vids on how to change G5 into a PC.

U didn't give it a fair chance I'm using the dual core one from 2005 and iv got 8 gig of ram in it and it plays RU-vid fine put more ram it there give it a chance

Thanks for watching! I did my best but unfortunately mine only takes up to 4GB of DDR memory, an 8GB DDR2 model probably would have performed a bit better. In the end it's a PowerMac G5, I didn't expect a lot lol.
