Funny thing is depite being significantly better than consoles at games since the mid 90's Pc gaming never really took off till the 7th gen, by 2004 sure you had half life 2 doom3 and a few other but thats really all you had EVERYTHING was on console then for whatever reason in 2006 all of a sudden devs started making games on pc then using the dev kits to port them after the fact leading to a huge rise in games available on pc. I should note valve making steam a requirement for half life 2 and the very existence of steam in general absolutely helped spear head this movement. Now in the year of our lord 2024 people at large are finally starting to move over to gaming pc's realizing theyre a wiser investment over console ironically killing the pc market by driving up prices 100% which is infact not an exaggeration infact its an under exaggeration the number is closer to 129%

Early emulation fascinates me, considering how archaic hardware, software and the internet was in the mid 90s.

11:28: "You can play every single Nintendo game using just a Wii U and a Switch." Sorry, neither can play a SINGLE 3DS game. That's a pretty big library you just left out. And my PC can run 100% of all Nintendo games. Now THAT'S "really, really cool."
@Great-Documentaries
@Great-Documentaries 2 месяца назад
10:40: NO! The Wii U did NOT fail because of "poor marketing!" That is COMPLETE BS! They could have had the best marketing ever and it would not have sold even ONE more console! The Wii U was the console NO ONE asked for. It had this stupid tablet, which meant that the 60 million of us who bought Wii's for the motion controls were not interested at all, and it was vastly underpowered, only being about as powerful as a 2005 Xbox 360. And because of that, 3rd party devs couldn't easily bring the games they were making for the MUCH more powerful Xbox One and PS4 to the Wii U. THAT is why the Wii U failed. Literally no one but Nintendo fanboys wanted it. But fanboys being fanboys they want to make excuses for why it failed. Well, sorry. Wii know the truth.
@Great-Documentaries
@Great-Documentaries 2 месяца назад
10:15: Not one person on Earth spend the 6 long, dreadful years of the Wii U's life thinking it was an accessory to the Wii. If such a person had existed, they hardly were in the market for a console or they would have known what the Wii U was. Microsoft has named their consoles: Xbox, Xbox 360 (?), Xbox One (!??!!!?) and Xbox Series X/S (???). No MSFT fanboy has ever tried to claim they lost to Sony because of the confusing name. It's only the child-like Nintendo fanboys that try to use that as an excuse. Here's reality: Everyone knew what it was and STILL didn't want one because it had this useless tablet (that even Nintendo couldn't find a good use for) and it was previous-generation in terms of power vs the mighty PS4 and Xbox One. It's really and truly THAT simple.

6:30: "And now you have a regular Wii with an incredibly clean HDMI output." No you don't! LOL! I guess you don't know, so I'll inform you: *A Wii with OEM component video cables will ALWAYS and 100% of the time look BETTER than a vWii (Wii running on Wii U) with the Wii U's HDMI cable.* Google it or search here on RU-vid. It's true.
@Great-Documentaries

2:50: That is a VERY weak point to make as one can argue that Compaq and IBM kept making PCs with the same architecture from the early 1980s right up until the very end. So what? There was NOTHING wrong with that, and it is what makes PCs running Windows so compelling. My i7 Intel processor is just the latest x86 processor that can trace its routes back though the 8086 and even beyond. Your reaction seems to indicate that it was a mistake. It wasn't. And it made for 100% backwards compatibility, which MSFT and Sony did not have with their consoles largely because they kept changing architectures for no good reason. But sure, the Wii U was 7th Gen graphics in an 8th Gen world. That's because they refused to pay for better silicon from IBM and AMD, NOT because the latter didn't have it.

City trial online with multiple cities was a dream of mine since I first played the game as a kid. Definitely one of my favorite games, the checklist/goal structure is lovely. If Nintendo doesn’t make a new one we gotta just make an expansion mod, dolphin already has netplay and 4k graphics.

7:30 the Kirby 20th anniversary dream collection doesn't count. heck, that game proved that HAL Labs actually had HEART. the base Kirby's Return to Dreamland game itself was like 1.35GB (unless they're compressed?), however one mode in Dream Collection uses that game's engine for a mode, meaning the game is smaller than that. with Nintendo and Mario All-Stars; all of the game's content was squandered on a DVD-sized disc that's far larger than the SNES rom it contained (it didn't even have WORLD). for reference a single and dual-layered disc can hold at least 4.7GB or 8.54GB maximum respectively. Compare that to the Dream Collection where HAL placed more heart in that game's content, upto and including; localized events and dates near Kirby games' releases (in its timeline mode), a few episodes of the anime and even a video showing its orchestra. they also had no reason to go so hard on the VC games on there since the Wii covered all of them previously, but until the Gigaleak occured, was the only time that the Wii Gameboy Virtual Console emulator was actually utilized. (mostly for Dreamland 1 and 2). in a sense, HAL adding all that content made their collection make better use of that Disc's space. i also kind of wonder if the games' pricepoint just made it a no-brainer to buy, since it could be played on both Wii and Wii U systems. Nintendo pretty much dripfed VC games each generation, but then you have to consider how often does Kirby games get remade?

Switch modding does great and PS5 modding is starting to be a thing now. Honestly, considering how cheap Wii u are and the vwii mode, old Wii us a bit of a waste of time if you can get Wii u for more less the same price and it can all the same plus way lot more. There is just one thing that Wii can do and not a single other console can, it can output 240p RGB, any other console that you can run emulators on only supports 480i... Thanks to that you can play all the old roms on European CRT TVs in a great quality

4:25 "The rise of video game emulators brought a massive rise of video game piracy..." This is not quite true. Massive video game piracy existed long before emulation and even consoles, particularly in the PC space with the copying of floppy discs.

My first emulation experience was a ZX Spectrum emulator for DOS (I forgot it's name) that my friend ran on a 386 PC in 1993. I had an actual hardware ZX Spectrum back then and to me the whole idea of making something work from a completely different platform seemed like black magic. lol That same friend introduced me to NESticle and Genecyst several years later, when I already had a nice Pentium MMX 166 and again I was completely baffled by the possibilities and from then on I was actively using emulation to play games from other platforms. I remember I was one of the first to try the amazing first N64 emulator - UltraHLE, when most people didn't even believe that it was possible to emulate N64 and thought it was some sort of joke or a scam, I was already playing Mario64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time on it. Ah, good times. Of course ZSNES (or SNES9x sometimes, though it was a bit slower than ZSNES), Gens and ePSXe were my 3 favorite emulators in 2000's. I played through countless games on them.
@LowestLogan

I can only imagine what kind of mind-bending thing it must have been at that point in time haha. Impressive how far you could get with UltraHLE considering the PC hardware available. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

When UltraHLE launched I already owned a Doctor V64 for dumping N64 games and playing the resulting ROM files on original N64 hardware without the cartridge, but that was never the issue for people who didn’t. Think about it: most people playing VirtualGB, NESticle, Genecyst, MAME, SNES9x, etc typically didn’t dump their own games either. The issue for UltaHLE was that it required a 3Dfx Voodoo card. Even once Glide wrappers were a thing, most PCs didn’t have the required 3D accelerator… or had some crappy ATI Rage/Rage II or whatever that actually ran SLOWER with their special versions of Mechwarrior II or whatever and didn’t support OpenGL anyway (Direct3D Glide wrappers came later). Though I was able to play any N64 ROM flawlessly on the original hardware using my V64, I ran out and got a Diamond Monster Fusion z100 Voodoo Banshee card and upgraded to a Voodoo³ 3000 AGP immediately at-launch just so I could run UltraHLE. Of course, I also realized that my computer was now WAY more powerful than any game console on the market so I ended up becoming a huge PC gamer too. ;)
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 7 месяцев назад
OK, I realize now that what you meant was that people were now pirating a current-gen console and weren’t backing up their legally obtained games to emulate. Regarding commercial PlayStation emulation though, I’d argue Virtual Game Station was a bigger deal than Bleem!. It came from a company already experienced with commercially emulating Windows on a Mac or MacOS on a Windows machine… and they did everything right. Microsoft ended up buying Connectix for the whole VirtualPC thing.
@LowestLogan
@LowestLogan 6 месяцев назад
Doesn't matter when, there will always be a way to find that excuse to upgrade ;) Thanks for watching! Having the Doctor V64 must have felt like a really cool investment once you were able to emulate the games.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 месяцев назад
@@LowestLogan though UltraHLE was impressive and it was cool to play Mario 64 in high resolution, N64 emulators didn’t get good enough to truly be an alternative to original hardware for more than a few games until after the console was obsolete. You had to do all sorts of hacks… like you might play all the way through Ocarina of Time only to find the bridge to Ganon’s Tower never appears. Sure, you could hack your way in but you could hack your way to the end too so were you really playing that way? I used UltraHLE for stuff like boundary breaking to see inside the guard tower across the dam in Goldeneye (from a deleted mission where Bond would’ve used a boat). There was a hacked version for Adaptoid support (emulated game interface directly with original controller and real accessories) and some fixes that also let you move the camera with the keyboard number pad. That Adaptoid was also pretty cool. You could even backup Controller Paks or dump GB/C games using the Transfer Pak! The drivers just put a folder on your desktop and you could then drag and drop.

There were so many good titles not mentionned that I played when I was younger, here's the ones I remember enjoying: Star Fox Adventures, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Burnout, Freekstyle, Geist, Harry Potter 2, 3, 4 and 5, James Bond, Lord of the Ring, Mario Tennis, Soccer, Baseball, Party, Medal of Honor, Naruto, Pikmin, Prince of Persia, SoulCalibur 2, Tony Hawk Underground, Worms, X-Men, Chicken Little, Pac-Man World Rally, Crash Nitro Kart. There's probably more that I don't remember, but while I read the list of GC games ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GameCube_games ) I rediscover so many memories that I had forgotten and it made me realize that this was the console I played the most games and had the most fun on. This is the console that represents my childhood the most, alongside the handheld GBA. I still have my GameCube with the GBA port and the matching mini CD.
