My high school issued these to every student when I started freshman year. It was actually a fantastic daily use device and had incredibly good battery life. I would go 2-3 days without charging occasionally. It even had a better keyboard than my current 15” touchbar MacBook Pro. They were also incredibly durable and withstood heavy abuse. I’ve seen them bent, water damaged, shattered, and heavily dropped (like down flights of stairs) and continue to chug along. The only complaint I had was the absolutely terrible 1366x768 display which was disgusting even over half a decade ago.
@Ibrahim Anser Same man. Except that ours are made by Acer. We actually found a workaround so we could play Fortnite and Rocket League on them but the teachers put a stop to it real quick
We have one of these in our laptop fleet. Because it has 4GB of RAM, it's been moved into the "spare/backup" pile -- but it's been quite the lifesaver when we've had to send employees home to WFH if they popped a positive on their covid test.
@@lewiedewymountaindewy But then, saying that the Air in particular "has been quite the lifesaver", is a bit an overstatement. Could have been the Air or whatever spare one they were to pick.
Id die if my job sent me to work from home using a laptop with 4 Gb of ram, my current laptop has 32. Id rather buy them a new one with more ram if they don’t allow me to work using my own before using that lol xD.
I had a school-issued 11" MacBook Air many years back. They were fine, though the function keys were ridiculously small, and the screen was barely HD resolution. While most schools believe Chromebooks are the way to go because they're cheaper and more locked down, these machines are still good enough for most students, since they can do web browsing AND more, like editing video for class video projects for example.
@iumpeces Yeah... they wouldn't though as that would canabalize Macbook sales. I'm happy with Apple offering devices that are fully optimized for their use cases.
This little machine so reminds me of my own MacBook Air. I have the 2017 version of it, the last with the thicc bezels and the glowing Apple logo. It's happily streaming music in my living room all day. Keeps cool, doesn't crash. I just love it. 💓
Hope this will help 1. Don't use @ 2. Don't say twitter 3. Don't use underscore 4. Don't make space for it 5. Just use - to indicate your twitter handle That's what I can get to get the comments to get through.
I still use my 2011 2GB Macbook Air 11inch now and again. I love its size and the keyboard is still one of the best - pretty tactile. Battery was one of the things I needed to change and bought mine for about $300 bucks about 6 years ago.
@@aaronjoosepsepp why not? to each their own. what if he wanted to save a lot of his hard earned money instead of wasting it every year buying the latest ones and joining the bandwagon. I wish I was that frugal!
@@meow2148 very true indeed. I myself own an early 2006 MacBook Pro that also has 2GB of RAM (like the OP) and runs Snow Leopard (and Tiger) fast. It does slow down when I open few tabs of FireFox legacy. Although I have triple booted it with Ubuntu MATE 18.04 32 bit (which I use on almost daily basis) on it to get the latest applications (like Zoom for online classes)
Currently using one of these as my M1 air decided it didn't want to have a working screen anymore. This thing is a beast, its crazy that with such little ram it's able to handle all the browser tabs, documents, desktops, and displays I throw at it. It's also slightly embarrassing how much better the keyboard is compared to the M1 air (which cost 10x as much : /)
Bro literally my MacBook Pro M1 did the same thing last week that’s why I’m watching this 😂 I’m not fucking spending 700 euro or so to change the screen 🤡
8 I used windows all my life. Finally got one of these the exact same model the exact same year. And it's absolutely cool how most of the shit that this little guy does even the newer high end macbooks can't even do
I've got a mid-2013 one of these with 8GB of RAM! They are suprisingly usable and with OpenCore Legacy Patcher, you are able to use modern versions of MacOS on it.
I had an 11 inch MacBook Air a few years ago and loved it.The keyboard was great to type on and it was so light and it was a joy to use overall. I’ve almost managed to replicate that experience with my iPad Air 4th gen and Magic Keyboard.

Great travel machine, upgradable SSD, I have found a working logic board for it and was able to swap it to 8GB / i7 SKU. If you don't mind the 720p display, it's a solid secondary laptop, with great battery life. Make sure you get the last one that came out (Early 2015)

I bought 3 MBA 11 2015 models. All had 8GB's of ram. I had bought a 4GB model but it wasn't really up for much. Just that little extra ram made all the difference. Plus the price. I paid from $85-$100 for each of them including shipping and tax. One needed a battery after a couple of months but they are so light! Better than working with my iPAd Air 5.
It is impressive how well the hardware for these holds up even today. Great job as always with the clean-up and testing. Your example is encouraging me to try changing the thermal paste in my old laptops (something not usually done at maintenance places here in Honduras, Central America).
I still have an Early 2014 model of one of these that I got a while back as my first ever Macbook. It still works well, and I did a surprising amount of stuff on it, despite the 4GB RAM and the 128GB harddrive. It needs a new battery, though, which isn't hard to do.
Great video, Nathan. Thanks for making this mate. I have been looking for an 8GB one of these on Gumtree for donkeys ages, but difficult to find. Would make an excellent writing machine to sit at Henley to work on while listening to the waves. Take care and thanks again for the excellent content. Steve.
I just came across your channel - good content. I own the last version of the 11" MBA, and still have 2 great use cases for it; 1) note taking during office meetings in conference rooms away from my office (my MBP is hooked up to a OWC dock, so not convenient to undock), and using OneNote for notes, and 2) when I used to travel to China for work pre-Covid, I used it as a "burner" laptop in the very likely event that spyware got dropped onto it.
I got one of these 11" MacBook Air back in 2020 for free. It has lots of problems that's why it was free but I managed to fix all the problems without buying a replacement except the keyboard. Nowadays, my mother uses it to watch Netflix.
Happy Thanksgiving! I love your videos and every one that comes out I watch. You have such a great personality and I love to see working devices being fixed by somebody with talent. You are the best, never ever stop doing what you love because you are truly talented. Have a great thanksgiving!
Just popped for a Macbook Air 11" i7 8gig with 256 drive ...gonna check the battery and replace if needed and upgrade to a terabyte. $343.24US and free delivery. And as a Mac user since the 80's, small is beautiful. I loved the Duo 210, 230 and the final amazing 2400C
I'm glad there are people like you who repair these aging machines whereas I feel most people would've just dumped them. Thanks Nathan, your content always leaves me coming back for more! ColioFrye
Ofc if u use it only as personal computer even windows xp laptop is still usable. Its different when u use it for ur work. No sane person want their workflow to bottled only because their laptop is slow af and not supported anymore 😂
@@thedeadlygames9716 No he's totally right, unless the laptop is filled with crapware. Also what laptop we talking about? A Core 2 Duo or Quad machine is going to be usable today still.
These really are neat little machines even to this day, using Ubuntu on the 4 gig models makes a huge difference in terms of speed and reliability, only downside is you can't use the camera without some annoying workarounds.Anyways, great video!
I bought one of these a couple years back. Mid 2013 11” with the core i7 and 8 gigs of RAM. When configured as such, it’s a very competent machine even to this day (at least in terms of the usual workload of a college student)
It is cool to know that you are giving a 'new life' to these machines! It shows how much technology we have wasted, but we can still use if we can give some new life with the help of TLC ;). Keep doing your best, man! 149Wel

This brings me back, in 2012 my highschool switched to these MacBook Airs. They were epic. We all installed Minecraft and had a local server in the school. I had my own world and would let people in and we built our own city it was fun as heck!!
Love your videos, especially that eucalyptus oil can. Been with you since 120k, i find that your videos are satisfying with the fixing, cleaning, and applying thermal paste. Keep up the good work! :) NgHTn7
It's so fun watching you take apart old laptops, I even learnt how to take apart my laptop and complete basic tasks like changing the RAM, thermal paste and all after watching your videos. So thank you very much! j0ker1357
would be great to have removable drives, but comes at the cost of speed. Getting the same or similar speed on a removable drive, would cost a lot more....
@@LW62_Gaming I hardly disagree. I understand soldering the RAM to get that much Bandwidth. The SSD doesn't really get a big difference. Even though I'm still interested in some sources.
It’s nice that these have upgradeable drives, but something I found the hard way on my 15 2015 MacBook Pro is that Apple will only update the efi if the device is using the drive it came with (not sure if it has to be the exact drive or just the correct model), so if you’re upgrading to a m.2, also keep the drive just in case for software updates down the line
I personally own a 2017 MacBook Air, which is the last version to sport this iconic MacBook Air aesthetics. This is like a little brother to that model, so cute! If only the RAM is removable...
My mother bought an 11 inch MacBook Air in 2011, I now have it and it still works, but of course it can't run the latest version of MacOS, I think the latest version it can run is High Sierra, which is what it's running now.
i used to use a 2009 macbook pro but then i started using a 2011 dell laptop as a hackintosh which isnt very good for logic it would be so cool to have one of those small macbooks
They gave me the macbook air 11 for work this year. Imo the resolution and screen size is waaaay to small for working. You cannot simply open 2 word documents with revisions that letters became pixel lines. My device has thunderbolt broken so no external monito, pain for my eyes :(. On the other side for the device being so old and small the performances are simply outstanding.
I own 2 Mac devices. A early 2009 21 inch iMac and a late 2011 MacBook Pro. I think getting this MacBook Air will be a nice upgrade. Even if it is a small screen it would still be perfect for my school.
aah yes would be very cool for mackbook. love your vids have been watching for a while. and can you maybe lengten your vids i like watching them so more of it would be nice :)
A friend of mine gave me one of these computer and I was able to fix it up after it had been run over by a car while in their backpack! Once you apply some new thermal paste these things really are troopers and you can even install macOS 12 on them now! I used mine for a few months while waiting for a newer laptop to ship and it was a great device for quick note taking during class and watching youtube in between.
My old 11' MacBook air died sadly and it was unrepairable because it was the motherboard , I don't have Twitter and sadly can't download it but I am sure in need of a new laptop 😅 Also my school doesn't give me a laptop and I go to a programming school smh.
