Could you maybe consider doing a more in-depth explanation of all this, such as what the keys are, what they do, and how they do what they do?

I've been poisoned by arch, i just like it so much. Debian is a great server OS tho, personally i would do a Ubuntu Server instance, but Debian would be more stable

I agree with you. Arch using very commanline.

I run a number of servers under Ubuntu, they have been VERY stable. Issues I have had with them were typically hardware failing, or in the case of some running under VMWare, network driver issues. I also run Ubuntu or Mint for my Desktop OS, so that I can test configurations locally, before pushing anything up to the production servers. I moved away from RedHat based servers a dozen years ago, and haven't looked back.

I also use Arch and I will never ever go thru the crap these people do to run an inferior OS.

@@joshfreeno5527 arch is so easy if you use an installer like manjaro or antergos. I personally use manjaro. It's so easy.

Love Debian for servers, and it can serve quite well for desktop and laptop uses as well, though there can be a fair bit of overhead tweaking it and getting it set up just right. I've also been using Manjaro for the past several months on laptops and like it quite a lot for its ease of set up, use, and capability.

Well ok. Don’t know wtf a GPG is, nor a “key ring.” Also, is what you are doing in this video specific to Debian? Chris, really wish you would give some background on these functions before you jump in on the mechanics. You did the same exact thing in your “Passthrough” video.
@ChrisTitusTech
@ChrisTitusTech 5 лет назад
Will do, this video is for any Debian-based distribution (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, KDE Neon, Elementary, etc.)
@javabeanz8549
@javabeanz8549 5 лет назад
GPG, is shorthand for GNU Privacy Guard. In this sense, it is used to "sign" packages to verify that they are authentic, and not tampered with. And a "key ring" is a collection of the public parts of the pairs of "signing keys." If Chris took the time to break down all of this, it would be hour long videos, and most people wouldn't bother watching the whole video. These short videos are enough to give people the confidence to follow instructions to get things working. Though I, like you, really want to know the "why" and what these commands and flags actually do, and that requires much more in depth discussions.
@JessicaFEREM

It's basically to prevent you from running tampered software or malware. It's basically the linux version of "trusted developers" (thats what I believe ms calls it)

Thank you very very much for putting together these videos. It's really made me feel confident in my desire to stick to vanilla Arch., Not Manjaro. Not Antergos. Arch. Why? Well, watch the rest of these videos are you'll see why, lol. Thanks for the quality content, Chris. Yes, it is true you can do anything in Linus in any distro, but holy hell what a pain in the ass just to say you you're a cool kid and use Debian! I kid, of course. You're a good kiddo, Chris. You're always Chris... I mean, good.

If you are on Ubuntu or another distribution based on it, you will be fine. That was just for vanilla Debian. I'll definitely do a PPA video in the future.

You always have the choice of administering your system the way God (root) meant you to. Which of course is to tell your users (you) no, which makes them (you) do things in their (your) home directories with upstream source code.

@1pcfred
@1pcfred 5 лет назад
@@premier69 well Linux is based on UNIX and over time UNIX grew to become at least a cult. So in any religion there's rules. Now in Linux acolytes are not given so much guidance but are rather encouraged to explore and learn for themselves. Ultimately there are tenants one should reach themselves though. One of which is thou shalt not mess with the base system. For you know not what you do. The interaction with package management and the base system is incredibly complicated. Keeping that all working is difficult at best. I have to admit I don't even try. I just try not to mess with it.

I hear you husan and that is a normal reaction. Most don't understand how hard it is to shift the mindset when we have been on Windows for a long time. Dual boot starting out until you get comfortable, then you can slowly shift to Linux. It took me about 2 months before I really went full time on Linux and now use it everywhere.

Chris great video again. This reminds me that I I need to clean my apt keys and repos I have kind of a bloated apt on my work laptop. I've been to lazy or busy to clean it out LOL . Ubuntu ppa reops do work in Debian, they just tend to bloat your system. There is only one Ubuntu ppa I would be tempted to run is the graphics driver repo, I know someone who does that and it works just fine, but that would be the exception and not the rule. I do agree most Ubuntu repos you want to stay away from in Vanilla Debian.

@@Zellonous if there was a distro I thought was better out there you'd better believe I'd be running it. And there's plenty of stuff I'm not thrilled about in Debian too. But it is still better than any of the alternatives I've tried. Which at this point is just about anything worth trying.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 5 лет назад
@@Zellonous the quality. Debian is fairly flawless. I've found little bugs in it but I've had to dig pretty deeply to find them. Then there's the depth of the repository. It has most everything I'd expect it to. Finally Debian made dpkg which is the most used package manager in Linux. But being the ones that made it no one does dpkg better than Debian does. Debian is one of the big 3. The big 3 are Slackware, Red Hat and Debian. The oldest surviving Linux distributions. Debian just has the pedigree. It aged the best out of the lot too.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 5 лет назад
@@Zellonous you're not alone there. I'm pretty sure more use deb packages than all other Linux packages combined. RPM is the Linux Standards Base default package manager but deb completely eclipses it in use. Basically Red Hat totally screwed Linux over in the name of the almighty buck. If they'd played their cards differently Linux would be far less fractured than it is today. You'd had to have been around when up2date went subscription to understand what was lost then. Red Hat could be bigger than Microsoft is today if they'd just been smart instead of greedy. We exist today in the rubble of what could have been.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 5 лет назад
@@Zellonous I think one of Linux's biggest problems is a lack of a central guiding authority. In a way it is good but in other ways it is not so good. It makes progress pretty slow if there's a half a dozen of every project going on at the same time. It's just not efficient. I've seen projects take a downturn due to no effective leadership plenty of times too. It is what it is I suppose. The kernel works because Linus himself heads it. Other projects lack that drive and focus.
