Using Arturia's KeyStep with VCV Rack

For a while now, I was looking for a relatively small midi keyboard, that will work well with VCV Rack, but also with other gear, and that will fit into my live setup I'm building. Little did I know that the KeyStep from Arturia is a very powerful tool to have, super intuitive, and very friendly in a live situation. Other than having all the "regular" features a midi keyboard has like velocity and aftertouch, it has also a cool arpeggiator with 8 play modes, and a very powerful sequencer that can interact with the user and evolve the sequence on the spot as the composition develops. It's also very easy to use within VCV Rack, and in this video I show how to sync the KeyStep with VCV Rack, how to use it as a "normal" midi keyboard, also polyphonically, and I demonstrate how the arpeggiator and sequencer are working, including Chord mode, which is very cool by itself.

One correction, the KeyStep has no polyphonic aftertouch, but the Core MIDI modules issue will be fixed in VCV Rack 1.0 :)

Omri Cohen did you say Rack 1.0 is expected in a month? I hadn’t seen that mentioned anywhere before.

Omri - wan't to write such comment earlier but anyway - just accidentally stumbled upon your channel and it's pure gold! For the short period of time i've learn a lot about modular approach in a most easy way before actually spending tons of money for real Euroracks w/out no expertise in it. Your videos are very accessible and not as difficult and boring phrases as other pretty much similar videos. Keep doing videos like this, have a good weekend and hello from Kyiv, Ukraine ;)

The Keystep 32 I just bought does indeed have polyphonic aftertouch. That's why I bought it. Fantastic purchase, too. : ) Just heard about your software from a Benn and Gear video. I'm intrigued.

Thanks for the lovely tutorials.😍😍😍 apparently the beatstep + vcv videos are from 3-4 years ago. I wonder VCV midi modules aren't stable yet for main clock even pro version of rack2 ? because i dont want to use one of my empty input on the soundcard for a clock. thanks in advance mate.

Hey, no worries :) The Midi modules got an update a while ago so now there's the Midi-CV module. It works more or less the same.

Hi Omri, thanks a lot for your fantatastic Videos. I learn so much from your posts. As an advanced beginner in modular synth, I always have a sense of accomplishment. One question, however: You are using the Midi-4 module here, but that no longer exists. Is there a replacement?

Hey, thanks so much! And yes, the Midi-4 got replaced by the Midi-CV module. You can choose how many notes of polyphony you want in the right click menu.

Cheers, Adam! Well, the one I'm using in this video is quite simple actually, it's the UR 242 from Steinberg. I already changed it to a Motu one, the UltraLite mk4, which has more than just 2 outputs so I can send a clock out of VCV also. Let me know what is your setup now and what are you planning or wanting to do and I will try to help you out.

ive been using my digitakt as a controller for vcvrack , would be a match made in heaven if the digitakt plugin worked nicely with the vst host (fingers crossed maybe soon)

Love these tutorials. I had a question, for the chord generator, your using the midi 4 output but with the new vcv 1.0 its missing. Ive heard that you can use the midi-CV controller and make it 4 channel polyphonic. But when I try to do that whenever I play a note the previous note cuts off. Im patched properly. I was wondering what im missing here? Do you patch the V/oct in squinky labs to the same v/oct on the midi cv? Do you do the ame with the Gate control to the ADSR's? If I have the midi-cv in monophonic and can play 4 notes, but then when I change one note and go to another the rest of the chord cuts off. Any tips?

Thanks! Well, you have to keep in mind that all of your modules in the chain should be polyphonic, otherwise, it will not work. If you want, you can send me an example patch so I can have a look at it.

Hi Omri! Again, thanks for your videos and your help. It's my first time using a midi controller... I have a keystep. I can't get the pich and mode wheels to work, even though I made the same connections on the vcv rack. Will I have to configure something in the midi control center? when I try to use it with the vcv open I get "Error: Failed to open the device. Please verify the device is not in use by ..."I would appreciate if you enlighten me!!!! Thanks!

Hi! Well, it's not possible to use a Midi controller in multiple software at once so you will have to deselect it in VCV in order to use it in the Midi control center. Hi, why 3 cables? You only need one for the clock sync. I'm not so sure it will work with the line in on your computer though, since the signal will go to your speakers\headphones, and you don't want that. Do you have any audio interface you can use?

Hey Omri, also following your channel for month - there is no vid without a-ha effect and it's never boring, but sometimes to much for me, I have to slow down and concentrate to only a few modules. :) Would really like to see you and your vids much longer time.. Today my Keystep arrived, your vid was the first I saw and it inspired me.. also thanks for that. It will be really nice if one answered me a question.. I'm using a Focusrite Saffire 24 Pro, and also want connect the sync out to the input of the interface, but do not know with 5V or 12V. I connected them both with 5V, but the signal isn't a square wave, looks like a mix from more than one wave, but I can use clocked in VCV Rack with it. Is there something I'm doing wrong for now or is the interface not capable.. or is 5V and working clocked all i want? :) Thanks all!

Hi! Thank you for the kind words :) About the KeyStep, I don't quite understand, is it working? Can you sync Clocked with it? Is the Focusrite interface DC coupled? If not, then there is a level of filtering and that's why the wave looks like it looks, but it's perfectly ok as long as it works. Cheers!

Yes, Clocked is synced, I connect them like you, the Rate-Knob on the Keystep is working and transport too.. and I like it :) But the scope output in VCV, like you do, looks far away from square wave, and I do not know it's a problem with the hardware/-combination or theres something to configure in the Arturia Control Center so it works best. About DC coupled or not, I can't say, sorry, but its a good point to check now, thanks. And there is nothing in the signal way I know filtered, using Linux and jackd, so the way is (most) clear.. But I think I let it work and have fun.. :) .. this time the sync out at the Arturia is the most interessting funktion here, because its so nice integrated in Clocked and helpfull, and the CV outputs will hopefully later going to hardware synth.. see you, Omri!

im trying to play vcv with my key step but I can't seem to find the midi-1 module, did they change the name of the module or something?

Yeah, the Midi-1 module was replaced with the Midi-CV module. It should work the same though.

Well, you can try the line in input but you'll have to make sure the signal will not go to your speakers/headphones. Have a look if you have some sort of app that can prevent this.

@@lazlybateman8819 Well, to use it you can use the USB, you will not lose any function. Just if you want to sync it so to send a clock signal, then you will need the Line Input probably.

you still need one if you want to accurately convert cv signals back and forth , either to or from real eurorrack hardware , but not for this kind of simple application
