While it is impossible for the rooster to lay an egg, it was put in the data set as a fact of this hypothetical situation. Since the question is based on "if this were to happen" as opposed to "if this is a thing that can happen," saying that the rooster can't lay an egg isn't solving the question.
While brain teasers can be a fun and engaging way to promote critical thinking, it's important to note that critical thinking is a broader skill that can be developed through various activities, including analyzing literature, engaging in debates, and solving real-world problems. Brain teasers can be a valuable component of a more comprehensive approach to building critical thinking skills.
I honestly thought to myself "a rooster can't lay an egg" then immediately disregarded that as a solution (which is a weakness I admit) but I did so because in my experience people are by and large aren't very well informed. Some people think that pineapples grow on trees, and I grew up somewhere (in the third world) where they thought that chickens could only lay eggs when a rooster was involved and there are so many more examples of this. Also if you are in a dark room with single match, a lamp, candle and stove you can't light the match because matches can't be lit without a striker strip - unless you have a very specific type of match. So the presenter is falling prey to the exact same issue he described.
I'm absolutely enthralled by this material. A book I engaged with on this subject matter profoundly changed my views. "Unlocking the Brain's Full Potential" by Alexander Sterling
Hey, he said he only have a match without saying a matches box (thing we used to rub the match to the match box). How can he light the match? Doesn't he need to turn on the stove first and get the fire for the stove to the match and pass it to the candle and oil lamp?
It's implied that you have some way to ignite the match, like a matchbox. But it's great that you considered the logic of the question and thought critically about possible alternatives. Nice job!
You saig "A Rooster lays an egg" I allowed that for the hypothetical, as that is what I thought the query wanted. I thought you were using poetic license to make your point about the egg.
Because schools don't teach critical thinking or how to be objective. Educated people are the dumbest I've ever been around because everything for them is multiple choice or textbook. Why do you think doctors/surgeons are dumb? They are the 3rd leading cause of death in the US because of malpractice. Why? They don't know how to think.
Highly. Critical thinking is appropriate to multiple situations. In particular to computing. Critical thinking within the provided examples expresses the notion of ABSTRACTION. This is the act of leaving out information that is not necessary to know, consider or factor into gaining a solution to a problem. :)
what I thought is that like you said, ASSUMING there's a gas tank, it could be lit. But we dont know that, so i crossed it out. Same for the oil lamp, we dont know if there's oil in it. But a candle naturally has wax around it, so it should definitely light up.
I found the questions kinda stupid and not really helping in improving critical thinking. There was a logical fallacy in the answer to the second question because the second brain teaser question, “Which do you light first?” implies which one of the things mentioned would you light first. The answer would be correct if the question were “What do you light first?”
I'm not so sure these are "brain teasers", they seem more like trick questions. These would actually discourage a kid from wanting to do more. A better scenario would be solving crimes.
What if I made a cartoon with a three ghosts flying around and ask, “how many ghosts do you see? If you answered 3 you’re wrong because ghosts don’t exist you idiot!” And animate the ghosts disappearing. This is clearly what you just did with the egg. My critical thinking skills are off the charts!
I’m still trying to figure out what the year has to do with God’s creation of male and female. Whatever we are born as at birth is what we will be until the day you die. 🤷🏽♀️😊✌🏾🙏🏾
