(👆 UPDATED VERSION of 'English Grammar for German Learners')
Demystify German by discovering the principles & patterns that underpin German grammar (including declension patterns!).
In this ‘German for beginners’ grammar lesson video, you’ll unlock the FINAL piece of grammar information you need to MASTER the German case system (and, by extension, the German language!).
There are only FOUR declension patterns ever used in German: the standard, default pattern and 3 ‘exception patterns’ that deviate from the norm.
Learn how to overlay the All-In-One Declensions Chart with one of these four patterns ^^ in order to know EXACTLY which declension (strong, weak, or none) you need to put on your determiner and/or adjective(s) for ANY gender noun [masculine, feminine, neuter, plural] and ANY case [nominative, accusative, dative, genitive]!
Declension patterns are based on 2 principles that are perfectly reflected in the standard, default pattern (#1):
A) There is a general preference for the STRONG declension over the weak.
B) Determiners & adjectives ‘don’t mix’, but take DIFFERENT declensions.
Each of the exception patterns breaks (or omits) one of these rules:
• pattern #2 utilizes the ‘no declension’ option first (vs. the strong)
• pattern #3 HAS no determiners (just adjectives)
• pattern #4 mixes determiners & adjectives (using the SAME declensions)
No other German course will teach you about declension patterns! If you try to learn German the conventional way, you will discover just how complicatedly it is usually presented.
But German grammar actually makes a lot of sense! And you as an adult are perfectly primed to analyze and grasp it, quickly and easily. With this FINAL tool of ‘declension patterns’, you will be truly learning German smarter, not harder.

I speak fluent German after living in Germany for three years - the first year was studying grammar 3 hours a day. Laura, you are AMAZING. I don't think there is a website or textbook that comes close to understanding and conveying German 1/2 as well as you do. I am starting to tutor in German, and kids today don't learn much English grammar which makes learning any language more challenging. This video is amazing.

this is incredibly helpful. I have a quite interesting situation in my life because I am Ukrainian and I live in Germany as a refugee right now. I’ve been learning German in school in my hometown for 10 years but my speaking level is not that good as I want it to be and I have a lot of problems with grammar. AND I was lazy and not interested in the language so I didn’t sacrifice my time to learn the cases. now this is a very big problem for me because these are 95% of the German language so I can’t normally communicate with people here since all I know is some vocabulary and basis. I was sure that cases are too hard for me to learn even though my mom tried to teach me this cuz she also can speak German, and I tried to learn this by myself like 353782 times, but every time I only had failures. but since I found you! wonderful Lady, I can understand this topic and all I have to do now is to learn that simple pattern. thank you a lot! honestly, you should receive a big amount of feedback because your content is the first German-teaching content that I found and this is the best of ALL:)

I like that she used the word 'deceptive' when talking about the declension tables. I found myself learning all these tables and feeling as if I got it, but I realized I had to keep shifting through these tables in my head, which is a very frustrating way to do this. This technique certainly works much better. I assume most people try to do a version of this intuitively, those who learn the language anyways...

I'm going to ramble for a bit but bare with me😂 I'm a teenager specifically 16 and I started learning german by myself around last year November, after bouncing from app to app I finally settled with Duolingo but after a while I started feeling like what I was doing was just a repetitive cycle and I wasn't really going anywhere I mean my vocabulary was steadily increasing yes but I didn't have the skill to use that vocabulary yet so I decided to go back to square one and try reading books in german because this was how I learned to read in English since I didn't really have anyone to sit down and teach me however I couldn't find any free books with the simplistic vocabulary I was looking for and I ended up squashing that plan. after a few more drifting I discovered language transfer and let me tell you discovering that made me so excited because it was like having my own personal teacher, that was and still is really important to me because I live in the Caribbean and the only languages taught in this region are english, french, dutch and Portuguese so this made me really happy to say the least but during one of the pre-recorded lessons there were sentences with "tut es dir lied" and "es tut mir lied" I knew that these 2 (mir and dir) both meant the same thing but I didn't know the "why" behind it so that's what lead me to realize that i needed to learn german grammar. after about 2 hours of sifting through videos on RU-vid i came across your channel and everything for me changed after that, the way how you made me realize that all those der,die,das,dem, noun endings and etc were not really random like I had been hearing for so long was absolutely awe inspiring to say the least, after that I completely immersed myself in your videos for a week. this was monday and at the time of writing this its now Thursday and I've learned so much already. now like I said I'm still a minor in my last year of highschool so I can't sign up for your course just yet but ill be attending in university January 2023 and when I do ill definitely be signing up for your course🙏🏿 I have to say tho you're a born teacher keep doing what you're doing because little by little your changing lives✊🏿. well that was alot💀😂 sorry for all the rambling.

Whem you look at the other tablett called "4-declentions patterns" there is an entry "ein-Word determiner". So most probably that means certain cases where the noun has no determiner. I think though, that this particular scenario dosn´t play any role in such standard sentences being used in this video.

Hey Sandra, Do you happen to remember which video you took notes on before? I would be curious to hear how Laura was explaining it there. Determiners in general will take the strong declension. Adjectives are the only words that would take the weak declension. It is possible for a determiner to take *no* declension, but never the weak one. I hope that helps!
@andreso832
@andreso832 2 года назад
Thank you Laura your videos are amazing!! Quick question: for the plurals when do you use declension pattern 1 vs. 4? I’m under the impression weak declensions aren’t used for the plural but I’ve seen them in duolingo
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 2 года назад
Hey Andres, It all depends on which determiner you're using. If you're using what I call a 'rule-breaker' determiner like manch, or wenig, you'd need to use declension pattern 4. :-)
@RandomTask

What is an optional adjective?
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 3 месяца назад
An optional adjective is an adjective that can be added to a sentence to provide more detail or description but is not necessary for the sentence to be grammatically correct. For example, in the sentence "Das ist ein Haus" (That is a house), adding the adjective "groß" (big) makes it "Das ist ein großes Haus" (That is a big house). Here, "großes" is an optional adjective. In German, adjectives are usually placed before the noun they describe and must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun. Here are a few more examples with optional adjectives: Die Frau (The woman) -> Die schöne Frau (The beautiful woman) Der Hund (The dog) -> Der kleine Hund (The small dog) Das Auto (The car) -> Das schnelle Auto (The fast car) Ein Mann (A man) -> Ein alter Mann (An old man) Eine Katze (A cat) -> Eine schwarze Katze (A black cat) In each case, the adjective (schöne, kleine, schnelle, alter, schwarze) is optional and adds more information about the noun. Hope this helps! - Nicole, GwL Team

I'm really confused as to why you're excluding the mixed declinations. Your system doesn't make sense to me 😕
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura Год назад
I'm sorry for the confusion! I do think there could be some terminology confusion here. My system does account for all the ways you could use declensions. The weak and strong declensions are static, but what can change depending on context is which declension pattern you are using. What might be called a mixed declension is where I discuss the declension pattern of 'no declension' on ein-word determiners. I do believe I've actually simplified the information. With my system you focus on the three slots where it is even possible to not use a declension (masc./nom., neut./nom., and neut./acc.) instead of focusing on a full table just for the words 'ein', 'mein', etc. With my system you just need three pieces of information. Is the noun masculine or neuter? Is the article an 'ein-word determiner'? And what case/slot is the noun in? I hope that makes some more sense of it for you?

Thank you so much for replying! I'm just in a muddle now as Duolingo is saying 'Mein letzter Hund war ein Pudel'. Where does that R come from if adjectives take the weak declension? @@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura Год назад
Sorry I'm just now seeing this response! It's because Hund is a masculine noun in the nominative case, working with an ein-word determiner. That forces the strong declension 'r' to move off the determiner and go to the adjective. I hope that helps some!

so i need to understand the meaning of the words other than the noun to determine the cases
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 7 месяцев назад
If you are creating your own sentences, you will already know the meaning of the words you are using. If you are trying to analyze a sentence you found in the wild, you can actually figure out which case is being used just by looking at the declensions on the words surrounding the nouns. Understanding the meaning behind every word is not necessary to determine the case. -- Nicole, GwL Team

Hi thank you so much, I have a question, what does the "no flag" symbol mean?
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 2 года назад
It means that you would use no declension on that word. You would just use the root word. :-)

@@GermanwithLaura I got confused because in the table, the symbol appears once in masculine nom and twice in neutral.
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 2 года назад
Sorry I'm just seeing this now. It is only shown in those three locations because those are the only possible options for using the root form without declensions. In every other case/slot you will be using declensions.

Was there a time limit on getting the pdf file? I cannot find any link to download it. I ended up typing it all (thank goodness I know how to do tables). I did register and listen to the free Foundations course, but only got lessons 1-5, which were very helpful but not the tables mentioned in this video. But a little disappointing.

The PDF is accessible through this article on my website: germanwithlaura.com/declension/ My 'Unlocking German Grammar' course is free and further sets the stage for learning grammar points such as how to manipulate declensions yourself: germanwithlaura.com/unlocking-german-grammar/ My paid course German Foundations walks you through the step-by-step process of learning how to work with declensions, and more! germanwithlaura.com/german-foundations/

Hello dear teacher, I’d really love to buy your book “German foundations “ that you put on sale on Blurb. Is there any other outlets on which I could buy it? Like amazon for example

How do you know which filler to use, e or a ? Ex: neuter accusative is das (filler A) but neuter dative is dem (filler E). So for different cases there are different fillers. Do you have a system for that ?
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 3 года назад
The filler is always 'e' for any determiner or adjective except with the determiners 'die' (fem. nom. & acc.; plur. nom. & acc.) and 'das' (neut., nom. & acc.).

Why did you use jene instead of das?

We have 'jen-' there because we are saying 'that' baby, rather than 'the' baby. :)

Great question! That does happen in some specific instances. You can read more about it in this grammar guide I wrote here: germanwithlaura.com/declension/ Scroll down to 'Special Situation #1: Declined Nouns'.

The title of the video is „declension patterns” and I really hoped to find out when to chose which. In the article it is not really clear to me. In 25 minutes very few words are spent on that and all I found out is that you are only using the first one. Can you please explain how to chose the right one? Thank you.
@GermanwithLaura

Sorry that my free guide on my website didn't further clarify declension patterns for you. I had to intentionally keep this video introductory (it's a big topic). I spell out all the details and walk students through examples in my paid course 'German Foundations'.
