Fun fact, chickens can totally fly. They aren't the best flyers, but then the best flyers cross oceans so that's not really a fair comparison... They can get up and down trees alright though.

In the States it's usually referred to as a vacuum, (generally without saying "cleaner,") but I've definitely heard people use the term "Hoover" particularly as a verb, i.e. "hoovering."

Hoover is indeed a brand, but it's also a generacised trademark, others include band aid and escalator.

More to the point he was making, hoover is only the preferred word in the UK. Other countries still call it a vacuum or vacuum cleaner. I was not previously aware of escalator being a genericised trademark, so that that's interesting.

In the US we just say "vacuum" instead of "vacuum cleaner" though the latter is the 'official' term you'll see at a store. The average person isn't often talking about spaces devoid of matter.
